  • Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival known as the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’, is officially celebrated on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday every year. The Carnival festivities start just after Christmas and continue until Ash Wednesday, with dozens of high energy parties and premier cultural competitions. From its diverse people and culture to its amazing biodiversity, Trinidad and Tobago ‘break the mould’ of the typical Caribbean destination and boasts a year-long calendar of cultural events and festivals, friendly, multi-ethnic people and amazing adventure.
This event is well known for participants' colorful costumes and exuberant celebrations. There are numerous cultural events such as "band launch fetes" running in the lead up to the street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It is said that if the islanders are not celebrating it, then they are preparing for it, while reminiscing about the past year's festival. Traditionally, the festival is associated with calypso music, with its origins formulated in the midst of hardship for enslaved West and Central Africans; however, recently Soca music has replaced calypso as the most celebrated type of music. Costumes (sometimes called "mas"), stick-fighting and limbo competitions are also important components of the festival.

The first was Giselle LaRonde in 1986. T&T also has the first black woman to win the Miss Universe competition and her name is Janelle 'Penny' Commissiong and she won in 1977.

By 1998, I have lost interest in beauty pageant, and didn't know the winners; also, there were apparently many of them by then instead of Miss World and Miss Universe that existed in the 1960s and 70s.

Great African Tigress... Thanks for your commentaries. They are really very informative, even for me. The largest Carnival outside of the Caribbean is the Toronto Caribana, which I have attended sporadically the last 35 years, always as a spectator. Never knew their costumes could be this pricey - $1000 for most basic ladies costumes and $200-$600 for backpacks...
Covid-induced world inflations of the last few years could have contributed too. Now, I will show more respect to carnival participants, because they must be very comfortable people. Wearing masks in Canivals is definitely not for the poor.😃

Thanks for the video. You did a good job with the narrative. As a Trinidadian, could we get the names of the bands as they past, if you do this again, otherwise sometimes it looks like one big band. We would like to know whose band it is because we know who the band leaders are. Next time to really see some elaborate costumes, see if you could get to the Socadrome early in the morning to capture some of the larger bands with nicer costumes instead of the simple dress down costumes at the Savannah. You can come to the Savannah after. A lot of the big costumed bands don't come here. You can arrange for a car to past the back streets, up in St. Clair to get you to the Savannah after the Socadrome. You will notice the big difference in some of the costumes. I wish they could go back to the old time costumes when it was worth seeing the bands. Some of these bands should not be allowed to dress as if it was Monday.

Brasil's carnival is amazing. It is not a competition between Trinidad and Tobago and Brasil. Our carnival is unique. multilayered and magical and there are over 100 Trini style carnivals worldwide. This is the truth, but it does not make Brasil's carnival any better or worse. Brasil still has a beautiful carnival. Let's celebrate each other.

The French were not colonisers ; they were the aristocratic planters brought in by the Spanish colonisers to open up plantations in Trinidad. The French were the ones who started carnival celebrations which were copied by the African slaves and from there carnival in Trinidad developed into what it is today.

A real carnival? Do you know what the word "carnival" means? It means giving way to the flesh before Lent. Accordingly, one is free to interpret it in any way one chooses. The most recent history of carnival as we know it is based on post- Christopher Columbus New World discovery (under the aegis of the king and queen Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, the defenders of Roman Catholicism) and is as follows:
Carnival is a pre-Lenten, festival. Therefore, one has the freedom to unrestricted abandonment prior to 40 days of Christian penance, before Easter (the Resurrection). So, this T&T "disorganization" is more relevant and pertinent to what carnival really means or represents. There's no need for "organization and professionalism."
It's unfair to compare (a small island--1.4 million population) Trinidad & Tobago's carnival to Brazil's (with a huge population +215.3 million). One should allow each its own cultural interpretation. Brazil's carnival comes with scanty costumery under Samba schools and more regimentation. For Trinidad & Tobago, it's a freedom to dance, prance, act or behave however one chooses (within the laws of the country). Anyone (visitors and all) can play in any band of one's choosing. It is more about freedom and happy abandonment.
Ironically, in earlier times, Trinidad and Tobago's carnival costumes were more historical, dignified, creative, and orderly until T&T began emulating Brazil's scanty thong bikinis, feathers and beads, evolving into what one is now witnessing. That's the absurdity of the criticism. One is praising and commending Brazil. Actually, it's Brazil's scanty costumery that has influenced (and continues to influence) the decadence witnessed in T&T scanty costumery (or lack of clothing) today.
One is free to criticize; however, before one does, one should study the root of the word "carnival." It's open to interpretation, and this is how people of T&T have chosen to interpret it. One is attempting to insult or denigrate another culture's freedom of expression, and that is what is shameful.

The "mother of all carnivals" ?? You mean something that loosely dates back to the middle ages long before Trinidad and Tobago existed?
Oh yeah thats a convenient marketing slogan Trinis decided to invent out of thin air

The "mother of" something does not necessarily mean giving birth to it. Rather, it often connotes something being the best in it's class.

Lol the FRENCH plantation owners started this tradition in Trinidad. Even the word Carnival and Mas as in masquerade is French. No one said the CONCEPT of carnival started in Trinidad. The "mother" doesn't mean the start or origin. Try to be a little more literate and expand your vocabulary before speaking critically. Obtain comprehension.

AT I think your costume prices are a bit off..the thousands youre mentioning is the cost in TTD not USD..every Trini guy knows its about 6K TTD for his lady to play in a top band and less for him thankfully lol . 10K TT is the budget for a couple in a top band.

      @Trinavara Před 6 měsíci +3

Nope check it over its TTD, the USD is in brackets . Frontline and Backline are just over $1000 USD maximum around $1000 US is the par price for all top band front and back lines and men are cheaper, ...like $700 USD.
As a Trini guy you know it's about $6000TTD for your lady to play in a top band
The larger back pack upgrades are 2- 300 USD additional ..
Anything for that 3000 USD you're talking about must be an individual/special costume...even a fully optioned one with large backpack etc comes in less than 2000USD .
You could just edit in a correction in the vid *TTD..wouldn't wanna discourage future prospects..

@@Trinavara Thanks for the clarification. However, I checked the Lost Tribe website just now and found the figures to be between yours and @AFRICANTIGRESS. Most of of the basic women carnival costumes are priced at approx US$1000, and male versions at approx $900. The backpacks are approx $200, $400 and $600 for regular, medium and big.

We saw a few f those there, with varying messages. I guess I could collar a few friends together and register to parade. However, I think most tourists who go to Trini would prefer to be part of an established band, hence the need to fork out the US$1000 for the all inclusive basic costume. I think it is worth it to pay the $1000 for the Trini carnival experience for those travelling in from all over the world.
