  • Designer Karen Cole brings warmth, light and style to a family kitchen with modern stone finishes and pops of wood and brass. Learn how she created a functional and elegant space by removing barriers and dividing the kitchen into zones, including a sit-in TV area and workspace.
    Karen removed a block of cabinets that closed off the space and replaced it with convenient built-in storage. She relied on a mix of elements, from wood to marble and even faux concrete wallpaper, to bring in the warmth it desperately needed. The sitting and TV area is made up of a cosy rug with two chairs and tall steel doors with white linen curtains that shine light into the space. A zone that doubles as a breakfast area and workspace is set off to the side. Heated stone flooring is used throughout. The result is an elegant and modern kitchen that’s functional for a busy family.

    idk why so many people are hating on this transformation. for one thing she gave the clients numerous options and they chose their favorite. so if they're happy with it, that's all that matters. second of all, this (layout) is incredibly unique and very cutting edge. but apparently some people can't handle anything beyond the norm. on that note, just because it's different that doesn't mean it's bad. I for one love the "concrete" walls, the black + white flooring and the coffee bar area with all of the storage jars and fun artwork. as a whole I think the space is fabulous. very well done. 👍

    Finally a design on this channel that is funky and eclectic! The fact that this design is so polarizing with people either hating it or loving it speaks to its genius.

    This woman & her team are geniuses. Of course there are aspects I would tweak for my taste, but overall the room is incredible. I can't believe that concrete wallpaper, the bronze detailing, the ballsy but beautiful floor, the patio doors, the open but separate-feeling areas. Well done !

    I'm just wondering why there is no range hood installed or any form exhaust for the food that is to be cooked. Was this space supposed to double as a living room? The layout of the area adjacent to the kitchen resembles a living room more than a place to eat.

    I like the kitchen by I hate when designers use a bunch of random chairs and the breakfast seems like it has no point when there is seating at the island and a desk that pulls out

  • @ASIT7TR
    @ASIT7TR Před 9 lety +21

    There are alot of beautiful elements in this kitchen make over, texture that i love, but for some reason, the overall look little bit strange (i can not put my finger on it what tho)... if i am the owner of that home, i feel i wont be comfortable enough to stay in that space for long period of time....

    • @Velgaxxx
      @Velgaxxx Před 9 lety +1

      AS 7TR i think it's the cooking island place which makes it look strange.

    • @britjessica
      @britjessica Před 9 lety +1

      AS 7TR My thoughts exactly...maybe it's the concrete-look wallpaper...or maybe the floor tile pattern?

    • @ASIT7TR
      @ASIT7TR Před 9 lety +1

      britjessica TheVelgaxxx I agree with you both.. could be all of those things... As professional Interior designer, i find the overall looks in this make over are "cold" and not comfortable to be in for long period of time.... The fact that there is no proper dining table in that space, also makes less "homey".. Although there is a breakfast area which facing the window, i think people will use the seating infront of the island more ( and interact with whoever cooking).. I dont dislike those pendant lights, but the "UFO or hula hoop shape" only added the "coldness" in that space...Ah well, Im sure her client (s) happy with the result, and enjoying the finish result (I hope)... To me, good design is more than just good to show it off but more importantly is all about "living in a space that grounds us.."

    • @Velgaxxx
      @Velgaxxx Před 9 lety +3

      AS 7TR exactly, "cold" this is how the room looks and what makes it look strange and uninviting.

    Frying a chicken or making gravy that needs to cook for 2 hours in that kitchen? The chairs will become oily in 2 weeks. But the design is very nice except the gray chairs which u called them espresso zone

    She wanted to create warmth, but to me it looks very "cold" to be honest. Especially the kitchen part. Even the walnut doesn't seem to give any form off warmth to the place. The only thing I liked was the seating area with the mid century furniture. But there also is not a feeling of "warmth" just functionality. Mabel it's the lack of texture or the total lack of color, I don't know, but something is definitely missing. For me that is. I hope the owner likes it!

  • @JudgeyJudgeyable

    That desk in the sitting area seems random and unnecessary. Who would actually work there?

  • @Brien84
    @Brien84 Před 4 lety

    This is so sloppy. It has a lot of great ideas but for like three different kitchens. I think it could have salvaged if the cabinets were the same color and if they chose sole larger furniture instead of a bunch of little things. It feels very cluttered.

    why are there no non-canadian interior design youtube shows? this is so boring. canada is boring and un-original

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Před 7 lety +1

      Well, find one and upload it! Or make one. Though FWIW not everyone wants to actually live in an 'interesting and original' house every day.

    • @Nouvellecosse
      @Nouvellecosse Před 6 lety

      1) People who are creative and original don't need someone to style their house for them; they do it themselves. and interior designers use well established techniques to make houses look nice, clean, and inoffensive, not bold or innovative.
      2) If there are no non-Canadian interior design shows on CZcams, what makes you think they'd be more original and creative? And if Canadian designers did actually turn out to be less "original" what would that one small industry have to do with the rest of the country's originality?
      Just an excuse to be ignorant and insult someone's nationality.
