Planet Zoo - Giraffe House & Habitat Speed Build

  • I was inspired by Rotterdam's Blijdorp's giraffe house to build a similar habitat building in Planet Zoo - with some Arabic touches. The rest of the exhibit offers some viewing shelters and winding paths for guests, allowing them to get up close with the giraffes - who on the other hand have a spread out grassland to explore. Yes, I'm still on the separate habitat speed builds while I'm trying to find my footing in this game, but some bigger stuff is in the works! I'm afraid you'll have to be patient though with my speed of working on things :)

    i dont quite get why people are arguing about the ethics of zoo´s in a game like planet coaster while not giving a damn about GTA or just First person Shooter in general. It´s a game, it´s there to have fun, to do what you want to do. If you want to build the most animal friendly zoo ever go ahead, if you want to build a zoo that does not care about animals, do it.
    if you can go on a rampage in GTA why not build a zoo´s thats just a pure breeding station for money. for me that makes no difference at all because they are games, not real life. easy as that
    of course it´s good to spread awareness about the ethics in zoos, and zoos might not be the best for some animals but without zoos even more animals would have already died out.

      @@vicalonso6597 that thing called symbolic violence is a thesis by a french sociologist.
      i´m not quite convinved on whats in that thesis.
      The big thing is, most people are very much able to distinguish a game from reality, some people not as much and you will notice that quite fast.
      I´ve done lots of things in GTA, and other shooters, but i would never even touch a gun. if you can´t differentiate
      between game and reality you shouldn´t play them or see a doctor, or even both.

      GSonic imho, there is a huge different between doing unethical stuff in gta and doing them in planet zoo. The game design af gta is all about killing, stealing cars and going to strip clubs, you can’t really avoid it becausr it’s the dna of the game and it doesn’t give you much choice about that. In the other hand, Planet Zoo is all about simulation, the game doesn’t force you to do the unethical thing. You can totally enjoy the game and stay ethical which is almost impossible in gta.
      Not sure if i was clear enough ahah. I’m totally ok with people doing unethical things in PZ but don’t compare it to GTA, the idea is totally different

      I think people who are arguing about the ethics of this game are the same people who don't support zoos irl, they may see this as a promotion of something that is unethical in their opinion but allowed by the law in many countries. Killing people is against the law everywhere so I don't think your analogy really works here cause as you said many people can distinguish real life from a game and that's not a promotion of homicide, but irl zoos with horrible conditions in them are not against the law in many countries, literal animal prisons where they die faster cause of stress of being near humans, small habitats etc. That's just my guess and answer to your phrase "I don't quite get why people are arguing".

    • @DJGSonik
      @DJGSonik Před 4 lety

      @@vicalonso6597 i´m not saying it´s not real, i just don´t believe it quite in the form it is explained in his thesis. A well made game will immerse a player into that game, a well made game (let´s say a story intensive game) will even let you build up relationships with ingame characters, friendship, or sometimes even a kind of love, that will sometimes even reach into the real world. but in my opinion a person that is mentally healthy will always be able to detach themself from a game and with that be able to know that the behaviour in the game, for example GTA, is not the right thing to do.
      i would not go as far and say that you are a psychopath if you play like one in gta 5, or would want to torture people in reallife because you like to do it in Red Dead Redemption 2.
      however i would go as far and say some people need more overcoming being the bad guy in video games than other people

    I must confess I was worried when I saw the thumbnail - no baby giraffe face, no waterfall, no red arrows - that can't be a great video. But it turned out pretty decent in the end.
    Kidding, great build again and interesting take on the ethic side, which I agree with 100%. I learned so much about animals and zoos in general because of my research for playing the game the way I do and I think it's sorta wasted knowledge if I don't pass it on to other people who might enjoy it.

    I really like that you turned 45° the glass panels, allowing more ventilation in their shelter. 🙂 Most times I see people playing this game and they go waaaay over the top with vegetation or the artificial lakes and waterfalls just for the looks, without taking in consideration the animals needs. So I definitely like your ethics approach much more. Thank you!

    Those round horizontal timbers supporting that massive viewing platform inside the building ould never hold all that weight. Even less so considering many are attached to the glass wall supports. I understand that a certain suspension of disbelief is required in all video games, even builders such as this, but this really stood out to me. A few same-size round timbers positioned vertically would have been good enough to curb my disbelief, provided they were pinioned directly under the horizontal timbers. I also understand that the curvature of the platform lends some support to itself, but this effect still at least looks insufficient. Love your work, can't wait to see more zoo creations! :)

    • @Silvarret
      @Silvarret  Před 4 lety

      That's a really fair point, should've considered that and at least added some diagonal bracing. That said, I'm quite sure that this kind of structure would have steel beams in the middle of those logs anyway, using the logs only for decorative purposes! At least, that's quite common in theme parks. Then again, 'engineering' has always been my weak point honestly!

    Here is a little challenge that force me to rethink my zoo design:
    I try to create nice habitat that offer the possibility to breed animal for nature population. You ll see that lot’s of animal sont interact nicely when their own child grows to aldult. After a first arrival of child, I find unetical to breed same familly animal.
    The solution is to create much wider habitat but that are separated in three to four section using the invisible fence and cover is cleverly.
    What is interresting with it is that it combined a game objective for thé leaves money and an ethical and genetical obligation regarding to animal.
    For a touch of humor, giving the girafe à stylish arabic feeling fabergé egg is also a good start 😂👍 always a pleasure to see your creations 😊😊

    I like your approach to designing ethical habitats for the animals and how to play the game. While this game has encouraged me to research animals and habitats to see what is best for them, I may fall guilty of running unethical zoos.
    While the animals with the strongest of genetics get excellent treatment, I cram animals with poor genetics in tiny pens until the protesters arrive, then i release the tigers.

    I used thatch roofs for an indonesian theme. I don't encourage recreating it though. Indonesian architecture has roofs with inverted arches at their middle / highesst point, that straightens out to a flat beam at the lowest point. No dome trick for that, left and right can't even be mirrored, so the general shape of the roof already took me 3 hours to make and fine tune.

    Very awesome build! ... You might consider to hide the steam overlay while you record. In the steam settings, goto "in-game", then uncheck the box "enable the steam overlay while in-game". So no popup/messages wil appear! (ps you then also cannot make screenshots via steam, so that you know). Hope this helps.

    There's a book by the photographer Garry Winogrand titled "The Animals" that's defintely worth checking out. His photos explore human animal interactions within a zoo in 1969, which is extremely problematic at some times. Along the exploration of some more serious topics it also gives you a more nuanced look at the (questionable) interesting architectual choices made within the zoo at that time. It's worth checking out.

    It would be exciting to see sometime, if you have some cool ideas on how to start the zoo, with an entrance and such.

    Gorgeous once again. I love your style of playing this game the most. I definitely feel like the concern about whether or not the zoos in the game are ethical are a bit ridiculous. People do all kinds of horrendous things in video games. I've chased down villagers in Animal Crossing just to beat them over the head with a net, drowned sims in pools, enslaved an entire village in minecraft, organ harvested in rimworld, and nobody bats an eye. Instead of focusing on game zoos, maybe turn their attention to real life zoos and put pressure on them on whether or not they're ethical.

    2:19 What type of building do giraffes live in realistically in the natural world though? 🤔

    Awesome building, and if you want to turn off notification,...when you start a game press shift+tab I guess, you will get to steam window and then click on your friends list, next to your name there is arrow, click on it and switch to offline or invisible, this should help
