    I love this vid so much ❤. The way your kids help and the cat jumping into the bath tub. Your daughter is so funny. Just wondering how often you change the water and do you collect into a water butt or it just comes directly off the roof into the bath. In which case what happens when theres not enough rain? How do you access the house to clean and collect eggs? Tx again for lovely vid 😊

    • @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
      @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse  Před rokem

      Thanks Clare, I appreciate your encouragement! so first let me say that we have a breed of duck that doesn't spend a lot of time in the water. I think it would be different if they were different ducks, so i don't change the water that often - usually when it becomes murky and they stop going in it. I realised AFTER we build it that the bath is shaded from the sun ( on the north side of the coop) so i do get algae building up faster than if it was south facing. The roof run off gives a good fill to the bath but it depends on how much rain we have, and because of the square footage it never fills the bath so i do use the hose too. Especially during summer. The duck house has a large door on the front that drops down for egg collection ( i thought that was in the video - maybe its in my other duck vid!!)

    I LOVE this idea! I’ve been keeping an old tub thinking about using it for the garden but now i want to turn it into a duck area. How do you get your ducks to go in the coop at night?

    • @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
      @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse  Před rokem +2

      awww thanks ! Let me know how it works out... we raised our ducklings with young chickens initially so they sort of got coop trained that way however when we moved them to their own coop we kept them contained until they imprinted on the coop and then once they know its home they just go in at sundown. We also have an automatic coop door from run chicken that auto closes 20mins after sundown which has been a game changer

  • @shanisimpson2590

    How is the tub still working out? This is such a cool idea! My parents just redid their bathroom and have nothing to do with the old tub. I might have to snag it.

    • @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
      @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse  Před rokem +2

      Best thing i did for the ducks - they love it and i haven't had any issues with it, just make sure there is good space underneath to drain sludge... and mine is on a downsloap so all the water runs away ( rather than stands under the bath making the ground a mud pit !)

  • @GimmeADream
    @GimmeADream Před 2 lety +5

    You have been three months into the new duck building and I'm wondering how easy is it to clean out? Later on during the summer can you explain the pros and cons of the bathtub? I have been using baby pools and don't much like them but cleaning algae and muck out of a bathtub might be worse.

    • @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
      @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse  Před 2 lety +9

      Sorry i didn't see this comment ! Yes its super easy to clean, i just use a garden cane to bump the plug out and let the water drain while i'm weeding then i rinse any sludge out with the garden hose - it all drains downhill across the horse paddock... my only challenge is that with the pool being shaded the algae build up can be faster but then that is just about as fast as the ducks soil the water anyway ! There have been no other cons. Depending on what duck breed you have this might vary... our khaki campbells don't swim a lot anyway - they use it to splash and clean when its hot but they don't "sit" on the water, they rather be out on the garden hunting bugs

      Possibly goldfish for the algae build up and a strainer to prevent said fish from being dumped

      i just use a garden cane or stick to shift the plug and let the water drain out. Then i used the hose to swish any sludge out - it works great !

    There needs to be ventilation in the coop, otherwise there will be a buildup of ammonia and condensation from breathing.
