  • OPEN TO FIND RESOURCES AND LINKS! Rotary tools! Pendant motors! Whoch one to choose?? Many of you asked me this question, so today I will try to help you make your decision. I will talk about two flex shaft pendant motors that I had a chance to use and I will share my opinion about each one. Dremel is a budget option and Foredom is more advanced one, that require a bit of investment. They are both great, and offer different perks. Watch the video to find out the details and my opinion!

Just wanted to say, for anyone who is interested, that there are foot pedals that can be connected to any rotary tool. Personally, I have the very same Dremel with the flex shaft, and I just bought a pedal and connected them. The foot control was really a game changer :)

The question I have that I haven’t been able to find an answer to yet between CZcams videos and online articles etc.. so the question is: if you invest in the flex shaft rotary tool do you also need to invest in all the hand files, and emery sticks etc? I realize this video is 3 years old by now so I hope you still get this comment. But if not and if anyone else in the comments sees my question, please answer 🙏🏼

Thanks for a good video. I went with a hybrid approach and purchased a Eurotools motor with a flex shaft that had the same head as your original from Foredom. The whole unit was $150 cdn. So far it has been great. The pedal is a little high so an upgrade there may be in the future. I’m not sure how the motor torque is compared to the Foredom. I haven’t had any problems with it stopping under working pressure. I also have the dremel 3000 set up as a dedicated jump ring saw. The issue with the dremel is that it can stall during the cutting process. This may equate to a short life for the dremel motor at which point I’ll buy another head for my flex shaft with a dedicated blade setup for jump ring cutting. Cheers!

I'm not a jeweler, but I use rotary tools. My daily driver is a Foredom TX and I also own several other pendant motors and handheld machines. My advice to someone starting out is to buy an inexpensive pendant motor and not a handheld tool. The difference in torque is not subtle and you'll find that your work goes quicker as a result. As a rough rule of thumb, the higher the (max) rotational speed the lower the torque of the tool. FWIW, every budget pendant motor that I have originally came with a poorly performing pedal. A Foredom pedal is a significant upgrade and it's affordable. Good luck.

Hiya Lady Stardust, another great video, thank you. I think you've said everything there is to say, I will be upgrading to Foredom soon, on the safety aspect only it makes total sense, killing the rotation with your foot control? Total sense. Changing speed with just your foot control? Total sense, again. Yes I want a bench polisher but for now the flex shaft works & the Foredom will only do it better. So my mind is already made up & I just need to save enough for the switch. Your video has helped remind me why I want to upgrade & the mane reasons are safety & convienence. Thank you again dear lady, take care & stay safe... Steve x...

    • @felixf5211
      @felixf5211 Před 3 lety +1

You may want to opt for the metal pedal. It's a few bucks more, and offers noticeably more control especially when trying to maintain a given rotational speed. And it's nicer to use, doesn't slide around. An all-around upgrade. Foredom's plastic pedal is very good, but the metal one is better. I have both. Good luck.

Hi Basia. Well my hand held rotary tool by Guild has died, again after barely any use same as the first one! It basically cut a hole in the top of a lid (making a mini saw bench to cut rough stone before tumbling - idea from a utube video - and uses the flex shaft - didn’t even get that far!). I was altering some bead storage boxes by removing the lip on Elizabeth ward bead boxes as it just gets in the way. Hubby had the idea of just using the flex tool to remove them. Perfect. Or so I thought! I have a socket with a length of wire and a foot switch on, you plug into the wall then you plug your tool into, gives me a on off for any tool! Anyway I got 3 little boxes done, the motor stopped, started again and got 1 done, speed was varying on its own, next one and dead! Again! So fed up with these tools. I’m now going to get a pendant flex shaft as I’ve now wasted over £60 on 2 useless tools whcih never got their moneys worth doing just basic tasks and barely any at that. The first one was hubby’s he got for refurbishing golf clubs did barely anything and died! So I’m not wanting more op money on another had held one, I’ve seen online and utube that some have had their pendant motors for years! I knew where to search, and went to your utube to take a look! I have a couple of questions. Maybe you can help
    1) did you go for a 4mm or a 6mm flex shaft?
    2) what chuck size did you go for?
    3) have you been able to use the bits you had before with the pendant motor?
    4) how easy is it to change the “handle” on the flex shaft? I plan to get 2, 1 with be quick change the other basic one I will wrap with space fill rubber tape to make it fit my vice for using with the “mini saw bench” but to then hold on the hand isn’t so easy! So I hope to be able to change them for the differing uses.
    5) on my flex shaft I have a quick change keyless chuck, can you use them on your pendant flex tool or is the quick handle you have better?
    6) you have the SR motor, that’s the one with forward and reverse, is there a benefit to having the reverse as well as the forwards motion.
Thank you in advance, I hope you can help.
Thanks ❤ love your videos they Are great to follow to learn or just watch your process and see a piece coming together.😊❤

The H20-like Chinese handpiece they sell for $42 can be had from Aliexpress for less than $15. Same goes for other handpieces; much more affordable. The shaft on this machine is slightly smaller than Foredom's. The Chinese handpieces fit it perfectly, as they were made for it. BTW, you're not going to believe the pricing on 2.35mm accessories, abrasives, bristle discs, and other attachments!

I got it from Ikea! :) But it was years ago...I just checked, and they still have this model (FORSA) in Polish Ikea, but it looks like the green colour is no longer available

I bought a chinese copy of foredom pendant motor for 85$ and it's a very very good motor ! (In addition, they sent me spare parts for the motor). A french youtuber like you, who talk about making jewelry, have the same motor than mine, a chinese copy, since 4 years ! So don't be afraid, it's not a low-quality motor, the big different between foredom and chinese copy is the pay of the worker .... I don't encourage it but I didn't have the money for a real foredom motor.

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing . . . and, of course, the line of work I am referring to is a musician (well what did YOU think I was referring to?)
And yes indeed it's true, I've spent thousands of hours, working my fingers to the bone, getting to grips with those huge pipe organs (you know the type I'm sure) and let me tell you, when you pull-out all the stops on those things, they can blow a grand crescendo, much like a fire-man's hose let go, and if you're not careful, it can go in your eyes, and that stings.
And to relax (maybe like you) I like to blow a little horn now and then.
What size saxophone do you prefer?

I think so, since it's a rotary tool and if you use proper attachments, you should be able to do that. But please, do a research, as I'm not completely sure and I think there may be more to this than that. Be safe while working with these tools and drilling
