  • In the 1950s 60s Taiwan, they were all caught up in the White Terror. Amidst the heavy-handed political persecution, they survived.
But the White Terror was more than sufferings and adversity, they said. It was also about the passion for the nation, the yearning for social justice, and the socialist ideals against any kind of oppressions among peoples.
This is their red, youthful days.
    Su, Shen-chu (1939-)
    was born in Taiwan Keelung.
Su Shen-chu entered the Keelung Junior High School in 1954. He obtained a telegraph operator license in October 1958, and worked as a telegraph operator on ships such as Nianfeng No.1 and Nianfeng No.2. In 1959, one day, when sailing on the sea in a dense mist, the ship entered mainland China's sea territory and was detected by its torpedo boat and detained in Fujian Pingtan(福建平潭) for more than 43 days. During detention, he found the situation and development of mainland China was very different from the negative propaganda promoted by the KMT regime.
Unexpectedly, after the ship left Fujian Pingtan and returned to Taiwan, he was immediately detained by the Taiwan Garrison Command, and sent to the Security Department for interrogation. He was sentenced to be reformed for 3 years for "attending forum and farewell party held by bandit, praising bandit's political system, and delivering ridiculous words that "we wish Taiwan can soon be liberated, and that we will be awaiting in Taiwan." He was imprisoned at the Tucheng(土城) Production and Education Laboratory.
In 1963, he was released, and served military service for another two years. A year later, in the wake of a growing demand for telegraph operator on ships, he was again taking the job after obtaining agreement from the Garrison Command. He then worked as a telegraph operator for 7-8 years. He married Ms. Yang Hsiu-hua(楊秀花) in 1968. In 1970, his first child was born.
In 1974, he changed his job and began to engage in fish wholesale trading in Keelung. In 1987, he joined the "Taiwan Area Political Victim Mutual Assistance Association(台灣地區政治受難人互助會)" when it had just founded. In 1999, he joined the Labor Party, and so far, he still actively attended activities held by the Taiwan Area Political Victim Mutual Assistance Association.
