The Oregon Standoff: A Community Divided

  • Members of an anti-government militia have occupied the headquarters of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in a remote region of eastern Oregon for over a week, protesting what they claim is an overreaching federal government. The occupation is being led by Ammon Bundy and his brother Ryan, two sons of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher best known for an armed standoff with the federal government in 2014 over a cattle grazing dispute.
    The protest was sparked by the re-sentencing of two Oregon ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven, to five years in a federal prison for deliberately starting fires on their property that spread to the bordering Malheur Wildlife Refuge.
    While the media has referred to the situation as an armed standoff, more specifically, the "Oregon Standoff," the federal authorities have kept their distance, and the local authorities, led by Harney County Sheriff David Ward, are also treading lightly.
    VICE News traveled to Harney County, Oregon to meet with militia leaders, attend town hall meetings, and speak with local ranchers whom the protesters claim to be representing.

      Steven Sweeden That case particular was egregious. It’s like they were making an example out of him as a message for anyone thinking about standing up against government tyranny. There were a lot of questionable situations in that whole debacle. Either way, his shooting was unjustified. Have you ever watched the video from inside his truck? Law enforcement was shooting into the truck, which had several passengers (including women); there was zero reason to do this, as this was after Finicum had been shot. No one had given the cops any inclination that they were aggressive, much less justified opening fire. This was indiscriminate fire; lucky no one was shot.
      The video of Finicum being shot was messed up too. I didn’t even know he had a handgun. It certainly wasn’t obvious that he was reaching for one. He had also been clear on his intentions earlier. He was actually on his way to a meeting with a nearby Sheriff who was sympathetic to his cause.

      You are using logic under the idea of the Fed 10 documents where the states controlled more power than that of the federal government, but that led to the fall of a lot of different currency’s and a large divide in the nation. If that document was still used into today’s world our continent would most likely look like the European continent. The constitution and dec of independence led to a larger federal government which led to the United States becoming actual formal country. If states had more power there would be now United States their would be several country’s contained inside of the North American continent and probably several other internal wars. These people are saying it’s nowhere written in the constitution that the federal government can own land or have institutions just like you are saying, but yet again that’s under your own interpretation. The U.S government uses things like the supremacy clause, necessary and proper clause, the 10th amendment, and the part of the constitution where it talks of federal “implied powers” (powers given but not specifically determined in the constitution) this has led to a strong nation today and continues to help millions upon millions of people to this day. I watch this video and see a news story with a bias point of view. It is news that is presented to the people like this that is shameful. You show 1 interview from a "rancher" that is against the occupation but show no "rancher" that is for the occupation. There needs to be a open un-bias approach to getting information out, honest information, and then let people make their decisions based on truth and openness. I honestly don't know if the stand off is right or wrong, but I do know that this news story is very sad, and did not do anything to truly educate people of the situation going on. Knowledge is the true power, so get out there and get it.

    I dont exactly agree with the method of action here although I feel like this report is a bit one sided. I find it hard to believe that there are no local residents that actually appreciate this occupation. I also have to wonder why the original catalyst for this occupation was never mentioned by anyone in the report:
    Two ranchers who lit fires to protect their own land, and property and in the process protected and raised the value of federal land were charged as arsonists under a terrorism law. They never put anyone in danger and despite having previously taken and served out a plea deal they have been arbitrarily ordered back to prison for a mandatory five year prison sentence( violating the double jeopardy clause of the fifth amendment)
    Did no one that you interviewed bring this up? or does Vice just not think this small detail is important. I was expecting a lot more from vice on this piece

Use of deadly force is NOT a blanket cover for shooting the shit outta anyone there. I find it EXTREMELY disconcerting that more and more frequently, police are okaying their officers spraying bullets all over, quelling what they feel is a threat. On one occasion, police shot the unarmed woman that called them...

    my understanding is that the bundy event came about because of BLMs malicious prosecution of ranchers that had a prescribed burning (conventional agricultural tool) get out of hand. The feds went after the ranchers with charges of arson which seem to be completely inappropriate.
    In the end, local juries sided with the bundy activists and did not convict anyone for the occupation (seems like a clear and powerful jury nullification). Too bad the original travesty of imprisoning the ranchers who made a mistake with the prescribed burning wasn't also corrected.

      +BlueonGoldZ Yeah right, white men never blew shit up or burned down towns, especially in the US...
      These men are threatening to shoot cops if the cops come out and do their duty. If you think that's okay, just repeat this harmless experiment: call the cops and tell them you will shoot them if they show up on your private property...

    • @BlueonGoldZ
      @BlueonGoldZ Před 8 lety

      JerehmiaBoaz Well aside from the Oklahoma City bombing, white folks don't typically do the blowing-up or burning of shit down in this country or most countries. As I said, there was Ferguson, Baltimore, L.A. riots (I was there), Watts Riots and others).
      The men were threatening to shoot ANYONE who came in their and fired at them. You literally see them talking peacefully with the cops right there. I could theoretically call the cops and tell them I would shoot them if they come on my property but 1.) they aren't going to do that because there is no need for them to come to my property and 2.) if they don't have a warrant then they are intruding on my property and are liable to be shot.

    • @JerehmiaBoaz
      @JerehmiaBoaz Před 8 lety +1

      +BlueonGoldZ Correct, but if the white folks do the blowing up and burning down, they set the whole world on fire. The men are occupying government property and are threatening to shoot anyone who uses violence against them. When you do a hostile occupation of others' property and refuse to leave it peacefully, eventually cops will come and use violence to get you to leave. They are threatening those cops who are bound by duty to remove them with force if necessary, and I think they don't fully realize just how close to death that brings them.
      If you threaten to shoot people/cops, the cops do have an urgent need to seek you out and ask you some questions. Because you threaten them, they won't take risks and shoot first and ask questions later... Just go ahead and try it out if you _really_ don't believe you'll get in a lot of trouble and you'll probably die if you do anything stupid.

    • @JerehmiaBoaz
      @JerehmiaBoaz Před 8 lety +1

They themselves realized this is terrorism plain and simple, so after the prisoners refused their help and got them an easy way out they quickly changed their tune and started making demands for billions of dollars worth of land.
      This might sound smarter to some but it's not, they're still making demands to the government under threat of violence and we all know government can't give in to such demands.
