EMG or accelerometer? What is the best choice?

    EMG measures muscle activity which corresponds roughly to force. From physics we know what F=ma meaning that force is proportional to acceleration. An alternative to EMG is thus acceleration which is presented here. The accelerometer used is an ADXL103CE by analog devices which is one of the most sensitive ones on the market and requires only two external components . While the EMG is slightly noisy the accelerometer provides a virtually noise-free signal allowing to measure very small finger movements and even muscle tremor.
    Note that there is some crosstalk between the two channels because the accelerometer impacts slightly on the EMG baseline which shows up as a DC. EMG is essentially DC free and shows up as more or less white noise. This shows again that it is important to interpret the signals properly to be able to distinguish between crosstalk, noise and signal.

    Why not change the position of electrodes, I have seen videos where people used multiple electrodes at different places and differentiate individual finger movements,..
    Is it possible? If so can you share any documents on placing these electrodes properly...

    Can an EMG help pick up partial paralysis? As I have bulging discs in my spinal cord causing partial paralysis. But this has also caused my body to constantly buzz. i.e. I put my teeth close together and they chatter like you are cold, which tells me this trauma is also causing electrical activity to travel throughout my body while I'm at rest, even above where I have bulging discs going into my spinal cord.
    Which leads me to believe the bulging discs are sending some kind of message up to my brain where my brain responds by giving me constant tremors. As the tremors started right before I started slowly going paralyzed years ago from a disc herniation.
    No one takes it seriously, but got my doctor to order an EMG test since I've never had that done and my tremors are too small to usually be seen by the naked eye. Only a few times has my tremors been great enough to where a person could see my body shaking.

    Which sensor (model no, MPU6050 or different) can be used as an accelerometer sensor for this activity?

    Really Informative ..,is there any EMG machine ( brand) that comes with accelerometer?

      See the channel videos how to make your own. There is also a ready made one which is called Attys (www.attys.tech) but in this clip that's the one made according to the instructions on this channel. www.biosignals.org.uk/

    Hey, thanks for this useful informations, I just have a question about EMG does it depend on the nerves in any way or just on muscles

    • @BPMbiosignals
      @BPMbiosignals  Před 5 lety +2

      The EMG itself just comes from the muscles. The nerves generate also a potential but that's too small to reach the surface.

    What if you have a stroke patient and he is paralyzed, say if the muscle voltage is not enough to cause contraction but could be picked up for diagnostics can we pick up and sifferentiate the signal then?

    • @BPMbiosignals
      @BPMbiosignals  Před 3 lety

      If there is some remaining EMG that could be used to control something. However, stimulating the same muscle will be tricky as one needs approx 50 to 100Volt to stimulate a muscle and would make it hard to record EMG but def could be used to control a screen or a prosthetic device.
