    Have saved a good 30 pepper plants from last year to grow on in 2022. Should have a much better start than last year when I lost pretty much all of them in the greenhouse. I didn't bring them in as they had bugs/thrips on them, only one survived an orange bell plant. Great tips :)

    Would this process also work for sweet red and green bell pepper plants?

    What night time temperature do you bring the plants in in autumn/fall and what night time temperature do you take the out in spring?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  Před 5 lety

      Spring I wait for night time temps to be above 55, typically a week or two after my last expected frost. In the autumn they will be a little more hardy, I’d bring them in when it starts to dip below 45. Just make sure they don’t get hit by frost! :)

      @@OrganicBackyardGardening We are down to 48 deg F some nights here in Melbourne Australia and I have a pot full of red and green peppers. Usually I cut them right back and leave on a covered patio for winter, where eventually there is just a bare stick. It finally gets going again, growing leaves etc, in January (mid summer), but I will try your method this time and see if I can get some spring peppers. Thanks.

    Can I overwinter a pepper plant after taking a frost? Thanks!

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  Před 5 lety

      Hi Mio! Thanks for stopping by - it really depends how bad the plant has been damaged by the frost. Initially, area damaged by frost will appear wilted. Then the wilted growth will turn brown or black and eventually become crispy. This means these affected parts of the plant have died. If you have unaffected portions of the plant you may still be able to overwinter. Feel free to send me a photo via instagram instagram.com/organicbackyardgardening/ and I’ll take a look!

    1:18 wait... should that be reversed? Perlite for aeration and vermiculite for moisture/nutrient retention

    Is there any way to grow organic vegetables without using store bought things like permite and vermiculite. In the old days all they had were the seeds and they must have used other methods that don't require dependence on commercial products. I can't find any videos that don't cheat using commercially packaged products to help them to grow. All help appreciated.

      Yes! I only use compost in my garden. Home made compost with organic mulch. In this scenario for making a potting soil you could use organic compost, sand, and wood chips/saw dust.

    You have it backwards. Perlite adds air and verm retains moisture. Thank you for the video, but you didn't really tell us how to overwinter. More details on the trimming and watering would be appreciated. Thanks anyway

      Hi Milkey Gee, thanks for point that mix up in the video and the feedback. As far as trimming back, cut the plant back to a few main Y’s and leave a few inches in the upper part of the Y’s. In the spring the plant will regrow new branches. If you don’t trim the plant will regrow new branches on the tips of existing branches making tips of the branches really flop over when fruit sets. For watering I’d recommend not letting the soil dry out, the frequency will depend on your soil mix. A soil moisture meter is helpful. Last winter I watered mine once a week, however it was a fairly large pot (about 4 gal). Thanks Tim
