  • Wondered how well a 1/2in 800 ft lbs air impact wrench would drive screws into a 2x4. I compared it to an impact driver. It sinks them in like it’s going through butter.

How are you attaching the bit to your square drive? Is this a store bought adaptor?
I have used sockets on both impact drivers & impact wrenches to drive hex head lag screws. The wrench was impressive, but the screws were so weak that i was better off with the driver. Would snap the heads off even with the driver. I swear grade 5 used to be stronger.

I was using a smaller socket that accepted the bit. I normally just use my impact driver, but tested this out for fun.

@@homehackshowtos thats what i thought. Ive done that many times through the years. Can be very fast, but is clumsy & the socket & bit take a beating.
Originally started using this trick to run zip screws with a butterfly impact. Then got the idea of driving phillips heads this way. A big improvement over using a drill motor, but then impact drivers came along & made all that almost irrelevant.
Somebody(i dont remember who) makes a drill chuck with a square drive stem, so that you can drill with an impact wrench. The impact drivers have made this obsolete also, but its still a neat idea. I wish id bought one back in the day.

depends what you need for, if on a site or move about a lot cordless might be better but if in a workshop air might work, glad I saw this as air tools if forget compressor are cheaper and last longer and was trying to find an air impact driver, yet to use air tools but going to get every tool I know I will use in future, not getting a kit as buying each one alone and looking for muffled when can

I use a 18v impact for wood working. I use my air impact tools for auto work or when I’ve needed to drive bolts into concrete etc.

You need cordless in a wood shop. Air is not going to be used in reality. Most construction screws nowadays are self tapping. They have far stronger cordless impacts than Rigid. Air impacts are slowly phasing out because cordless is becoming to strong. Anyone who wants to argue this just look at the Milwaukee 1 inch cordless impact. It pulled a seized yolk nut off the back of a 18 wheelers transmission. I’ve had to heat them up with torches numerous times and barely got them off with a 3/4 inch air gun. A lot of times 1 inch air is needed. Using a air impact to drive would screws will slow you down over all due to hose and bulky gun. A good Makita or Milwaukee will hit way harder than the Rigids. All you got to do is look up test reviews on CZcams.
