- Today we are taking our new Suffolk Punch Stallion, Baron, for his first drive to see how he will do! He was driven a few times by his previous owner, but this is Jim's first time driving him. Jim is beginning the training process he uses to train his draft horses to drive. We will see how Baron does!

Wonderful documentary. Great work Jason.
Barron knows he's loved . Can tell the way he looks at Brenda while she's brushing him . I can hear barn cat wanting attention also .
Ja 👍
Subtle but you can tell Jim’s favorite is Baron. He doesn’t touch the others with the tenderness that he touches Baron.
hello jim You may know that Pennsylvania German, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch (PD), is the primary language of most Amish and conservative Mennonite communities living in the United States today.
I am from Pennsylvania and you are right…we used to call it Pennsylvania Dutch when I was growing up.
I notice he's very alert and curiuous about EVERYTHING around him.
Thank you Jim and Brenda. Baron trusts you . His ears were forward and he kept his hoofs on the ground. I think training a little at a time is very wise.
I think the kitty wanted camera time. Baron is a handsome horse. He seemed very expressive. At the end, he sure loved his food.
Yes, Whitey always wants camera time or attention.
Nothing wrong with a quiet minute or two, just listening to the sounds of the stables. Loved the video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim I don't know why, but I've always loved to hear a horse eating, chewing, listening to the sound of their grazing, and love the sound of their hooves on pavement!!!! I just love horses, period!! One of my papaw's did logging with horses back in the early 1900s. I always loved listening to his stories about his horses hauling loads of wood. So watching you do logging helps me visualize what Papaw told me many years ago!!
He's not crazy about his bit..Baron is doing well, for a youngster. He's one beautiful colt.
Baron has so much power and speed. He will be great for pulling logs. That is one smart horse. Well done.
He did very well for a green broke horse.
Baron is a stallion? What a good job he did! He seems calm & knows what is expected of him.. He could've dragged you to ? but he didn't. That says alot about his temperament & how much he trusts you! Sweet boy.
Good boy Baron!
For Brenda’s Eyes Only…Please keep growing your beautiful silver hair out. You should see it under the lights of the barn and the sun outside…it literally glistens! You and Jim are a very blessed couple. 🌺
Excuse my mistakes, english is à second language. I think that you are horses whisper. You read béhavior of your horse. And you are calm and confident. I like so much your vidéo! And you know what, you are proud of your horses. You brush them and they have good lookin!
I believe with a well fitting harness and the time to learn what pleases you he will be outstanding! As others have said, your calm demeanor and patience are exactly what he needs.
The barn sounds are the best part of video. Horse chewing, harness being hung up, brushing and cat meowing. Love it. So relaxing and memory stimulating.
We are glad you enjoyed it!
I'm not an expert but been around horses many years, I can say he did a great job and looked like he trusts you and enjoyed the attention even he wanted to be with his buddies. 🐴
Baron doesn't seem to fear walking through water.
Good rainy day video for you and us,coastal North Carolina.
Baron did well.
Very well behaved. Baron is a nice horse.
So enthralling watching you learn Barons’ tendencies. And watching how he responds to you. I thought “how in the world will you control that much muscles and power if he decides to cut loose?” I miss my horses immensely. We moved recently and didn’t realize that the “ground” here is all sand. The place wasn’t kept up. No fences, no barn-not even a loading shed. I’m concerned of sand colic. My horses are not of the magnitude of your beautiful horses, but I love them nonetheless. They are getting old so I know I won’t be around them much longer. One is a cutting horse that I used to do Ranch Sorting with. 2 are Mustangs. And 1 is my daughters only paint mare.
My cutting horse pretty much accepts everything. Don’t know how I’ll be able to afford hay this year-but God willing I’ll find a way.
Thank you for this video-I enjoyed the quite brushing and munching. There’s just something about the outside of a contented horse the soothes the inside of a human.
God Bless
I’m just so impressed with Barons temperament! The stallions I’ve known have been really “studdy “ and not fun to be around… I still bear the scar of an unexpected bite on my right hand… I’m just in awe of him… you have been blessed with real horse sense! Love your videos… thank you♥️ I hope Lady is in foal!!! Don’t get to see any baby drafts often at all! It would be fun to watch it grow up!!!♥️☮️🕉🙋♀️
I’ve worked with yearling studs he is well mannered
Yes he is
It's as interesting to see the skill of the horseman as it is to see how the colt responds. I can see where a kid could get into trouble, where the experienced horseman relies on the experience gained through getting into trouble. I hope both kid and colt learn well. I enjoyed this video as always 💕🐎 It was relaxing to see and hear the munching and brushing of everyday life in the barn.
Yes, it would be pretty easy to get in trouble. Thanks for watching
He is looking even better since you first had him and he looks magnificent in harness!
Barren is very smart. he will learn quickly.
Love the sound of horses chewing the hay. It is amazing how a vegetarian can be so muscular.
That was outstanding. so beautiful
Thank you very much!
A+ for the first lesson , Baron. Good job , Jim and Brenda .
Barron is such a sweetheart. I love the color of his mane and tale. He's one gorgeous horse.
Another masterclass. I know its your every day work, but its unique and important in this day and age. I liked the end section of the video with the horses and Brenda brushing. The only thing we"re missing here on this side of the video is the smell of the horses.
It is peaceful and refreshing to be in the barn for chores. I do not need a lot of talk.
He's a Awesome horse
Good evening Jim and Brenda, you can see he it sometimes nervous but this is expected. But what l did notice Barron was listening to Jim and definitely found comfort in Jim's voice also when Brenda gently spoke to him he did quietly respond as well.So that was a great effort on all three of you,l feel very proud 👏 👏 l don't think it will take that long for him to settle and when he is aventually hitched up with another horse he will do well BUT its down to patients and of course Jim's reassuring voice.Like you say you don't really know his history. Please excuse my writing and spelling l am dyslexic and having a bit of a time of it this last tree days or so 😀 but lm sure you get what lm on about. All the very best Joyce 🌱🌱🌱💕
Hi Joyce, yes we are very pleased with his progress. Thanks for your comments, they were perfectly understandable!
I like how he's holding his head up high, he's a proud horse. 😉
Yes, we like how he holds his head too
Nice and steady wins the race Jim and brenda stay safe from Halifax England
Baron is one cool horse!
Bit too low and tongue over, he is VERY green. If tongue persists try a wide port. He went well. Looks great! Greetings from Australia.
Really interesting video. Jim, you continue to do a wonderful job of telling us what you are doing and trying to do.
Jim he did great.
Baron is a beautiful horse; Baron clearly understands your love of horses! 🙂
Beautiful horse.
A horse owner’s greatest praise for his new horse: “He’ll do in a pinch!” ; )
thats terrible lol !
Baron is a beautiful looking horse. He’s a stud in more ways than one.
I start mine with a rubber snaffle.
May the Lord bless you and your family
I have only scene Baron working in a teams logging and farming, so wa I surprise to see his 1st time out w you. He's got the most beautiful tail. 😂 I never knew you didn't have to cross ties.😅 glad to enjoy time in the barn. Hope you bend down, while filming, and give em a few pats. Plz.😢 I worked at farms w barn cats. I'm a cat whisper that's all. I love spend time in your barn.. Love how you manage their lives. You learned great ethics w your horses. God bless you all❤. Thanks for the added peaceful finish love you.❤
I think he done a fine job thanks for sharing have a good day
Thanks for watching
If I could make a suggestion
If you leave your lines out of your hame rings you can handle any explosions that come up with a one rein stop and Brenda does not have to lead and be in a bad spot
So nice to see how you finish working Baron to end on positive time. Very beautiful horse. Blessings!!!
I'm impressed! Not only a Stallion, but only 3 years old. A lot of horses can get a little fidgety when they're new to harness!. Of course he's a good kind of horse. I can see that in his head! But also, a good kind of horseman!!
I love how you work your horses Jim. You have a calm and confident demeanor with them. I also love how you feed your horses and keep their weight just right. Your feed is excellent quality and it shows. Brenda, you always take care of their coats so nicely!❤️
Thank you very much!
He did great. What a good boy.
That was very impressive! I've heard too many horror stories of dealing with new horses and stallions. Jim is good at this!
Baron did just fine for this early time in his training. He has a very nice step. It seems to me that that he glanced at Brenda with the camera at times and was a bit on the alert. Horses see the slightest changes in their environment and being very cautious by nature that affects their behavior. For example, when I plowed the other day my wife was picking peas in the nearby patch bending over the plants, on the next round she had sat down on a stool and the horses noticed that and started snorting as we approached.
Something about a Suffolk Punch I find so captivating. Being a rare breed in USA I'm excited to see your stud colt, Baron. Gorgeous!!
We were lucky enough to go the field day at Tillers International this spring, as they are headquarter not too far from here. I was thrilled to see their pair of Suffolks pulling a cultipacker. They were the first time I've seen them in real life; nearly all the Amish have Belgians, a few Percherons, with the stray Clyde once in a while. Fortunately, the fellow driving them had owned them for many years, and gifted them to Tillers Int'l. We had a lovely chat.
Interesting to me about your harness fit issues. He also said they have a head smaller than most heavy draft, yet the need the same size collar as a Belgian/Brabant. They look like body builders, to me.
Congratulations on you obtaining such a fine example of the breed (his full brother too!) He looks like he will WORK.
I enjoy watching you feed and grain the horses and Brenda brushing them, Baron looks so shiny and he seems happy.❤
Hi pretty lady. How are you doing today??
Looks like a lot more rain than you need. Here in southern Ontario we could use some. What an odd year. Barron seems to have a mind of his own!
Yes, the rain pattern in very strange this year!
I love Suffolk Punches and Jason Rutledge is a legend.
Nice job. Can really tell you love your horses. Thanks for sharing.....
hi jim and brenda . jim , great job with baron on the farm today.he responds good to you. brenda, I think you do a great job ,brushing the horses. hi to every one, to bad we never got to see trudy. god bless...jim, dartmouth, nova scotia ,canada.
Stay tuned for Friday's vid for a peek of Trudy! Thanks for watching!
Well I would say you did a very good job and I thought the house did pretty good for a little bit of experience the house and I don’t know if it makes much difference but if the harness fit better it might be might be better I don’t know I don’t know much about horses but anyway I’ll keep working
Baron did very well on his training good job Jim and baron
He done a great job. Exactly what most young horses do their first drive. Thanks for sharing .
This is fascinating from the behavior of the animals to the work they do to the leather and buckles for the harnesses. Thanks for showing such an old and honored process!
I was totally engrossed with this video! Your calm narration surely affected Baron. It was also great to see Baron move under control and imagine how really great he's going to be. Thanks, Jim.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes...
A lot of people really underestimate the power of a calm voice, which goes along with calm energy. I'm not as knowledgeable about horses as Jim is, though I do love them and have some riding experience. I have a working dog, and the general principles Jim talks about in this video are applicable to what I know and do. As someone who pays a lot of attention to voices since I can't see faces and body language, my observation is that most people are completely oblivious to how they use their voice. Just being around a bunch of animal people--dogs or horses--is enough to make my brain want to explode and the desire to stuff my ears with cotton balls is overwhelming.
A horse can't fully reach his fullest potential unless he's in the capable hands of a human who can get him there... hopefully a human who has calm energy and a calm voice (if they verbalize).
Looks great Jim, Brenda have a great day.
you too!
I thought he did a fine job being his first time all harnessed and walking around listening to Jim's commands. He's definitely a beautiful horse. It's going to be interesting watching you train him as I've never seen that done before.
Yes, we are pleased with his progress
All3 of your SP horses are beautiful. Baron did really well. I have a deep voice like yours Jim and find that animals respond so much better to the lower registers. Thanks for this amazing lesson.
Barron seems to be very head strong but willing to take commands. With work he will do fine. and a bridle that fits his mouh so hes not distracted. A beautiful horse !
Love how you guys work together. Your daughters are awesome. Would like to know more about Levi. Enjoyed those grandkids walking behind Jim and Isaac (?) fell down and hung on. The joy in your faces was awesome to see with your grandkids. God Bless you all.
I think he did ok. But I think he is what we call down here in tn green broke to work. But I am shore you guys can handle him. I think he will be as good as bill and lady. Once again thinks for sharing a great video.
Enjoy your videos and enjoy watching the horses work and be trained
This was so well done,. And very emotional,,,it's wonderful to see how good they learn...thank God you're gentle and kind...we were wondering if you could get a list of 10 words the Dutch use and write it as you hear it,,,and put your English words nx. To it...then as you're on training day both words for awhile...
We loved everything you did guys... excellent....
I love that you said that you learnt. So much from that lesson rather than the horse that is totally the right philosophy when working with animals.
Excellent video, Jim and Brenda. And Brenda, I love that you are letting your beautiful silver hair grow out. Speaking of looking good, Baron is such a handsome fellow!
He’s such a handsome horse 🐎
Fine job Baron fine job have a day love ❤ from TEXAS
Good Job! Baron is such a good horse!
Those suffix punch horses are great lil horses. Love them.
He could be a runner like bill.he sure is a good looking horse.reminds me a an incident I had with a Arab horse in a sulky and a snow plow at end of the driveway.great video!
Great video, thank you!
Baron is a beautiful horse, he did good job.
Got your hands full alright! He loves you n listens. He was trying and will get it! Brenda I know you have your hands full too camera and all! But if you grab the lead rope with your hand turned the other way you will have a better grip, if he pulls. ( Pinky to the outside)
Thank you Jim for this incredible video. Not only did we get to see you work with a younger horse but also one that you purchased and did not raise from a foal or colt!! You gave us so much information in this video and it was remarkable to watch this horse struggle at times and so I personally appreciate the honesty in this video but also the expertise of yourself as you patiently work with it!
It was a little scary for me when you were approaching the highway and a car was coming and you had signal for the horse to “WHOA” Secerdm
Oops! My phone fingers slept that’s the end of that last paragraph.!
It should’ve said “as you signaled
Choose a horse SEVERAL times to whoa …It made me nervous because I did not thank he was going to stop, but he Eventually listened to you & did so!!!!’
How long do you think it takes on an average to train the horse to be as good a team as Lady & Buck ??!!
Thats why you are a master at working with horses jim great video and baron is looking good it will take time but baron will get it
Whitey, the cat, demands attention. 🐱
Yes she does!
Another good job I’d say he did a pretty good job and you and the wife did a good job to I don’t know if his harness fit a little better that would make any difference but he seem to do pretty well and I will keep watching god bless
I would love to see Baron full grown. He's got alot of growing left to meet grown weight of 2000 lbs plus.
It seems that Baron is having some trouble steering to the left. This could be because he may have been driven alone in a team. And has probably always walked on the same side. Baron went one way because the other horse drove him there. He then had to pull the other one with him. And that can sometimes be a little more difficult. (Just an idea on my part).Other than that, he seems to be doing great. He's clearly already got something. My experience with horses is that it usually goes well the first time because then everything is still new. The second time you usually have to be extra careful.
Well done J & B ! Looks as though he will do great. Thank you for sharing.🐴
Looking forward to this seeing more training Jim
You have me wanting to look really hard for his breed because they are amazing breed's
Yes, they are very nice horses
Great, informative video! Enjoyed it very much!
The energy is not surprising. Punches love to work and pull
Fascinating stuff. I've been watching some of your older stuff. This content is just amazing
One of your best videos yet I love the end of just watching how you take care of your horses
He did very well. Great work. 👍
Well, done young baron for your trip round the farm yard.
Good work jim n Brenda.🇬🇧
I love how patient and gentle you both are with your horses
