It’s so nice to finally hear a realistic video about “fluent in a year” I have been studying for multiple years and I am conversational but I wouldn’t consider myself fluent. I appreciate your realistic perspective. The fluent speaker in 6 month videos are annoying to me because for 99% of people it is a very unrealistic expectation
Yeah fluency is tough to describe, but nobody is doing it in 6 months even under the most loose definitions 😂 I almost never say I’m fluent, I just say “I speak Spanish” because it’s a fact and you can’t really argue against it. Thanks for watching and keep going! It’s a lifelong journey for sure

I have a similar background as you: some Spanish in high school that was mostly vocab & conjugating present tense verbs. Duolingo on & off (in spurts thinking I was getting somewhere because initially it feels good to be passing levels while recalling those old bits of Spanish from my past). Now, however, I'm gonna try taking it more seriously this time. I got that Madrigal book which is probably why your video got pushed to me in the algorithm. I went through 20 of the 45 lessons this weekend alone & feel like I learned more important Spanish than i did in high school. Imo its not even the fact that a lot of words in Spanish are similar to English that is helpful but moreso that she starts teaching w/ the past and future tenses (not to mention due to our journeys we will already have an advantage on the present tense). So for a $10 prime day deal I imagine I'll finish the book this week & I think it was worth it. Ill have to add reading stories in Spanish, watching Spanish cartoons, & more listening immersion into the mix. I'm in a position to be able to devote 30-60 minutes daily to this so maybe this time i can get over the hump & make better strides this year

@@Kim.K.EdwardsIt’s opinion thing, and, ass they say, opinions are like buttholes. We all have one.
But some of us have experience-actual experience. The overwhelming majority of people you see opining on Duolingo have very little use of it under their belt. Probably less than halfway through the full course, and they’re out here acting like they know what they’re talking about.
As for me, I’m about 85% through the full course, and can have full-length conversations in text, read books and articles and put the material down with a healthy understanding of what I just consumed without having to look up anything. That’s not to say I knew every word, I encounter words I don’t know often. But I know enough of the words around those words that I can contextually figure it out.
Duolingo’s greatest shortcoming (in my opinion) is listening skills and being able to speak out loud spontaneously. These are skills you will need to practice and develop in your own outside of Duolingo, but isn’t difficult to do. I use TikTok and CZcams to listen to native speakers to practice my listening, and fake conversations aloud with both imaginary people and with media-I will speak out loud to the radio, CZcams videos, TikTok, etc., to things they’re saying.
I’ve also joined groups on FB for Spanish speakers who are learning English, and it’s very easy to find people willing to chat back and forth with to practice their English and your Spanish-both texting and video/voice calls.
I also get 1-3 songs at a time, not a huge playlist, of English songs that have been translated and sang in Spanish and I will listen to them over and over and over and over, back to back. For example, on Sundays I am allowed to use earbuds and listen to music at work. That gives me a full 8 hours during the week-even though it’s all in one day, and I will play the same three songs over and over. I will listen to them once a day or so throughout the week, but this allows me to really get to know the songs, the words, and singing along with them gets me being able to say those words and phrases really well (and rapidly), which has proven to be an amazingly useful aid in my learning. I’ve found that phrases from these songs actually come in handy during conversations. I have many tiene pulled a whole line out of my head and just spit the whole thing out in a crisp, rapid chain of words that came from a song, and was applicable to the conversation. I essentially skipped over the hard part of learning subjunctive, because I accidentally picked it up in songs (and TikTok videos) without realizing I was learning what is a hard thing for so many others-and would have been for me, too, had I done it with my mind being distracted thinking I was learning some grammatical mechanic. I just had all these clips and lines in my head from songs, or watching the same TikTok video 400 times over a 3 week period until I could hear it and understand without having to think about it.

I liked this video, I can read at a fairly intermediate level but I have no speaking or listening skills so that’s what I’m trying to work on now, and these videos are great for motivation to keep me going.
Most important thing is to work on what you want to improve. Lots of people read a lot and think that’s all they need to speak and listen better, but those are separate skills. Listen to more speakers (podcasts, movies shows etc) and have more conversations and you’ll see your level increase for sure

Thank you for the video. You dropped a ton of gems. Your story is similar to mine. I took Spanish in Middle and High school but never was extremely conversational. Every now and then I've tried to re-learn as an adult but could never find the right process. Trying to learn through a rote method with just going through workbooks and DuoLingo ain't it. Your tips about interacting with Native speakers and reading children's books are great. How often did you meet with your teacher? Daily, Weekly, Monthly?
We were talking Skype 3-4 times a week during quarantine, but now it’s down to 2 times most weeks. We’re good friends now so it’s more straight up conversations about life than it is lessons, but it’s still very helpful.

Una vez se domine el sonido que forma una consonante con una vocal y al revés una vocal con una consonante pues ya se puede leer cualquier palabra y quedaría aprender lo que la palabra significa. Good video! My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Very good content. I'm also learning Spanish by just listening (comprehensive input) and over the last few months I´ve built some vocabulary/short sentences I can use but I´m stuck with conjugation. Thanks for watching. It was a mixture of both I would say. The present tense I learned in school but everything after that was on my own from input and practicing what i learned. It’s all the same pattern once you get it down

DUDE!!! You tickle the hell out of me. I could definitely learn from you. You're so damn real. You didn't tell me the first damn thing I didn't already know but I could not stop listening. I am a Polyglot. Spanish is a level 1 language so people who speak a level 5 language think learning Spanish is easy.....bs!!! right? It is so much harder to learn a lower-level language at times because we overthink it. Spanish has 7 damn tenses whereas English has three. Lower level languages use gender and conjugate which is trying to open a combination lock to which you don't know the damn combination.

You mentioned slang messing you up. Quick....my man...you have got to get Gritty Spanish if you don't already have it. I'm not a creator and I'm not an affiliate but it is cool. I'm sure you can Google it and find it. I have learned so much and I already could pass a 4-year level college examination and still learned REAL to life Spanish. People think that if you are white that people don't judge you...again..bs!!! I am just me and the last thing I need is people hating me because I'm speaking another tongue other than my mother's and thinking I think I'm better because I am speaking super proper then spitting in my damn food or some shit. I just love different cultures and want to be embraced as a peer and not presumed to think that I think I'm better and hated for something I never was or felt. Not saying I want to be fake, I'm saying the opposite. I want to be real. We do not speak English correctly but we all speak it wrong together. Excellent video. I learned a lot in one sitting by just taking a chapter of a challenging kids book (e.g. Chronicles of Narnia) and reading it with the audio book playing. It was kind of exhausting, but it noticed new words with every "lap" of the chapter and vocabulary was getting in without focusing on the vocabulary. It was weird, just my brain telling me "hey, this word means this" "wait really? (Checks dictionary) how the ... Cool)
Let me ask, though: how'd you work with Storytel. I had some trouble with it recently (even with VPN and phone in Spanish), so I just gave up and stuck with my library's audiobooks

How difficult would it be to speak to someone who uses “vos”, if you haven’t learned those conjugations?
I’ve been learning for about 7 months, and just began to speak about a month ago (4 convos total). I struggle with remembering things that I know, when in conversations, and putting sentences together. It can be frustrating because I like to talk, so I’ll have soooo much to say, but don’t know how to say most of it. 🤦🏽♀️😂
If you can quantify, about how long did it take you to get over that? And what was most effective in getting over that hump?
It’ll definitely be difficult at first because you say all 2nd person conjugations in the present differently. Dile and decile are pretty different in real time. I live in a city in Colombia now where vos is used often so I’m pretty accustomed to it. As far as forgetting everything you know that’s pretty normal actually because knowing something is different than actively recalling it. That’s why multiple choice is easier than fill in the blank. The only way your active recall will get better with things you know is to actively recall them 😂 gotta practice speaking as much as possible even if it’s with yourself. Hard to quantify it but the moment you commit to having frequent convos (multiple times per week) your progress will skyrocket

I wasn’t aware that some Latin American countries used “vos” until recently, so when I started my Spanish language journey I didn’t learn it. I think it would be too much for me to add it to my learning now, but I do plan on visiting a few places that use it. Guess I’ll worry about that when the time comes 😂.
I keep hearing that speaking more will help greatly. I told myself that I needed to do at least 3 classes (italki) per week, or 1 italki session, and 2 language exchange sessions.
It’s definitely time to increase my talking sessions.

Duo no es mal pero solo es un método, y si quieres aprender rapidamente, hay que usar más de una manera. Si solo usas un método, nunca aprenderías como quieres. Tienes la razón. La mayoría del tiempo que vas a usar tu conocimiento del español es cuándo hablas con personas en la vida real usando la voz. Estudiar y escribir es mejor cuándo empezas pero lo más que te mejoras, lo más que necesitas hablar. Eso es porque duolingo puede ser útil si no es el unico método que usas. Bueno para comenzar pero no para siempre.

Appreciate the video! I have a question- my family is from Haiti and i speak ok French with Horrible conjugations. Also, I've been around Spanish my entire life, so i can read/understand a lot of words, just can't form sentences or conjugate. I can only understand extremely slow Spanish. Just like you, i need context and hate formal lessons. How would you recommend me fully immersing myself to learn conversational Spanish? I'm in that weird space where i am looking for the best methods, instead of practicing. I think I'm looking for the easy way out since i have more than basics. Any assistance that can help someone in my situation?
Just do what’s at your level at the moment. Read basic books (out loud so you get used to saying the words) or watch basic tv with subtitles. Also trying to narrate what you’re doing or just did will help you realize what you can’t say. Just summarize whatever you do out loud in Spanish

@@quicktempa Thank you. I am an absolute beginner in Spanish, but I am almost bilingual in Italian/Hungarian. And I think, Spanish is a beautiful language, and much more useful than Italian.
So did you do the exercises in the Madrigal’s book? Or did you just read the book? How did you approach the aforementioned book?
I “did” them in my head but I didn’t actually write anything down. I read it all the way through and took concepts that I didn’t know and internalized them. So for instance at the time I might have known that words that end in ENT in English turn into ENTE in Spanish, but maybe I didn’t know CY turns into CIA. If I went back in time I would have started with that book though because it’s a lot of good info. Did I answer what you were looking for? If not let me know and I’ll give more info

@@ayushdas6523 maybe this will be my next video. In general, listening to more dialogue at a comfortable level will help because we mainly say the Same things all the time and you’ll get better at predicting what people are going to say

duolingo does the past tense.
Keep in mind the duo lingo of the present is not the duolingo of the past. I’m sure it has improved. At the time I tested out of the entire app with flying colors and I couldn’t even hold a convo in real life. It’s just not the same
How long were you studying on average per day? I'm on month 2 and i have about 100 pages of madrigal's left. I still can't understand much in vids or podcast. Children book's are also difficult to go through.
Really just depends on the day and at what point in my journey. Early I wasn’t doing more than 15-30 minutes because I just didn’t know enough it was more frustrating than exciting. After I could have conversations and fully understand podcasts and stuff I could talk and listen for 1 hour + without much effort so it was easier to “study” for longer
At the phase you’re at I would really recommend you get with a native on italki or find one in real life and spend your time there learning new stuff. If you’re not understanding what you’re hearing it’s wasting your time. If I listened to an hour lecture on rocket science in English I would get nothing out of it because it’s too high above my level

I'm pleased you learned to speaka da lingo in a year, and others who did so in six months, three months, or a week, and I know you post it to give people like me confidence that it can be done,but I have been doing it solo, can't afford the fees, and can manage a few simple sentences, so I reckon it's gonna take a decade or more before i can do it. 😂
Maybe, maybe not. Don’t limit yourself. You can still achieve a lot on your own with free resources. It’s all about knowing *how* to do it
Hello, you have such a good video. But if you would receive my critique, I would have loved to watch without the curse words. I know it seems like everyone curses, but not everyone. I don't, and hearing them really bothers me. And, because I don't know when they're coming, it's not like I can skip those parts.
It's your channel, your choice. But it does leave out some of is who would like to be a part of your audience and follow your Spanish journey.

I’ll keep it in mind, but I am who I am. I wasn’t raised the same as you and I’m sorry curse words bother you that much but, they mean absolutely nothing to me. I’m not calling anyone out of their names or disrespecting anyone they are random cuss words. It would have the same meaning if I said “dang” or “heck” even though those words aren’t considered cuss words. I also leave out people when I’m not my genuine self in my opinion. Lots of people like that Im genuine. But I will keep it in mind and I’ll try not to cuss when I do educational videos about Spanish.

1st thing st8. You didnt learn to be fluido in spanish in 1 year . Stop capping . You already condradict yourself saying You have Taken spanish in school and Duolingo over 10 years ago. So put your video title with an honest title that explains how i learned spanish over 10 years and how i could have done it a Lot faster . Nobody , got it ? @@seanslattery6366 Yeah the point of my story was that I couldn’t have any conversations with all my efforts on apps and school until I just started trying to speak. I just wanted people to know that no matter who you are you can reach a level where you Can speak somewhat effortlessly. I don’t care about classifying my level or using the word fluency, I just talk and post my full Spanish convos on here so people can see the mistakes I make and know that you can reach a solid level even while making mistakes.
