Back in the mid-1980s, I was a field tech that used to fly between Chicago and Boston. I used to carry my computer boards and tools in carry-on luggage, and at one point needed to carry some extra parts and tools in a regular cardboard box even though the majority of the parts were already shipped. The looks by the airline and terminal employees was priceless.

@mygenericusername I used to work at a glass manufacturing shop. We shipped glass panels by wrapping it entirely in 2 layers (minimum) of cardboard and folding the cardboard over the edges. If it's tempered glass we only wrapped around the edges like a picture frame because the face of tempered glass is ridiculously strong & the edges are tempered glass' weakness also we weren't worried about it getting scratched. But if you are worried about it getting scratch then definitely just wrap it entirely.

Because of how much I travel for work (and how much frustration I had with laptops having issues) I built a computer specifically designed to be easily transportable. It's roughly the size and shape of a briefcase (even has a handle on the case, thanks Silverstone), has all solid state storage, an ultra-low profile cpu cooler and a small form factor 2070 mounted on a bolt down riser and secured with a bracket. Unless you have a pc specifically designed for travel like this, be super careful traveling with them (even if you're driving not flying. That nasty pothole that spilled your coffee might just dislodge your GPU too)

The system is a brief case type computer that weighs about 22 lbs. and has an 8088, 512K of RAM, 2x 5-1/4", 1.2MB floppies, composite and 9-pin VGA video, a 25-line LCD display integrated into the cover, a parallel port, 2 serial ports and an IBM expansion port. The issue with graphics cards made me realize why OEM Gaming or Workstation PCs often have braced graphics cards. They need the heavy coolers to cool high performance parts but they don’t want users to have to either install the parts or pull out expanding foam since doing that for 100+ PCs in an office would take a lot of time and Timmy whose parents bought a PC off Best Buy or Walmart, either doesn’t know how to do it or is not comfortable with it.

Bought parts for it on November 2021, went to US on June 2022, built the pc, accepted the fact that I can’t take all the boxes except for my graphics card and sacrificed two luggages; one for monitor, one for entire pc and wrapped it in bubble wrap. I prayed that the PC stayed in one piece once I acquired the luggage with two wheels missing. I can explain one reason: Firmware setup, in short stability is more important here then speed.
Basically the code on it is far deeper and more robust. One of the things enabled in it are deeper checks for RAM as well as there are often far more services (I.e. basic to advanced drivers enabled via firmware) that load for all the more complex and growing level of devices on servers.

I started to travel between my dorm and home with it, but the way I transport it is boxing the GPU back in its original packaging, and putting the CPU cooler in a box with air pouches. Everything else in the case is secured, so it goes upright between the backseat and front passenger seat, the latter of which is adjusted to be flat against the case snugly. The monitors are tied with rope face down to a bin (that holds the boxed GPU, CPU cooler, as well as tools, keyboard, mouse, and headset packaged inside) and my suitcase with pillows under the screens. The monitors and PC case are put inside plastic garbage bags on the slightest chance of rain. I've done that for a few years now, and no issues to report. LOL
But seriously, do you mean 3-4 gpus or 3-4 full systems?
If you mean gpus, there's a ton of options for that.
Even the most generic ATX case can, depending on width of the gpus.
Something like a fractal design define 7xl can easily handle 3-4 gpus, even 40 series.
When searching, consider the width of the cards and then multiply that by the number of expansion slots the case will need.
If you're dealing with 3-4 double wide cards, the case will need 8 expansion slots.
      4090's, 12(or more) expansion slots.
The fractal 7xl has 12 slots, although one 4090 gpu would have to be side mounted.
If, on the other hand, you mean full systems, there's no practical reason and you run into a lot of issues, such as heat management and accessibility.
      That's why servers exist.

I once put oil onto the bearing of an old fan. After checking on it after some runtime, I noticed that the fan „sprayed“ the oil everywhere in my PC (due to centrifugal force?). Oof.

What are some ways of storing external HDDs to avoid them potentially getting damaged? I have 4 external Seagate plugin in powered HDDs that I use and need a way of storing them when not in use so they don't get damaged. I have a hard case with foam in it that I use to store 3 smaller external HDDs, but I have not been able to find one big enough to store external drives the size of the Seagate drives, and any hard cases I have seen that are large, are A) usually expensive and B) not tall enough so any advice on what I could do?

One question I keep asking is
if I should unplug my laptop when I am home. I use a laptop as a desktop replacement at home and don't want to deal with constantly charging it when I don't need to operate it on the battery but I Don't want to wear out the battery prematurely. What would be the best way to keep my laptop powered and preserve the battery by not overcharging it?

May I be brave enough to ask. WHERE IS THE DOCUMENTATION FOR DISASSEMBLING TOSHIBA TECRA LAPTOPS? I had to figure out how to take apart my Tecra A11 S3540 without help the hard way. And now I have to do it again due to non-existent mounting pressure for the paste on the gpu so I'm getting GELID pads instead of using paste, and this time I'm double checking to find marks on the pad to prove I installed them right so I can finally rescue my NVS 2100M and play games again.

My 2060’s fan was rattling shortly after I got it on eBay. Thought it was the cable so I readjusted it and things were worse! Took my card out and all of the screws in the top of the fan shroud were missing!!! I found one in my case and pulled the bottom middle out so I would have a screw in all four corners. Just like that, no more rattling!!

As it happens, I recently took a spare older gaming PC over to some relatives in checked airplane luggage :D
I took out anything unnecessary (mostly HDD cages) to save weight and removed the GPU and stored it in my hand luggage to make sure it doesn't get knocked out and destroyed in and out of the cargo hold. Stuffed a bunch of clothes around to soften any knocks. The PC only had one SSD in there, otherwise I'd have removed any HDDs too.
The PC arrived undamaged and was successfully assembled for the relatives to enjoy 👍

Can it be dealt with or it's just how it is?

  • @renedelarosa2513

Question: I noticed my pc preforms less than what it's supposed to and I'm not sure what the real issue could be, I first noticed when I was comparing fps with a friend who has a 3070(both games where at 1080p max settings), I have a 10900k, 32 gigs of 3600 memory (running at 2900 unfortunately), and a 3080. I did kinda cheap out on the mother could that be it? I can't overclock the CPU or run the ram to it's rated speeds. I'd like to point out that my temps are fine.

I say never check anything that cant safely fall at least 10 feet and have another bag land on top of it. Basically, never check a computer with any glass or graphics card weighing much at all. How to fix blurry apps - it seems most people don't know why this happens in the first place, and that if you choose a screen with a good combination of PPI and size ( that would have UI scale 100%/200%/300% a comfortable one), it won't be blurry, just pixelated (so also that you are never loosing quality by choosing higher PPI screen)
