The Comparison Between Generation X and Generation Z Over40

- Both Generations have their pros and cons. No one can perceive others identity or entity. Gen Z thinks 👍 is our secret ‘f-you’? 😂 Nope, it’s just us being too tired to type.

In the words of our people, WHATEVER.👍🏻
Exactly!
Yes!
👍
I refuse! She should eat lead paint chips She has a few in already!
👍
To everyone who thinks 👍 is flipping the bird...No. Just no.
We have no issues telling you straight up 🖕.
I love it!
As a Gen X when I give the single diget salute, I make sure they understand.
🖕 🖕
CZcams keeps deleting my comment because I use the double single digital salute emoji.. * * * * you youtube.
@@edstar83 That sucks!
My I don't give a dam button has been on since age 25.Foget the emoji, they will get the real deal with a smile. 😊
Good to know. Use 👍 excessively!👍👍👍👍👍
Maybe she's mad because she just figured out we sometimes use the 👍when don't want to respond in detail?
I think that "maybe" is more of an "oh H*** YES"....I think they REALLY like to feel "heard" and if you're not actively participating in the crazy they feel lonely and isolated...heaven forbid that that moment of loneliness and isolation should be a moment of self reflection...just sayin'...great vid...thumbs up!!! :)
Right? I use it as the equivalent of a Star Trek "Acknowledged."
To anyone offended by this: 👍
I believe I speak for most of us 'over 40's' when I say:
Awwww, we are soooooo sorry you are offended.... we hereby issue a formal apology to your over-sensitive little hearts.... here ya go: 🖕🏻
Take that to your safe space, you precious little sweetheart (where you can sit and spin on it for all we care!) 😂
Have the day you deserve! 😉
no we DO NOT apologize. we dont care if u need a safe space or not. we dont care if u r offended. Gen X was taught: sink or swim, wimp.
end of story. Your feelings are YOUR responsibility& YOUR business.
My kids are cool.I'm a musician so they love all 80s.Music and they know the difference between thumbs up and a finger.Thank god my wife and I raised them the right way
As a musician also, playing music of an older generation is the best education you can give your kids!
Every Saturday night, my parents packed us up to go to my Grandmother's for dinner, listening to Wolfman Jack playing music from 50s-70s. I was able to catch some of the jokes in movies/tv because of all the music I knew. All my friends would look at me odd because I knew all the lyrics to "old" music.🤣 That was back in the 80s and early 90s.
Lots of historical and cultural nuggets can be found in music that enhances your knowledge of history and events. I got lots of compliments from adults growing up that I knew so many songs and could understand some history with a little more context.
If you cant handle a thumbs up then how the hell you gonna make it in his life? Life is tough, wear a cup
When I use the thumbs up, it means "I acknowledge you but don't have the energy to reply," and "Ok. Cool." in the most tired voice you can imagine.
Millennial here. I don't want to be lumped in with the weird stuff Gen Z hyperfixates on. Most of us Millennials want to mind our business and not make too much eye contact with Gen Z. I treat them like the crazy person on the subway, just stay quiet, don't make any fast movements, and hope the pass over you.
Well, they were doing the lumping, but they were lumping you in with us. I've had worse things happen.
To quote the great philosopher: "oh well, whatever nevermind"
I saw a video earlier where we were all being accused of dishonoring him by not cancelling Metallica. I can't even imagine what would have happened back in the day, if someone tried that. Gee!
THIS!!! I use 👍 frequently when talking to millennials. The going in circles can be exhausting and the thumbs up quickly takes me out the loop and end the conversation before my mood changes.
The fact that Gen z is so emotional over such a neutral or polite emoji😂
Welcome to the age of entitlement. Spoiled rotten brats that think their whining about their inability to differentiate the differences between a thumbs up and fu. Time for an eye exam, CT scan and a few more pharmacy pills... how about sharing the Fuckitol pills we genx have been swallowing since birth? The ones that say, stay in your own lane, or we will drive a humv over you. (And use all the sarcastic and scathing cut downs we've learned over the years).
I do as well. I've never had a Millennial say one thing about it.
Trust me...if we flip you off..you probably gonna feel it😮
hellz yeah. we have no need or desire & barely the ability to candy-coat shit to protect your feelings.... right?
As an English teacher, I've been agonizing about kids' lack of vocabulary. Now, they can't read emojis? Tough times, indeed.
Never thought 👍🏼 was anything negative... that's a stretch.
Funny thing is that the damn “like” icon is a thumbs up. Not our fault
Oh! They don't want us to like them. Well, they do call having sex "being friendly" so it must be weird having older adults being electronically friendly at them all day.
Actually my response to Gen Z is 🖕
Ha! 👍🏾
Good choice you chose not to piss her off 😂🤪
So what does the middle finger mean?
This is the first time hearing that the thumbs up is considered derogatory in any way by any person or group. But, it is typical for the youngest generation to get all a-twitter over minor or mindless things until life hits them in the face, either a national crisis like a terror attack or personal crisis like a health issue. Then all that angst has more important places to go and the rest of us turn to them and say “Welcome to adulting”
In some European, African countries it's the same as flipping someone off. Just like in some European countries the "okay" hand gesture, index & thumb making an O, is an invitation to have sex. I have long time friends from Iran who told me the thumbs up is like giving the middle finger. In some cultures it's also an insult to grab someone's hand with your left hand. I know the reason why but do some research for yourself...
Oh, yes! Not only do they get all whiny about thumbs up - but look up how they feel about actually using punctuation in a text (apparently it's an abomination) or when you use an ellipsis to express yourself (or allow them to draw their own conclusions) . . . 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Holy s*** did you ever think about running for president❤
When I use the thumbs up, it means "I have seen your post and I am not entirely opposed to it. Now leave me alone."
I agree. As a person who has been raised by boomers I can agree with you about thumbs up emoji 100%. In my opinion generation z is over thinking this emoji if they all are thinking as this person is thinking.
Most young people overthink stuff because they have time to. Give 'em a few decades trying to pay a mortgage and raise kids and they'll chill out.
The funny thing is that as a Foundation Member of Gen-X, a thumbs up from us Gen-X kids would earn the wrath of the "Greatest Generation" and "Boomers" in the British Commonwealth as it could be considered either a rude gesture, or an acknowledgement and it was all within the gesture itself and us kids were never told which was good/bad. We had to work it out for ourselves, so we made it a good gesture and resolved that the middle finger would be the only finger to give offence.
Committees were *NOT* formed, we decided this like a hive mind where the good ideas ran from school yard to school yard with communication nodes the local watering hole where we gathered on our bikes and swam on hot days, the cafe or drive-in theatres. The ideas spread further afield with holidays away to meet new kids from other states, or when our Gen-X cousins who were actually Americans came home to visit with mum's sister who married the U.S. Marine when they met with him on R&R in Sydney.
We did not need the internet, as these grand ideas and plans would often as not originate simultaneously in different parts of the globe, or be spread by our music etc.
Ahh grand days of being bent out of shape over little things and then learning we had to suck it up, or change it to suit ourselves.
If Gen-Z think life is hard, imagine having your parents as Boomers, the generation that gave us "S3X Drvgs and Rock n' Roll and the S3xual Revolution then promptly told us Gen-X hatchlings "Don't do that"! But wait, there's more. We also had the Greatest Generation as our Grandparents and those suckers had turned two cities to GLASS before any of us were even conceived!
Ahh Gen-Z, you have a lot to learn about true angst!
Lol
I'm a Gen Xer, and my Mom and Dad are from the Silent Generation. My Dad was born in 1932, and my Mom was born in 1939. I know it's a common thing for Gen Xers to have Baby Boomer parents, but there are some exceptions. I guess it depends on whether you're an older Gen Xer, or a younger one.
@@kellyhughart9600 you're Mom falls into the very narrow "war babies" category (39-45) that no one ever uses anymore. Your Dad whilst The Greatest Generation was of the cohort that did things like Korea, South Vietnam and African Bush Wars. You are blessed with your parents. Thanks for sharing.
@@kellyhughart9600 Absolutely.
ILOVE YOU SLIM SHERRY.....YOU MAKE ME LAUGH AND THINK❤❤❤❤
The very fact that it bothers you is EXACTLY WHY I'm going to keep sending it. You earned it young'un. You earned it.
As a product of the year 1981 I can completely agree with that. She was more shocked by the 👍than most of us after the verdict of the O.J. Simpson trial.
Seriously your gonna get big mad about an 👍! Grow TF up 😂
“The rise of boy bands to fuel their fury” 😂😂😂 absolutely. Oh & 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I'm a 55 year old Gen X woman, and I agree with this! I don't hate anybody from Gen Z, or the Millennials, but I am so sick and tired of these people being offended by every little thing that those of us who are Gen Xers, say and do! Get over it, already! Some people nowadays can't sleep at night unless they have been offended by someone or something! That must be a really depressing way to live! There is a huge difference between giving someone a thumbs up, and flipping someone the finger! Look, none of us are perfect! Everybody has issues, including those of us who are Gen Xers! But we don't let ourselves get offended by every little thing! Why can't Gen Z and Milennials be more like this?
Omgoodness, I freaking love you❤😂 .... I miss the good ole days
😂😂😂😂😂 savage lol gen z is not ready for the generations before them
Nah….plenty of millennials and gen z send thumbs up. I think the Tik Tok girl speaks for herself.
I don't have a problem communicating with any generation, but I totally agree that I don't play passive aggressive. You will get the finger straight up. I don't play.
Well put.
And it says a lot about her & her ignorance more than it does about the meaning of an emoji when she whines like that.
Facts!! I'm Straightforward and some people don't like me and I Don't care
Grew up watching the Fonz on Happy Days. A thumbs up, a double thumbs up, has been part of our vocabulary a long time. Learned to use it first then graduated to the middle finger by middle school. Never looked back.
👍 or🖕 big difference
I love watching your videos. You articulate and encapsulate everything perfectly.
😂😂😂 please for the love of God make this conversation stop
FACTS!!!!!! 😄😄😄😄
Use the 👍 4 exactly same reason. To make the convo STOP!!✋️😂 It means "I got it, good to know or good job" No further action is required.
Well said 👍🏼
Not gonna lie.. for as long as I can remember my 'give a damn' never did.
The thumbs up is a positive sign. As in,”Good job.
I’m fine.
We’re happy with the situation.”
You know…👍
They don’t want others to be happy.
That’s why they are offended.
i'm gonna just say it: i couldn't give a fuck less how someone takes it, no matter what emoji i use. i'm not responsible for how they feel, that's their problem, i got more important shit to worry about.
Gen X - we're not afraid to actually say what we mean. We don't need (and won't use) polite work-arounds. 👍...
Couldn't have said this better myself LOL
Those under 40 must not know "The Fonz".
I had the biggest crush on Fonzie as a kid 😍
please. they dont know
"what is a woman?"
Aaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy
I remember the day of my parents telling me if you want something to cry about, then I will give you something to cry about
🤙🏻 I just give the Shaka.
Imma use it ALL tha time now!😂
Ìn my neck of the gen x woods, Atlantic Canada; we would have what we called a "PITY PARTY".
Someone would say, "Let's have a pity party... 1,2, 3..."
Then everyone else would respond, "Aawww, poor baby, were your widdle fweewings hurt?"
Yeah, you're not getting any sympathy from us, sweety pie.
Gen Z is always crying about something they can't grasp, especially when it is something easy to understand.
I will use wateva emoji I chose, always 👍. Response sent😂
Amen sister!!!!!😁
Lol I wonder what Gen Z's reaction to Michelle Tanner would be.
"You got it, dude!"
Gen Z translation: "F*** you, dude!"
That girl is just super angry,
Gen z doesn't even know what gender they are they think there's more than 2, and its a "spectrum"
I never used many emojis, but after I heard that the thumbs up was an insult, I started using it CONSTANTLY, usually punctuating the word 'ok'. I even use the real live thumbs up when in traffic in place of the middle finger. LOL!!
Boy, those younger kids need to grow up.😂 I can’t believe how easily offended they are.❤ Love what you had to say mama cause you’re right on the money❤❤❤
I'm an older GenX and my son is GenZ, he explained that GenZ uses the thumbs up to say "f-you", although other generations don't use the same way. Really no big deal.
I'm 41 and find Gen z as funny.
I agree with you on every thing ya said.
When we were young, 56 here, we understood to respect older generations and their ' ways'. And we knew one day we'd be old, if we were lucky, and would then have our ' ways' set in place.
Is this kid for real?!
Insert appropriate emjo here----.
The knight rider thums up👍
Okay, this little, boy, girl, she, him, it, they, Zee Zim Zay (go find a safe space)
Stop, trying to figure out Gen X,
Another word of advic, stop poking the bear. WE are Good and we have been Quiet 👍🏼
Omg I love you!!!😂❤
Don't ever group gen x with the boomers, ever.
Hahaha a few years ago, I cracked my middle finger in 3 places, the first & middle joints & in between those 2 joints. There was a possibility that I’d never be able to bend it again. My response “I’m from Jersey…no one will ever know the difference.” Yes I just prefer to actually give you the middle finger when I mean it…IRL or via emoji. I don’t want what I’m actually saying to get misconstrued. GenX is tired. We just say what we mean…no hidden meanings here!
Preach it Slim Sherri!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
You rocked that!!! 👍
Thank you soooo much for acknowledging the older millennials!! I’m 42, born in 82, and definitely identify more with Gen X than these New Age millennials. I know there’s a difference, but Lord it infuriates me when people lump all millennials together.
Well put! If that's all I ever had to worry about, I would be happy about life, how easy things go. I'll I can say is wow!
🤣🤣 This is so well said and hits all the points, but my favorite is the clarification that we are very direct and not afraid to use the🖕. If we meant “fuck you”, we’d have said, “fuck you”.
They get offended by EVERYTHING. It's so amusing. 👍👍👍
My phone finally has a button that shows up as a recommendation and is 'one touch' reply. Of course the middle finger is also a recommendation too because I use both a LOT.
So… for the younger crowd: does this mean that you all are flipping us Gen X folks off when you click thumbs up on FaceBook and CZcams?
I’m genuinely curious, now.
and if u ARE..... we dont care!
You are the BEST Slim Sherri!
I love your videos and I’m a boomer. Keep up the great work, 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How come they don’t have a middle finger emoji? Hell, that would cure this argument. 😂😂
They do. I found it.🖕(no insult intended). It's just way far down on the emoji list and not worth scrolling that far for it very often. I hardly ever see it used. So how gen z can justify their reasoning is beyond me. !!!!!! 👍
Girl. You are my favorite.
As a gen x, 👍 is like 'aloha.' It has several greetings: okay, cool, got it, go away, stfu, and leave me alone. It is our polite way of saying all of those. You won't like what comes next.
😂😂You are my hero!!!
This generation is addicted to outrage. 👍👍👍👍👍
I remember when my kids came home talking about hash tags… I started thinking Hash 😎, they are too young… as they drew me a pound sign, and I asked them what’s number do they want… No MoM it’s a HASH TAG! I laughed Uh huh. 🙂↔️
Wow. Yeah. What she said...
But know that we know...👍
They haven’t realized we don’t give a fuck how anyone feels about how we express ourselves. Feel free to go cry about our emoji usage, just do it somewhere else.
That was EPIC!!
ahahahaha...a thumbs up is rude?? oh no, believe me, you'd prefer the thumbs up instead of the litany of things crossing our minds...
I don’t have a busted give a damn….I was born without one 😂
THANK YOU!
I love this woman! Can't explain it any better. Try this kids. 1972 kindergarten 5yrs old, I had a hand drawn map of from my house & back home. I walked every day to school & home rain, snow or shine until 16. Then I drove. Also, can you newbies read or understand a map & how to use it?
We GEN X'ERS CAN 😅 👍👍👍👍🖕🖕🖕
So my son, a gen Z, does use 👍to "flip off" idiot drivers. Especially people he ends up passing who did not use their turn signals 😄
I ❤it!
Boomer chiming in here. I'm gonna have to reread texts from some of my grandkids if that's what they use thumbs up for. Gonna give me a whole new meaning from their texts. I thinks a few might be getting an ass kicking! 👍
I know I'm late to the party, but I am 40, and I'm with Sherri.
If I'm gonna flip you off, expect a middle finger, hell even both if you done enough to deserve them both.
The folks who think like this girl, must have so much good and easy in their lives, they have to dig up stuff to be mad about.
This whole thumbs up emoji thing is So, SO lame
I’d like to know what’s wrong with her eyesight if she’s mistakes thumbs up 👍 for the middle finger 🖕 😂😂😂😂. If I want to use 👍 then I will, cause I know what it means and Sherri you perfectly stated it. Well said 👍
I believe she is jealous that we X's are so much smarter and cooler! 👍
I mean now that I know it bugs them, I’m definitely using it more.
I am perfectly capable of using the middle finger emoji, if I mean that, I’ll use that. Lol!
I think I understand where she's coming from. GenZ take a "thumbs up" as the a "FU" because their used to blowing each other off with it, when they don't feel like making a real response. Well, all I can say to that is: 👍 😅 Maybe if GenZ want a better response, perhaps they should say something worth responding to, with other than 👍 Just saying.
Wow. Thumbs up/down has been commonly in use in the US since WWII . It's one of those "let me communicate with as few words as possible" things because I'm in a hurry and don't have time to talk.
Gen Z needs help if they think that's the same as a middle finger. The rudest interpretation is "Okay, I'm done talking." Though generally the "done talking" is implied as we're doing something else.
Next thing you know, they're going to lose the ability to distinguish head nods and head shakes.
Edit: Also "We depict the thumbs up as an Fyou." So use the middle finger in place of the thumbs up? I should be flipping off anyone under the age of 30? That seems incorrect.
Gen-X thinks a thumbs up is a middle finger? LOL. Uh, no.
How can a generation weened on social media where every "like" button has the thumbs up icon not know what it means? 👍
You missed the point
Nope. Gen-X knows what "thumbs up" means. It's the Gen-Z through the rest of the younger generations, according to the "accident with multiple staplers" young woman, who are unsure about it. She needed to vent her (?) angst and that was the subject she chose.
We know that 👍is just short hand for "Acknowledged", fine, great, whatever.
Well said, as always, RSS. Two thumbs up. Real ones.
