great cast, great song- they do sound a bit breathless at the start though but wow its soooo gooooood! Especially in the theatre- wow. Its funny, but even though Ben is in a cast of energetic dancers he STILL stands out- i just thought the Josephs were lazy but he really does have star quality.

In the original production, Motormouth wears a blonde afro wig in "You Can't Stop the Beat" I know people have said this but it's quite impossible to compare original musical and the movie musical. For instance in the movie, they weren't recorded singing AND dancing, just singing in a studio ... and this Penny blows Amanda out of the water vocal-wise. Actually all of the Penny's I've seen on Broadway and on tour do. This cast is amazing though!
I saw Hairspray in seattle when it was in previews and loved it. The london cast is the best. It is better than Broadway and don't even mention the movie. The movie was not good.
Edna's voice here reminds me more of Paul Vogt from MADtv, who actually did play Edna in the Broadway version 2007. He didn't sing as well as Michael though.
I probably preferred the film, but I reckon really I should the musical live before judgeing. Anyway, who can deny the value of a cast with Micheal Ball and Ben Ellis?
@angelfishlover I'm currently playing Edna for an amateur production of this show and I'll tell you, ITS SOO difficult, especially for a heavy foot straight man who's NEVER done drag before, dancing in those heels is probably one of the great challenges of my life.
I totally agree twingle, the live show is much better, they sound quite out of breath in this! Maybe it was the nerves or something! But it's still FAB! I love Hairspray!!!
