This is a truly in-depth review that can only be achieved from extensive real-world use. I loved the commentary about the hex key being secure when inserting on one side, and also how grabbing the tripod might eject the hex key. Brilliant video!
I love when people take the time to do thorough, long term reviews. 👍
Great review, and thanks for taking the time to point out the subtleties of the carbon vs aluminum. This review tipped me to the carbon, so thx!
💥💥 Great review, thank you. You covered everything… except.
To shoot low you don’t have to flip the center column upside down along with the camera which is awkward. The center column itself is two sections. There is a seam up high near the ball head at the top. With the supplied wrench you can take off the longer bottom section then stick the short top section back into the tripod legs. No center column protrudes down at that point and you can swing the legs up high to the side and the mounting surface for the camera is only a couple of inches off of the ground at that point.
No one seems to know about this feature. 🤟🏼
Great review... I too found the bag a bit awkward, but I like the form fit. It takes up way less space in your carry-on or when stowed in an external backpack pocket. My solution to the hex key pop out issue... put a small keychain loop on it and use a short length of velcro to pass through the loop and around the leg. Stays put now and will not accidentally come loose.
Can you explain that more please?
@@Jimmy_Cavallo Just place a normal kay chain loop on it as if you were going to hang it on your key ring, then use a 1/4" strip of velcro through that and around the tripod leg when the hex key took it in its holder. Keeps the thing from popping out and getting lost.
@@csimet ok, gotcha. Thanks for that good tip
Love the no rush, long term review. I have the aluminum one and love it!
yo, going to get mine soon, does the vibration on the aluminium version going to affect much?
@@kinfuilee9460 No, not at all. I’d say the weight is mainly the deciding factor here.
@@Shadow_Men Thanks for the reply man, appreciate it... Going to pick it up soon as currently was lockdown. can't wait...!!
Thanks for the review note that it inverts, I watched 3 reviews of this product & this was the first one that explained that detail... &, of course, it's all in those details.
I got the carbon version and I love it.Like you said it's not perfect but for space savings and weight I thinks its as good as I could reasonable wish for.
One major think I miss with PD travel tripod, there is no horizontal position for the centre post. Or I could not find any additional attachment rod I can use it as horizontal positions.
Ok I just learned 2 new things that nobody else has talked about in videos before I purchased mine about a month or so ago. The little pocket inside the case, which actually has some sort of tool in it. Then the pull out on that twist knob. Had no idea that popped out to make it easier to tighten or loosen. Thanks!
Can buy a butterfly screw from any camera shop and use that instead. But i think the reason PD is stuck with LNKey hole to secure camera better.
Great video! Thinking about getting it. Here's the thing: my rig is a Canon R6 with adapter and 24-70mm.
Think it'll hold?!

Great review mate, I love my Peak Design gear, I agree about the tool kit, I lost mine the first night I used the tripod but Peak Design customer service came to the party and sent me a replacement for free, excellent customer service goes a long way in my book.
I bought Aluminium one. Its very compact in shape. But heavy , probably used good materials. But no where near the high quality finishing as Manfrotto. I guess the weight is much above what they indicate. Aluminium one is 1.75 Kg.
Great in-depth review! I still hang on the fence about this tripod--but yours is one of the best long-term reviews I've seen. Thanks for this!
This is an excellent review, as it is detailed. I have watched several, this is the only one that offered the tidbits about the hex key fit and being careful not to knock it out with your hand! I ordered one used from PD market and look forward to receiving it! Thanks for a great review. I am more confident I made a great purchase after watching this review.
Good review. I neglected for long time the support for my cameras and lenses and so far only have a table and ground tripod. Still need a systematic tall tripod and was thinking if to get a travel tripod as well.
The good thing about Peak Design compared to RRS or Gitzo, is that includes a ball head in the price, though it doesn't seem like a great one. Also, RRS is much stiffer and Gitzo is much lighter.
Honestly, I like the tripod, but paying $600 for the carbon fiber version is too much.
This review was immensely helpful. Thanks for putting this together and sharing!
Great video and review. Personally, I think people over emphasize the difference in weight between CF and Aluminum, but to each their own. I don't think a little bit over 1 pound difference is enough for me to spend an extra $250, but again, to each their own.
Depends on what you're doing... I use mine hiking up mountains a lot. Every ounce matters.
@@brianthompson9485 it matters but... as I'm wearing 20kg already it's not big deal to wear 300 grams more while I can buy a whole new lens with those 250 USD :D
@@dicekolev5360, sure... but people spend far more money and go to far greater lengths in an attempt to lose 300g.
@@brianthompson9485 Agree. Plot twist - I bought the Carbon one yesterday :D Ah, it's so elegant 🤌 Literally just entering from first time using it outside and so far, so good 😏
Is it me or you have a limitation on the adjustment on the vertical shots?
Great review. Thanks. I’m sold. I’ve had a few of their bags, and the original Leash. They make fantastic products.
Great review. Really well done. Seems this tripod is even more expensive now. How sturdy is the ball head? Seems like it would be the weakest link?
Does it accept Arca Swiss inserts?
I have to say you made a great product video, informative, and super well shot. Nice job man
Very well done video. Thank you for sharing this with us. I would definitely go with carbon fibre, especially in cold clients like mine in Atlantic Canada. Metal can be hard on the hands. 😀
Superb video and review. Very concise and thorough. Thank you. I HAVE JUST ONE QUESTION: What's your opinion on the carbon fiber version possibly not being as stable (a little more bouncy) than the aluminum one? I've heard rumors of that. Do you know, or have you heard this too? It's so hard to justify the extra whopping $250! for just a mere 1/2 a pound of weight savings, especially if the carbon fiber version comes with any drawback.
Great review! My local camera dealer suggested this model but I wasn't sure...You sealed the deal.
I wonder if it can hold a 70200gm to shoot the moon. So camera and lens are less than 8lbs, but I have a mefoto backpacker that can hold that much weight but the ball can't hold the lens in the upward angle needed to shoot the moon.
Can i know if this tripod would be suitable for overhead shots?
It's not ideal for top down shots. The ball head doesn't extend out so you can get a clean top down shot without the tripod legs being in the shot.
Outstanding review. The most useful one I've seen. I'm also in the STL so appreciated the arch backdrop..
Great job - Helped me decide on the cf version. Keep up the good work!
Glad I could help!
It's really weird that peak design works change their clip design so much! I have the v1 pro clip and plate, as well as a secondary V2 plate and they both have the hex key hole as well as a lateral slit cut into the screw to be able to use a coin or other flat object to tighten the screw on the fly. I'd definitely suggest looking for an early version clip plate cuz those were so well designed!
The v1 pro plate featured removable rc2 conversion bars on the sides which didn't benefit me as I don't own a manfrotto tripod but I can definitely see the usefulness if you needed to borrow a tripod and that was your only option.
great review and breakdown of the basic usage. I'm gonna check your other videos.
This was super informative thank
You for posting 👌🏻
I know those backgrounds. You must be from STL like me. Subscribed!
how to switch between a slider/gimbal to this? is there a universal adapter to fix it?
By far the best tripod review 👍 well done.
Personally I’m about to get the aluminum version since carbon fiber can explode over a certain altitude 🥲
Dude, you covered everything that need to be known. Best review! 🙌🏻
I'm using a Manfrotto tripod at the moment which isn't as sleek and light as this one, but at least it's extremely easy to mount the plate to the camera. I hate those hex keys. Big miss from Peak Design, €399 for the aluminium and €669 for the carbon version is nuts.
Thank you for the review. And for the info about replacing the ball head with the one of your choice.
How come you're being recommended now? It's been years. Good to be back.
Liked your review. Have an idea what an alternative could be if you can afford it?
I have the cf and I agree wholeheartedly with your review. Awesome tripod.
Thanks for the review, and love the “Tim Apple” shirt 😆
thanks for the video. what is the height difference at full height versus the manfrotta tripod you had at first.
i guess Im randomly asking but does anybody know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Noe Cameron Instablaster ;)
@Yusuf Raymond Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Yusuf Raymond It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
@Noe Cameron No problem =)
Love the shirt!!! Tim Apple!
can support the weight of a footage motorise slider??
It's definitely not perfect (slightly flimsy legs on the aluminum version and clumsy locking design for the head), but considering how compact it is and easy to deploy (I much prefer clasp to screw locking for deployment of the legs), it was ideal for me. I rarely shoot with a tripod due to how cumbersome they are so this tripod was one of the only options.
Any light weight tripod is going to be flimsy if not weighted. Hang your camera bag from the center column.
Great review - told me just what I needed to know. A big thanks.
What bag is that I love it
Hey, man. I was 20 seconds into your video, and hit "pause" to subscribe. I am a former Soldier, too, and I like your style already. I bought this tripod, too. I actually bought the carbon fiber one for my wife and the aluminum one for me. I like the design. I, too, had a tripod (a Sirui carbon fiber) and it was too bulky. Even though it was somewhat light, it still took up a lot of space. Anyway, I like your content and look forward to seeing more.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for your service! What are your thoughts on CF vs AL? One stiffer than the other?
Just what I needed to know. Thanks for this comprehensive review! I think I’m going to go for it and buy one.
Is this really worth it over say a $200 Manfrotto Befree Live Aluminium Lever-Lock Tripod ?
Thanks for this run down!
Thank you for such a (very) complete review!
Great review, thanks!!
What’s that brown leather Apple Watch band?
very good review! the quality of this video is amazing
I’ll probably get a lens for that price but cool video
$350 for a lens? Ok😂
Skip yep or at least money off 🤷🏽♂️
Awesome thorough review
Thank you!
Can you do top down shots with it?
Good review. Gets right to the point.
This is so helpful, thanks so much!
Great Review and to the point. Thank you.
Great review. Much appreciated.
Hey, thanks for the review. I'm currently considering this tripod, so I really appreciate the in-depth overview. Also, your video quality is insane. So sharp, great focus. Good shit lol. Your shirt is also amazing.
Nice review!
Wow never seen someone show all these hidden features
Thank you - good info
Great review. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Hmm looks really great other than the hex key, that part makes no sense. Thanks!
great review and your voice 🙂
Will the topnwork with an arca swiss plate?
You just need to remove the 2 pins, then you can slide in an arca plate.
That snow footage made my skin shiver.
Great review, btw.!
Yea I'm a real life snowman lol. That weather felt great to me.
Great review thanks!
Super cool review!
This is a great video. I have the backpack and just ordered the tripod :). Great channel btw!
Great informative video, thanks.
Pretty good review thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
Look at all that STL footage! I first noticed the shot by the landing! Another STL youtuber here. 👊🏼
Awesome review... Thanks...
I really like your humor great vidoe
Top review. 👍🏼
Shout out to The Lou!
Did you use a lot of hand moisturiser in this video?
Great video. The information provided was very well thought out and presented. Thanks.
I had the exact same problem with the manfrotto which you used as well. Just bought the peak design travel tripod today and saw your vid! Btw where’s the rocky beach area you were at in sf? Sutro baths?
Oh wow I even bought the exact same backpack as you. Did you get the 20L midnight?
Great review
Thank you for such a great review!
Thx for watching!
THANK YOU. I bought this tripod and have been going crazy trying to figure out how to use it. It is deceptively complicated. Do you know if the clips at the top of the legs do anything?
Yes, the top clips are used to remove the legs from the tripod: czcams.com/video/9nWZIuiMRzw/video.html
Glad you like it. Lance left a comment with the video from Peak about the clips, but I basically use them for being able to extend the legs outwards to get a lower shot.
Brother were is ur country...
USA.
This jawn like $350🥴 Yeaaaaaaaah they can keep that lol
lol yea it's an investment, but I plan on using it for many years.
Have a look at the price of a Gitzo
STILL CANT BELIEVE U REPLY TOO ME U ONE OF MY FAVORITE CZcamsR LOVE YOUR WORK EVEN THOUGH U MITE NOT SEE ME ON THE COMMENTS
Oh for sure. Glad you like!
Well done!
Great content, an amazing insight on this amazing gear. Do you trust in the endurance of this masterpiece?
Thanks for those kind words and I think this will hold up well for a while. The battery does last a long time, two days with moderate use easy, and if this gets consistent software updates, it should have good endurance.
@@SoldierKnowsBest I was talking about the tripod..LoL (:
Thanks for the review bro!! Subscribed
GEEEEZUS! $600+ AU? DANG.... I bought an awesome Vanguard travel tripod to fit in one of my saddlebags for less than 100 bucks. Very solid design with a ball head and carry bag. Anyway, nice review.
Great review video! Thx!
Awesome video. Love the detail.
Nice video SKB!
Thanks!
