This was kind of a foreshadowing of Jeff Gordon's career (minus the violent Pepsi 400 accident and ineptitude of the 46 team). Coincidentally, all the cars used in the movie were provided by Hendrick Motorsports, Robert Duvall's character Harry Hogg is based off of Harry Hyde who was a crew chief for Hendrick, and Gordon is only 5'7." It's also worth noting that Quaid's character is based off of Rick Hendrick. Originally, Jeff's car number was going to be 46, but it was changed to 24, and he came from open wheel sprints hoping to race the Indy 500. Jeff's first season saw him DNF in 11 events and torn up sheet metal, but was in contention for wins. In 1994, where Cole turned his first lap was the same track Jeff won his first race: Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The move was based off Tim Richmond not Jeff Gordon. Tim died of aids in the 80s and had a short Nascar career is why not many people have heard of him
@@johnthompson4600 I know it was based off of Tim Richmond, but it also seemed to be a foreshadowing of Jeff Gordon at the same time. Both drivers drove for Hendrick, but none of them possessed the arrogance towards their teams. The ice cream bit came from one of Benny Parsons' crews literally doing that. Dr. Lewicki got her name based off of Alan Kulwicki, and Harry Hogg is based of Harry Hyde, Richmond's crew chief.
