Can A Monster Waves Flip A Cruise Ship? _@OCEANBRIGHTSIDE
@OCEANBRIGHTSIDE
Cruise ships have been hit by rogue waves in the past, but it is not a common event. Since official records of rogue waves began in 1995, seven cruise ships have hit rogue waves. All suffered damage, some reported injuries, and one passenger sadly died onboard the Viking Polaris in December 2022.
The most recent incident happened when Hurtigruten’s MS Maud was hit by a rogue wave in December 2023. She suffered damage and was temporarily without power, but she was towed to safety and nobody was seriously hurt.
Another of the recent incidents involving a cruise ship being hit by a rogue wave was the case of the Viking Polaris in December 2022. A US woman was killed, and four other guests were injured when a rogue wave struck the ship when it was sailing towards Ushuaia on an Antarctic cruise.
The 62-year-old passenger sadly died as a result of being hit by broken glass when the wave smashed a window in her cabin during the storm. The other injured passengers suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Three of the other instances of rogue waves also happened in the South Atlantic and also involved small cruise ships. Both the Caledonian Star and the MS Bremen were hit by rogue waves in 2001. These were huge waves, measuring almost 100 feet tall.
Both ships suffered smashed windows on the bridge, along with losses to power and navigation controls. Neither ship reported any serious injuries, though, with the crew of the Bremen able to restore engine power. The Caledonian Star did have to limp back to port for repairs. These were serious incidents and the ships were lucky to not suffer injuries.
The third South-Atlantic incident occurred in March 2007 when the MS Prisendam was hit by two 40-feet waves in a row. It happened near Cape Horn and resulted in around 40 injuries to passengers.
Of the larger cruise ships, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 was hit by a 90-foot tall rogue wave in 1995 caused by Hurricane Luis. She suffered minimal damage. There were a handful of injuries to those on board, but nothing believed to be too serious.
In another instance, NCL’s Norwegian Dawn was hit by three freak waves off the coast of Georgia in 2005, one of which was around 70 feet tall.
It reached the 10th deck of the ship, breaking two windows (caused by balcony railings breaking free) and flooding over 60 cabins, along with some public areas. There were a handful of injuries and the ship was able to sail to port without any further trouble for repairs to be made.

    -Back in 2005 when I flew 747-200's for Kalitta Air, we used to fly from Hong Kong to Khabarovsk, Russia, and then on to Anchorage. It was a long day, 10+ hours of flight time. We landed in Khabarovsk because our -200's could not go fully loaded from Hong Kong to Anchorage fully loaded, so Connie Kalitta went to Khabarovsk, about half way, and sat down with the airport people. Apparently he wound up playing poker with them and "lost" $100,000; Suddenly we had the right to land in Khabarovsk and get fuel at $0.60 per gallon.... Connie was many things but one thing he was NOT was a bad poker player. You do the math. Anyway, we flew in and out of there, and one thing I liked was that the Russian ATC controller would come up the stairs into the airplane and sit down with us on the upper deck and read us our clearance. He and me could work out all the problems right there and since we were right in front of him, we could hear him perfectly. His English was passable but he had a heavy accent, so having him there for the departure briefing was OUTSTANDING. Two things about this guy: 1. He was FAT. He had seen no shortage of food, like you see of people in North Korea. He huffed and puffed coming up the steps and then the ladder to the upper deck where he could sit down and give us our briefing. Connie always put WAY more food on the airplane than we needed, so we told him to take all the fruit platters with him. He told us his wife loved them. 2. I absolutely hate to say this, but this guy always smelled of vodka. I am convinced to this day that the man was not drunk, but it was obvious that he HAD had a drink within the past 8 hours. He had a paper with instructions written in English and he did not slur his words; The way me and my colleagues looked at it was that this was a cultural thing, and safety was increased by having him on board and briefing to us our departure. One other thing that I will say is that I was taught by my mother, a farm girl from Asheville, to be very clean. I take a shower after waking up, after working out, after working in the yard, and sometimes just before bed. This man probably had not bathed in days. That means he STUNK! I think this post illustrates who the Russian people are. We have THOUSANDS of them in Miami-Dade county, and they are great people who work their asses off and party harder. They really have a healthier attitude towards life than Americans have, with our emphasis on work life first.

    Clickbait title, The Kursk wasn't a nuclear disaster. What exploded was kerosene fuel in a dummy torpedo (with no warhead) that was meant to be launched at a Russian ship in a mock trial. This explosion caused all the other torpedos to explode in the torpedo launch room at the front. This caused the sub to sink and the reactors shut themselves down so there wasn't a nuclear disaster under the sea which would've been worse than Chernobyl in terms of clean-up given where the sub sank. Also probably don't use AI to make your thumbnails. It makes your videos look extremely lazy because you're affectively stealing other people's work to 'create' your own. It's not cool to steal, even when you think you're not stealing which you're probably thinking whilst reading this - you are. Using AI to create content is theft. No offence, just criticism. Maybe if you take it to heart, your videos will improve.

    The AUKUS submarine currently being designed by BAE will also be using the latest and greatest US/British submarine tech available and will be fitted with the same reactor that will go into the Virginia class replacement submarine the SSN(X) thus the newest of US reactors. In combination with American weapons systems they will be a worthy submarine to be operated by Great Britain and the Australian Navy. The AUKUS submarines will add to the current UK Astute class and the not to distant Australian purchased Virginia class nuclear submarines from the USA under the AUKUS agreement. This submarine will be up there as one of the worlds most deadly submarines.
