  • Located 340 miles away from the Magic Kingdom sits a remote Disney hotel in the tourist town of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Built in 1996, for 24 years this hotel has flown under the radar for many Disney fans with most not even knowing that South Carolina has a Disney resort.

    Lie, Hilton head beaches are not clear they are the color of the sand greyish tan not like the beaches in Florida. Just saying, appreciate my hometown being one of America’s favorite island tho. For a while most people didn’t know what Hilton Head was.

      In the mid 70's most people hardly heard of Hilton Head Island. When I mentioned I lived on Hilton Head Island they thought it had something to do with Hilton Hotels. None of what you see today was there. Sometimes progress is beautiful!

    I've heard the resort lacks a restaurant because of an agreement with the city to ensure guests support the local eateries. These non-theme park resorts have proved to be a losing effort for Disney. A couple months ago Disney finally sold off the unused land they owned for Vero Beach's expansion. Aulani seemed to be the last straw for their efforts. They went all in and built the most incredible resort, I loved my trip this past summer, but it was a failure out the door. They struggled financially and a decade later they are still holding sales and offering incentives to try to sell the resort. Disney intended for several more resorts so you could have a variety of trips including a ski resort (based on Walt's original attempt) and a hotel in NYC. After Aulani opened though they were all canceled and all focus went to Disney World and Disneyland. The NYC hotel was actually built and looks identical to the original DVC concept art, just with a different sign on the top. Aulani has taken a lot of time, but is now starting to be what it was originally supposed to be out the gate, maybe that'll once again open the door for more resorts. I'm still waiting on my Disneyland Paris resort.

      I heard that Disney was, at one time, planning a kind of "waypoint" for travelers on the I95 corridor in my hometown Santee, SC but it never came to fruition

      @Brandis13 Před 4 lety +1

      Derek Picone I think one of the main reasons didn't get a DVC resort was that the owner, EuroDisney SCA was not fully owned by TWDC, now this has changed, so maybe there is still hope for that. But to be honest, I rather would continue to use my DVC points at the US resorts.

    "Washington, Maryland" hah, it's actually funny how I've never heard it called that before. We normally call it Washington D.C. (District of Columbia), and it's actually independent of the state of Maryland, even though it's on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. Fun fact: The city used to be 10x10 square miles, but they gave up the part on the Virginia side back to Virginia in 1847

    National Harbor, MD, USA is now home to a large Las Vegas style casino. I’m sure that Disney didn’t want to have a hotel that close to a casino,
    At one point, Disney had a travel company that put together bus tours. Washington, DC was a popular designation choice. A Disney character would meet you at select locations and your hotel. I sense Disney wanted more control over the hotel portion of their tour packages.

    I feel like with a good revamp of the resort, and a marketing push, Hilton Head could be as much of a must-go as Aulani is. Perhaps base the revamp on Gullah culture? A full restaurant is a must, but it should fund local eateries if the rumors are true.

    6:24 Actually the Disney resort was to be located just outside the city of Washington, DC (my hometown) in National Harbor, MD, which is considered a census-designated place (CDP). I go there a few times during the Christmas holiday season to see the ICE! attraction and Cirque Dreams show at the Gaylord National and the MGM Resorts.

(And same thing happens for any country, like what I know about the UK or Australia might surprise people, but I could also not know something that would surprise people from there).

    Tonight's drinking game is how many times Dominic begins a sentence with "Whilst." I counted seven, which was enough to finish my rum and coke. Thanks Dominic.
    Although I'm American and live precariously close to a Disney resort, I've always been amazed at how the Disney corporation completely snubs Australia, year after year. We fought together in a couple of wars, share pretty good economies and hobbies, I mean you'd think there would be more than enough reason to just build one already. Instead China gets TWO? ( Yes, I realize Hong Kong isn't China, proper. ) That whole "floating Disney park on a tanker" back during Eisner's era was the closest they ever got. What do we need, an online petition to get Disney to start doing feasibility studies?

    Hilton head resort was amazing. Its very secluded and the hotel faces the marsh. You get a great view from the rooms. Also its on an island off the island. So you're really isolated. Aulani is king of off property resorts but picking between Hilton head and vero beach is extremely tough. The thing with HHR compared to VBR is i feel they want you to experience the island and its offerings where VBR felt like they want you to stay on property. Love your videos and you're correct build more DVC off property. Grand canyon, Yosemite, Kenya, Munich, Fiji, ect ;)

    Disney Vacation Club resorts beyond the theme parks are very similar to the Wyndham's minus the characters. Home-like units are well appointed and in great locations across the USA, plus club membership is true ownership and not a lease like Disney.

    Resort is amazing BUT having to take a bus to the beach house is a negative and no restaurant is a huge let down. I would pick Vero beach over HHI for the fact I can walk to the beach and the food is better. Let's not get carried away though aulani is far and away the winner just the flight is harder to get to. We also found the characters to be lacking at both state side resorts and the pool for HHI is a tad small. The beach house pool is much bigger but you have to get up and leave the resort to go to it. If you just wanna jump in the pool for 15mins or even the ocean you have to travel. Again the resort is wonderful and I truly had a great time there just its a long drive for us in TX and wanting to relax at the resort and be in the bubble is not 100% . Just my 2 cents. Lol id still go back if I ever go that way again. Especially for the price

    I'm really surprised that more of these types of Disney Hotels haven't been constructed. To me it seems like a no-brainer for them to set up hotels everywhere. It's especially odd when you consider something like Adventures by Disney, which allows you to travel to cultural destinations rather than parks. Wouldn't it make more sense for the company to just operate a hotel that they could use during ABD trips that could even make more money on the side by being a DVC property? Well, for whatever reason they haven't done that, I'm sure it's valid, but for all the money-making schemes Disney has come up with over the years, this one seems like a really good low-risk-high-rewards one.
