My pro tip for fried chicken… drizzle honey over the chicken and then dip it in the Louisiana hot sauce. My favorite way of eating good fried chicken.

Texas in the house! I grew up on this stuff, so I gotta chime in.
First, you guys got all that southern comfort/soul food, and you didn't get nare bowl of collard greens or mustard greens? Oh my lawd!
FYI - Fried chicken batter is flour-based and fried catfish batter is cornmeal-based. Dunno if you can find it in your area, but next time you do catfish, if you can get it, try some jalapeno tartar sauce. Also, if you go back to this place in the future, order a bowl of pinto beans and crumble some cornbread into it.
And, for Amanda - Next time you need to tame the heat from spicy foods, go for some ice-cold milk or ice cream. Cold dairy products are best for slaying the spicy food dragon. Y'all really need to holoholo to Texas. I just know you'd enjoy sampling what we eat over here.

I’m a wing lover! We don’t have southern cuisine here in Australia 😫 at least where I am in Melbourne, I’m sure they are around though somewhere. Everything looks absolutely fabulous and comfort food for sure. Love the desserts, I believe when you eat out, you gotta have dessert.

American farm raised catfish is amazing breaded with tartar sauce. Being from Hawaii we never had really good catfish until we went to a Southern restaurant in CA. Fell in love immediately.

Love soul food, especially southern fried chicken, smothered pork chops, and fried catfish! Never realized there was a soul food joint in Honolulu! The pork chop looked especially delicious! This place is on my list the next time I'm in Honolulu!

If there ain’t mustard in my potato salad then I don’t want it!!!! 😂 mustard is essential for southern style potato salad 🙌 which is probably why I haven’t been much of a Mac salad fan… too mild and creamy but not enough twang to it lol. That's my area from 2002 to 2006. 2nd batch of pioneers for Starbucks Aiea Shopping Center. Used to have a takeout Chinese there that really has awesome food. Don't know if it's still open. I think Hughley's might be the Chinese take out before.

Dang, I was hoping you found a place other than this. Been here a few times and every time it's just ok. There was a place that was way better but it closed down, it was called Soul Cafe and it was in Kaimuki. I was sad when it closed down. Once you have amazing Southern food, you won't be satisfied by anything less.

not all Southern food is considered soul food, all soul food is definitely Southern. Soul food is an ethnic cuisine traditionally prepared and eaten by African-Americans in the Southern United States.

As a 50+ year southern chef, that learned from my depression era grandparents, I want to apologize that this is what you guys think southern food is. Right off the bat, Texas Pete is from NORTH CAROLINA (not Texus) I ate there as soon as I moved to the island, wanky spoiled overpriced sweet tea, disgusting grainy buttermilk chicken invented by Yankees to get rid of spoiled milk, canned collards, cornbread that has flour and sugar in it for some reason not southern. Wet Mac and cheese instead of baked, about the only thing they get right is the fried cats and puppies. Hopefully someday you'll go to the south and learn we fry chops, not boil them in gravy. Cube steak is what's served smothered. Once again, sorry this is the best representation of southern food, because it's not very good. ~ Jonesing for real southern food in Hawaii 😭
Yummo. Miss all the places I used to go to when I lived in Los Angeles. Still hesitant to eat catfish...don't like the bottom feeder taste. But you seemed to like it so I may do a combo with the smothered pork chop cuz it did look amazing. It's been awhile since I've been to Hughleys.
