As someone who currently owns betas, has owned betas, and has studied both wild and captive betas, a five gallon tank is the REQUIRED MINIMUM, in nature they live in gigantic heavily planted bodies of water(think rice fields)

Paul no the minimum size for a betta fish is 5 gallons. Next time get that. Other than that love the idea of the video. Instead of using sharp rocks use ones that are more rounded but it would be even better if you could fluval stratum or something like that so the plants could grow better (and top it off with sand) to make it look more nicer. For example, if you are struggling or need some help. Do some more research before buying this. (FFT). And also you have to cycle your tank before putting your fish in. So the beneficial bacteria can grow and flourish in your tank. One great additive would probably be an Amano shrimp just in case some algae will grow. Those things will wipe any algae out specifically hair algae.
The betta won't eat the shrimp?

@@beanj580betas attack other fish when they feel threatened or tested, animals like shrimp are pretty chill and don’t cause much problems, unless your getting another territorial fish your doing fine, also btw a lot of this is based on your fish’s personality, they can either be a prick or really chill.
He didn't need to do the cycle he put in quick start which adds beneficial bacteria to the tank
I appreciate you telling people not to buy bowls but then telling them that buying a three-gallon when the recommended minimum is a five-gallon is not a good thing to teach people.
Paul, the plants that you put in are Java ferns and they only grow on a piece of wood or stone. If you put them in substrate like you did then all the plants will die. Also I would recommend a little bit of a bigger tank for a betta fish. Hope that it maybe helped you a bit
Paul refuses to listen to helpful criticism like this. His child fans will also just call you a hater for pointing all of these well known fish keeping habits that he continually ignores. He usually deletes comments with any criticism, too.

@@JohnSmith-cq5qu yeah I agree a bit with that. You can’t criticize in this hobby because then your the fish police. And apparently that’s bad. It’s just that Paul is a big kid with a lot of money that doesn’t really know a lot about the hobby. He does take criticism sometimes but most of the time he just let’s the fish die because he doesn’t listen. He is a very good guy that wants the best for his fish but he doesn’t really reed in to fish before getting them
My Java ferns do good in substrate
@@eddiemendoza5010 yeah you can put them in substrate if you just don’t put them in to far into the substrate. Then yeah they could grow a bit. Some people also glue them to a rock and then they put the rock into the substrate
Usually five gallons is the minimum for betas. I'm obviously glad it isn't a bowl or a 1 or 2 gallon but five is definitely the actual minimum. But hey, live and learn, you guys really usually do the best you know of! :) always room to do better, nobody's perfect
Most people say 2.5 is okay now. Even the sub reddit which is pretty hyper sensitive agree
@@alexbwjathat’s false. The bare minimum for a betta is 5 gallons. Once you add decor into a 2.5gal it easily becomes crowded and that’s no way to live.

Paul, I have been watching you since you dug your first pond at your parent's house. From the good old days of mollies and platies. You have grown so much. I am happy that you are spreading happiness onto people. But every time you plant java ferns into substrate, it hurts me buddy. The java ferns, the windelov fern, the narrow leaf fern, They are epiphytes. they can't die if you tie them onto a piece of rock or a drift wood. But they will if you plant them like this... Come on man.. That aside, love what you do.
Dear Paul, while it is very generous and cute to give present betta to a subscriber you should keep in mind that they need at least 5 gallon to thrive and plan accordingly next time! ❤

Two things... I hate how topfin sells these tiny tanks and markets them as "betta tanks". They do much better with larger tanks.
But the most glaring thing is that the plants Paul put in are mostly java ferns and anubias. These are epiphytes and will die with their rhizomes covered by the gravel.

I mean a three gallon is alright but all the substrate everything make it two gallons. the plants will help the betta hide and feel comfortable so i would give this tanks a 7.5/10 . keep up the great work!
The ferns and java fern rhizomes shouldn't be buried in gravel cause it could rot . Amazon sword should be fine in gravel

paul you need to get into great freshwater aquascapes with a huge variety of plants, different rock sizes, depth to the aquarium and drift wood! just an idea, super cool when you get it all set up and it actually looks like a scene in the river/creek.

You're awesome, this is great. I recently was shopping for my 29g tank build and my son was with me, he saw a fancy finned black beta and fell in love, lol. So we grabbed a tank, plants, sand, beta bowl declorinator, and the fish. He's in a 5g heated, planted tank with some blue dream shrimp and blowing bubbles to his hearts content. Lol

I rescue bettas and 5 gallon minimum tank ,please toss that food! Bug bites is the way to go. Also, even in Hawaii they need a heater and The plants are gonna die with that substrate . Seachem

I am a completely new subscriber and this is the first video of yours I saw, you said you used to do videos like this in the good old days and I think you should bring it back or just start some CZcams series because I loved this video!!! But just the idea of going out getting a fish tank and a fish and setting it up with the whole process it’s so good for beginner fish keepers

Per usual, Paul completely ignoring the most basic fish keeping rules. It’s apparent he doesn’t even do the most surface level research on any of the animals he has. It’s no wonder such a large majority of them die prematurely
