I had always avoided the use of a mirror sighting compass because of the effects of parallax when sigting with one eye open and the other closed. But keeping both eyes open I can't really see the target well enough. In your video, the bit about lining up the sighting line with the pivot point was what I had been missing. Now I'm headed out today to give my sighting compass another chance :)

I have a suunto mc2 usgs model. What are the scales on the side of the cover for?
They look to be contour line spacing for various slope angles.
