- I cut up two strips of Koa given to me by viewer Rick.
I cut the pieces so the best of the grain would show.

I confess that I'm feeling some envy. I wish someone would give me some Koa, so I wouldn't have to spend $350 plus shipping to get some from Hawaii. Good for you Gary!
A few years ago a friend had a box of wood sent from Hawaii.
A shop that sells exotic wood will send a priority box full. There were 4 nice pieces of Koa.
Absolutely love this bowl Gary. The chatoyance of the Koa is amazing. That was very nice of Rich to send that to you. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thanks Scott. He actually hand delivered it to me. His son lives right down the road from me.
Thank you Gary. You had mentioned that you were working on this. I had no idea how nice it would look in the end. Very very nice. Made it worth me bringing it back in my suit case. 😂. I love segmented bowls, but I really like it when someone else does all of the work.
Thank you Rick. Always fun turning something that was in a suitcase. A friend of mine di this but only came from California.
Thanks again for this wood and the wood from last week.
Gary
That chatoyancy, Gary! What an eye catcher. You've made another incredible piece. Our club demonstrated segmented turning, this week. Thanks to you, I learned very little. :) Be well!
Thank you Jay. Well take that "Little" you learned and expand on it.
Have fun my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Oh, we have a great club. But I've learned a lot more from you and the others on CZcams. The connections in person are the big reason to be part of it.
That makes a lot of sense.
I never have belonged to any clubs. I have to admit that I have as much fun figuring things out as doing it.
As a wood patternmaker I was given drawings that had never been made before.
Guess it stuck with me.
@ThePapa1947 I get that. Prior to turning, I'd only done a bit of carpentry and building an ice fishing shack with my dad, in 1994. I watched my grandfather, who was a very skilled woodworker, but never really gained any understanding. So my beginning meant I benefited from mentorship. Grateful for those incredible, generous, men who got me going, successfully.
@@jayscott306 total understand what you are saying. A club is a good way to see how things can be done. You will need to pick what works the best for you.
My first turning was in 1961.
Once I did my two years I the Army my first turning as an apprentice was almost 6 inch diameter. The next was 6 foot in diameter. With many pump and valve bodies from 10-26 inch diameter. These all had to match supplied drawings.
I think a club is a wonderful for you. tool.
Wow! The flash of the chatoyance when it was on the turntable at the end!
Pretty cool isn't it. Nature at her best.
That species of wood is awesome to look at. Happy turning Gary. Great work as always.
Thank you Edward. Happy you liked it.
Gary
One of the coolest wood turnings I have ever seen!!!
Thank you Tom I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.
Gary
Hi Gary. Beautiful turning, I love the wood grain of the koa. As always thank you for sharing!
Thank you Mark. Koa is a very cool looking wood.
Happy you enjoy the video.
Gary
I really like how the light plays off the segments. Awesome job on the finish. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Dale. Almost like it has a built in light panel.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Rick is such a good person!
Gary I love this piece! Great job as always!!
Yes Rick is a very nice guy.
When I met him this time I told him it would be segments.
I met him about a year ago for the first time.
The chatoyance is spectacular. It looks like the bowl is made from mirrors. Nice job.
Thank you very much! Yes it sure does light up.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful!!!! The Koa wood is amazing
All the best
Yiannis
Thank you Yiannis!
Absolutely beautiful Gary.
Great to see you segmenting once more.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, Looks like I missed some comments.
Take care buddy!
Gary
Another beautiful piece Gary, so enjoyable to watch and learn thankyou for sharing
Thanks Ronnie I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Hi Gary. Your segmented bowls always look spectacular. Sorry to hear you were a bit off colour this week. thanks for the tip about not putting pressure on the segments until they were all aligned. It's the litle things that make the difference. As always, its much appreciated your sharing of your talents and videos. Thanks Bruce
Thanks you Bruce.
For sure with lots of segments some can setup and even if they are small be hard to move and get fresh glue and get flat again.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Very Nice Gary! Koa is so special, glad you made the most of it using segments. Thank you for making a shape with curves and not a traditional bowl. Do wish you had spend a bit more time showing how you cut out a multi-cuved interior of the bowl.
Hope you fell better quickly!
Thank you Ian. Sorry about not showing much on the inside. I just needed to get it done. I think my voice reflected that. I will be sure and show more on the next one.
Gary
Light bounces of the segments almost as if they are flat. Amazing 🙂
Thank you very much. Yes it is amazing how these pieces work with the light.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece and awesome wood. Great use of some very precious and increasingly rare wood. The shape is great and the beauty of the Koa is awesome.
Thank you Mark. It was hard for me to cut this up just because it is not easy to get. Sure happy it worked out.
Gary
Beautiful. Rick was very generous.
Thank you and yes Rick is a very generous person.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Mahalo Gary, Koa is one of my favorites. Beautiful bowl, nice shape and size. I'm glad you're feeling better , keep up the good work.
Thank you Mark. I have two nice kiln dried boards another friend had sent to me from a shop in Hawaii.
That is some awesome wood, and what a wonderful shape on the bowl. Thanks so much for sharing, and especially the tip about glue ups. That's a really big deal. Thanks!
Thank you Mark.
I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.
Gary
Well done Gary. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Garry that I must say is a beautiful piece of wood and I also love the shape you chose for the piece, great job.
Thanks Alan. Koa is pretty special.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, that turned out awesome I love watching you work it’s so satisfying and gratifying keep up the good work
Thank you Ken I appreciate your comments.
Gary
Hi Gary
Loved the proses of hluing the rings, and the way the light hits the segments, amazing.
Thanks Jim. Pretty amazing piece of wood for sure.
Gary
This is the first time I’ve come across your video and I loved it. That wood is absolutely gorgeous and your design is so unique. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thanks so much Laurie I appreciate your comments and hope to hear from you in more of my videos.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Looking at your finished piece of Koa is the reason why turners do segmented turning. Every turning is different and the sheen (my not be spelled right) is much more evident. It may take longer to glue up and balance each ring but the end result is spectacular! I never know what it will look like until it done. Very nice piece.
Thank you Paul. I find it very important to have the grain showing tbe best. It can all be lost in a glue joint.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary. I have not done any segmented work in a long time now and you're making me think about it. Take care, my friend
Thanks Josh. Got myself in the mood to do more.
Gary
Beautiful piece Gary, the chatoyance is breathtaking .
Thank you very much Ronald!
What amazing wood! Great job, thanks for showing us the magic...
Thank you Steve and thanks for watching,
Gary
Just awesome. I have been missing these projects. Thanks
Thank you Barry I am working on a few ideas based on segments. Hope to at them soon.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Really beautiful, Gary! Koa has amazing chatoyance!
Thanks Billy. It is almost like each piece has its own lighting.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gorgeous! And an interesting technique for getting the most out of wood that you don't otherwise have enough of.
Thank you Susan. That is what segmented turnings is all about.
I will have more segmented turnings coming soon.
Gary
You sound terrible, Buddy! My gosh, I hope you are feeling better by now.
Great job of explaining how you glue the segments together with little pressure to allow the glue to soak in. Completely understandable. Cool design and WOW, what a finish! Really nice job, my friend! I hope you are well and feeling much better. 😊
Phil
Thanks Phil. Yeah I noticed how ruff I sounded. I should have had Laverna do a sound over. Oh wait that should get tons of views.
Feel better my friend.
Thanks for asking.
Gary
The Koa is a real stunner. I think you made good use of the wood by creating a segmented bowl, too. The light plays across it beautifully. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Jerry koa is a very special wood. The light plays nicely with the grain.
Thanks for watching, Gary
Wow Gary. That’s beautiful wood. Wish I could get my hands on some of that. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Charles. It sure is nice wood and feel very lucky to have gotten it.
Gary
Not my cup of tea but I always enjoy your mastery and videos!
Thank you Anita. I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Здравствуйте, Гэри ! Красивая древесина. Хорошая работа! Спасибо.
Спасибо, мой друг, за добрые слова,
Gary
Very nice I love the koa wood. It is great information on cutting the segment for multi layers.
Thank you David. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Gary once again you have made a beautiful bowl. I have to try and make a segmented bowl some time. You have got a very beautiful finish on this project. It just makes this piece
Thanks so much Dave. Happy you like it and appreciate you watching.
Gary
Beautiful, Gary! Great use of an exquisite piece of wood. When my soulmate & I were in the botanical gardens in Kauai several years back, there were huge solid Koa park benches 10' or 12' long, 20" or so wide, & probably 8" thick. Made this old woodworker downright salivate! (Thought briefly about sneaking a couple into the overhead bins for the flight back, but......)
Great story for sure! Also a good way to get locked up LOL
WOW absolutely beautiful, that is one wood we can't get here but you sure made it look great! I do segments in similar way that you do and have no problem, I just make sure there is lots of glue on it! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al, not local here as well. Nice having a good friend.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gorgeous. I’ve only had a very small piece of Kia. It is beautiful wood. Love this segmented piece. Excellent work.
Thank you Doug. It is a pretty cool wood for sure. Right up there with Walnut😎
Looks great Gary. Good use of the wood blanks.
Thanks Tom. I had to think about it for a long time. Other option was a bowl from a board. But this way those segments did the talking.
Gary
Beautiful Gary! I’ve been away the last couple of weeks so missed a bunch. We were in Mexico for a while then up to the Cariboo area of BC to help my son in law reno their new house (with more to come). I absolutely love Koa. I have a Taylor Koa guitar that looks as amazing as it sounds. What a great idea to segment that piece in order to make a gorgeous bowl. As it’s turning it looks like mirror tiles sparkling. So glad you are feeling better in order to do these more complex turnings!! Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. Koa makes a great guitar for sure.
More segment turnings coming.
Sounds like some great trips coming for you.
Gary
Hope you’re feeling better Gary and Nice job the bowl looks Awesome, that koa is some pretty cool looking wood, Enjoyed the video 😎👍
Thank you Kimsey. Back on the mend! Yes Koa is really cool wood.
Gary
Nice work Gary, I have never turned Koa but it is on my wishlist.
I turned some a friend gave me. It was a sample pack of wood from Hawaii. Her friend has a shop there
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Making segment rings is a lot of work but when you have them, they really add to any piece you make with them.
Thnx for sharing Gary! 😎
Thank you Leo. Can be a lot of work. But the kind I like.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The bowl is absolutely gorgeous! My grandson lives in Hawaii and he is sending me some Koa.
Wow that is great Carol. You will love it
Gary
Oh my gosh Gary !! This bowl is just gorgeous ! The grain is really impressive ! Wow ! We sure hope you feel better and have a great cold weekend .
Thanks so much Jon and feeling much better.
Gary
Beautiful piece Gary and very informative video. I'm not a segment turner but I think I have a decent enough setup to give it a whirl someday. My lathe has a swiveling headstock and I didn't know how much I would appreciate that feature until I started using it. I now use it on almost any kind of hollowing. Love your videos
Thanks David. Years ago I had a jet lathe that had a swivel head. I never did rotate it but it is a good idea.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
HI gary ur rite it is beautiful wood. great shape bowl. weldone.
Thanks Manjit!
Nice Turning Gary! I made all the jigs for segmented bowls and still have not made any! 😂 Hope your foot is much better. Happy turning,
Thank you Doug. Foot is much better thank you.
Gary
Another beautiful bowl, Gary! The chatoyance is off the hook!
Thank you Clayton!
lovely work! thanks for sharing your talents!
Thank you and thanks for watching,
Gary
I sure do like the shape and you did good. Back in the eighties my sister sent me a big box of koa from Hawaii. I was sure some of it was old growth
I wasted it on.cribbage boards and pens. Never made a bowl.
Thanks Garth. A friend we volunteered with use to live in Hawaii. Her friends had a shop where they sold wood. She had them send me a proximity box filled with some cool wood. Couple nice pieces of KOA. I made my friend a beautiful segmented bowl from one of the pieces.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, thank you for making a BEAUTIFUL bowl!
You are very welcome. I appreciate you watching Crystal!
...ahhh, koa...my favorite wood grain...beautiful bowl, cool shape and great technique!...👍
Matt
Thank you Matt for your wonderful comments.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful segment work and wood.
Thank you very much Ladonna I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece Gary...nice work...Rick if you have any more of that nasty Koa cluttering up your shop I'd be glad to take it off your hands😂😂...stay safe...press on 😎 Joe
Thanks Joe, I have all messages to Rick blocked LOL
Beautiful! I love Koa.❤
Thank you Jen!
Beautiful bowl, Gary. I love the flash of the wood as it turns. I could see the chatoyance in the blanks before you started cutting.
Bill
Gary, Koa is a beautiful wood and looks like it’s very easy to turn. The finish looks great and the chatoyance is an outstanding feature. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you Skip. It is a very special wood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you Bill. Oh yeah that is how I picked the face of the segments. But the other way all of it would have been a glue joint.
Hello again Gary, what a beautiful piece you made! Thank you for sharing ! And..greetings from us in Holland 🌷🌷🌷
Thanks so much Jan. Your comments are very much appreciated.
Gary
Very nice Gary. The piece is just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I will see you next time
Many thanks Albert!
Beautiful wood, beautiful grain and beautiful bowl. Hope you get well soon.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful Bowl Gary!
Thanks so much@
Wow Gary amazing chatoyance. I’m not much for water-based Minwax, but this is beautiful.
Thanks Kevin. I use anything that works good for me. But it needs to fit the look I want.
If you were to look at the soccer ball I made I used the water based on it. It still looks the same as it did when I finished it.
But I get it you need to use what you like the best. What is your favorite?
Gary
Gary, Lately I have been using waterlux satin and gloss. The only downside is side is the dry time between coats and the cost. On some of my crotch bowls which have embossed pictures I use lacquer. I should give the water base a try again sometime . It could have been my application process that made it turn out like it had pimples all over.
I've only worked with Koa once, for a picture frame. Really nice stuff! Bowl is great!
Thank you Ben. It sure is a special wood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece of work.
Thanks so much Lynda!
Another great segment project by the Professor! Unbelievable wood.
Thank you!
Super awesome bowl. Really like segment pieces. I am gonna have to make that sled so that I can attempt some of my own. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Go for it! You will enjoy doing segments.
Gary
That is very beautiful!,
Thank you Bennett I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Nice work as always -
Thank you very much. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Looks good, Gary.
Thank you Brad l appreciate you watching .
Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary. 😊😊 pro tip. Keep a jacket in the shop. Our weather is all over the place. 😊
Thanks Rob. Us armatures need all the help we can get when it comes to listening to the weather man here in Oregon.
Thank you for doing this and please share any information on segmented turning. I'm trying to improve my skills and every little bit helps.
Thank you Brad. I have a few segmented turnings planned out. Hope to get to them soon.
Gary
Looks really nice Gary. I’ve always wanted to work koa. I really need to try a segmented bowl soon. I keep saying that but I need to get off my butt and make a sled to cut the segments.
Thank you very much. Yes a sled will really help.
Have fun when you do try it.
Gary
Beautiful shimmer in that Koa! Thanks for the glue up demo.
Thanks Valerie. I think I may have answered some of these comments but was on my cell phone with a not so good connection.
Gary
That is amazing! one of my dream woods but not yet.
Thanks Lewis. It sure is an amazing wood.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
I like the result. I’m not patient enough to do a segmented bowl.
Thank you and I can understand that at times.
Gary
Beautiful...as always
Thank you very much I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Beautiful! 👍
Thanks so much!
T shirt this time of yr, have you got central heating in your workshop, hey haven't heard that type of wood before, lot of work there Gary but it sure was worth it, absolute beautiful finish on that piece, love the shape as well great job. Hope all's going well with you're leg. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thanks so much Gary. I have a decent floor heater that is pretty quiet. Was about to try another but the ankle set me back
Now it is getting warm.
Gary
That was amazing love the finish Pierre
Thank you my friend.
Gary
It’s another work of workmanship!!!
Bob
Thank you very much Bob. I appreciate you watching,
Gary
So beautiful
Thank you grambear8
A very beautiful bowl Gary.
Many thanks Jack and thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Very nice!
Thanks
Beautiful
Thanks so much I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Lovely
Thanks so much Patricia May.
Gary
Absolutely stunning, Gary! The chattoyance is off the charts! On the turntable it reminds me of a Christmas tree with blinking lights. And Rick, if you're reading the comments, if you have any extra Koa I can help you with that 😂
Thanks!
Muy bonito le quedo
Thank you very much!
Beautiful. I bought the water based sanding sealer. I hate the stuff. I guess im not using it correctly. You get amazing results from it.
You can email me and I can walk you through how I use it. It is about as simple as can be.
Another great video. Glad you are back in the saddle again. What month do you get consistently warm days there in the northwest?
Thanks Stevio.
We have mountains on one side and the ocean on the other.
The weather can be a guess around here. But I would say end of June it starts getting pretty nice.
Nice job Gary. Do you flatten your rings? Or put them through a thickness sander
Thanks Burtt. i have a large disk sander where I flatten one side. I then glue it in place and flatten the face while on the lathe.
No room for a drum sander at the moment. Plus it is really not any faster.
Gary
Beautiful wood and shape. Does the Minwax wipe-on poly change color over time? I like what you are using to finish this and want to try it. As for the bud vase project I told you about a while back, well, things went wrong in the design and construction. I will try again. The main thing that went wrong was the creator of the project. Haha I will send a photo of a couple of projects that worked. I enjoyed this video as usual and learned stuff too. Thanks for sharing your work and thoughts.
Thank you Travis. No the water based Polyacrylic stays as clear as can be. The oil based has a slight tint but does not darken with age.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good use of your wood. I always enjoy watching your segmented bowl videos. How does the toasted (or roasted??) oak turn compared to regular white oak?
Thank you Stuart.
The roasted oak chips easy and does not have much strength.
Gary
How do you keep the glue from sticking to the wood under the ring and over the ring in the press? Very nice Gary! Always a good video!
My glue press is well waxed plus when I clamp it down and get it flat sometimes I take it out of the press and wipe it down.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Have you ever made a video on making that sled just curious?
I have not but I think there are lots out there. I downloaded the plans from segasy.com
But cheated and programmed it and cut the arcs on my CNC milling machine.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947
thanks for getting back , love watching your videos , you make it easy for me to follow along with what your doing!
I’m way late in starting this woodturning and enjoying this a lot .I just want to try everything now but I know I need to pace myself and not get overwhelmed
