In August 2000, the world was shocked by the tragic disaster that occurred on the Russian submarine Kursk. This submarine, equipped with nuclear weapons, experienced a violent explosion while conducting training exercises in the Barents Sea. This incident not only killed all 118 crew members but also raised big questions about the safety of nuclear submarines.
The conditions that led to the disaster began with routine combat training carried out by Kursk. While firing the torpedo, a failure occurred and released highly reactive hydrogen peroxide gas. This gas immediately ignited a large fire in the torpedo compartment. The ensuing explosion damaged the submarine's critical systems, including the torpedo fuel tanks and ultimately, the nuclear fuel tanks.
