    It's always interesting to hear your thoughts on equipment and as you rightly pointed out Tom our needs change over time for various reasons. I liked what you said about the wind speed and the sensations and impressions you get from inside a tent compared to the actual windspeed outside. At the end of the day we all have our personal preferences and reasons why we reach our own conclusions but it's great to keep an open mind and listen to others. Great video ATB.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před rokem

      Hi Alan great to hear from you and I hope that you are well.. Yeah all tents get noisy above a certain threshold of wind speed but it can be different for some tents over others. As I said in the Jannu the wind definitely feels and sounds significantly less than the same speed of wind in the Nammatj.. I only noticed this when the two tents were pitched side by side in a 40mph steady wind... I do always keep an open mind and continue to watch other videos and do further field testing myself.. All the very best wishes... Tom

    Wow!!! - I wasn't expecting the BRS to top the list. Really very surprised. I've had one for a few months but haven't given it a decent run yet. It is so small it's freaky. I'll give it a proper crack.
    Also, a big thanks. I've read/watched vids about the Big Agnes before and wondered about maybe getting one but where I live I couldn't get my hands on one to test. Mat comfort is huge to me and I'll carry the extra weight if needs be. I've a decent Thermarest NeoAir model but prefer my heavier wide Exped Synmat because of it's insane comfort - best sleep I've ever had. However inflation is via a hand pump method which is just truly awful in the field. Had already decided to replace but was scratching my head as I find the number of types and models of mats just does my head in. But now I know exactly what to get as you've confirmed my earlier thoughts. I'll order online tomorrow. Thanks.
    As for the Ledlenser - by god that ought to be a very decent headtorch for the price!
    Thanks for the video Tom. As always, excellent, concise (unlike me) and considered.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi David, my favourite list has now probably changed.... Always new gear coming out... The BRS is still top as it's so special for what it is and has the features I need on 90 percent of my camping trips.. NiteCore and Ledlenser both have new Headlamps to challenge this one here as technology in lighting moves quite fast....For comfort though not sure that Big Agnes can be beaten at the moment although Kilos gear is sending me one to review soon.. Best wishes and once again thank you for the super thanks and support for my channel... Tom

    Hi Tom. Great to see you back out and with another quality video. Can’t disagree with you on the mighty BRS and the Jannu 💪. I’ve not taken any other stove for any season since I bought the BRS. Sleeping pads is the most tricky category for me. I really would struggle to give a winner out of my 3; the uberlight, the xtherm and the rapide sl. All are exceptional at different things, weight, warmth and comfort respectively. There must be 1 out there that is the perfect compromise of all 3 🤔. Cheers. Gary

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před rokem

      Hey Gary great to hear from you and your thoughts 🤔.. We have had a few gear discussions and if it wasn't for yourself I would never even have tried the BRS.. Yes sleeping pads are the hardest to pick a winner . Even the insane comfort of the Big Agnes is almost flawed by it's weight compared to the 300g uberlite.. If it wouldn't have been for the durability issues we both had them the results here may have been very different... All the very best wishes and thank you for your absolutely top class kit recommendations... Tom

    Enjoyed the comparisons of various kit, I must say The North Face Westwind Tent would of been my favourite it served extremely well Ski Touring and Scottish winter climbing in more remote crags. It's a pity they do not make anymore, if they did they could join Flysheet to Inner and leave room to put poles into inner to get a taut Fly pitch first. Same thoughts as Mr MCM. Looking forward to Sleeping Bag reviews. Appreciated.

    Nice to have the gear you are happy with (for now!) 😊 Good luck with your sleeping bag research should you go there! I’ve just replaced my Rab Neutrino 400 that I’ve used a hell of a lot over the last 8 years as it lost a bit of down during that time. I didn’t even bother looking at anything else - I was a very happy customer the first time round so just went for the same option for my 3 season camping…call me lazy or maybe just not that bothered to explore 🙃

    All good solid pieces of gear I've got a few of them but with the stove I swapped the brs for the soto it fits in my 750 pot but it's tight and I swapped to the tri flex.i have the uberlite I don't have a problem with the noise but I did go to the large the extra width made so much difference for me.i know you love your winter camping so do I but the janu is just 2 much for 3 season so I use the niak for that and kuiu for winter with the extherm.but everyone as different things they want from there kit and different seasons but it's great to see what other people like

    Very cool setup, I love my BA Rapide wide/large! Works very well with my Ice Flame quilt also large, was super comfy on my 3 day solo hike last time. I switched to X-Mid 1 Solid and also like it alot so im selling my other tipi tents.
    I got your backpack from 3F UL green one and tested it, was ok but its was not as comfortable and useful as my Exos 58, 1.3kg but well worth extra weight! I also have BRS but not tested yet as I also like my Speedster alcohol stove, but alot of people seem to use x-boil so maybe later in the future.
    Anyway, for winter camping your set is top notch, mine is for long distance walks, not UL but love it so far.
    I am considering buying big double BA Rapide family pad and not sure about the tent for 3 of us but maybe Copper Spur 3 its light and seems well made overall.
    All the best!

      Hey Gregory great to hear from you and your thoughts 💭.. You have a great selection of kit and the comfort of the Osprey is interesting.. Sorry to hear the 3FUL pack didn't work out but pitching mine against the granite gear it really did well.. As I have got older and make the personal choices of a heavy tent and comfortable sleeping pad then I got to cut the grammes in other ways.. Just over a year ago I was on about 12kg pack weight.. Now I am close to 7 including a 3kg tent..I am sure that Big Agnes double would be very comfortable.. Thank you for sharing your kit selection and use once again... Tom

    Nice video Tom. I love my Mountain 25, although I opted for the US version as it was seam sealed as opposed to that European version which wasn't?! Only thing I would love to see different it pitch as one, then again I guess the conditions it's designed for doesn't really see anything other than snow which doesn't melt. Like you, it's kind of relegated now and I use it for the odd campsite trip when the weather is bad, but once it's pitched - it's like a limpet. Atb, Chris

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před rokem

      Hey Chris thank you for watching and sharing your experience and thoughts 🤔.. Yes my mountain 25 was also the US version.. I have sold it on now as it was too heavy and a bit tired to put it under seriously heavy weather.. Yes I totally agree with the pitching particularly for UK but as you say for dry snow conditions then no worries at all.. I was previously always comparing my Nammatj to the MTN 25 which was a bit unfair as the geodesic pole set up and smaller panel size made it much quieter in high winds.. All the very best wishes Tom

    Funny how there's one tent (like your Akto) you never get rid of - with me it's my Hexpeak V4A - even though we're generally using other models now. Always admired that Jannu from afar, totally serious allweather expedition tent which I'd buy without hesitation if I had a need for that level of performance (not gonna happen!).

Berghaus also made some awesome British, Belgian and Dutch military packs. Pick the cammo you like best and go for it. Usually around $100 vs $500-600 for equivalent fjallraven packs

    I've really enjoyed your videos. I'm currently in the market for a bomber 4 season tent for backcountry skiing in New Zealand. I liked your reviews of the Samaya tents but I'm not sure if they would handle a massive hit of wind. The Jannu looks great if you want more space than the Soulo. Very interesting point in the wind noise for the different tent shapes, i suppose the lower one should be undenaible better, you only pay in headroom space, that hillaberg tent is sick!
    I have a variaty of good tents (sierra convert, mh trango, and some Marmot UL) and i hate that non of them have the external poles montage, such an underrated feature. Guess is time to start saving for hillaberg.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes while some manufactures claim that inner first is stronger I really dont think that to is after extensively using both.. the fact that you can attach the guy lines directly to the poles makes a big difference and inner first tents are very vulnerable in windy conditions until you have the fly attached and guyed out... Simplicity of pitching is better too with external pole sleeves.... best wishes Tom

    Tom, have been thinking of you. Hadn't seen much of late. Great to catch up with you. I agree with your assessments of gear. I've tried about all of those and find them very compatible for my needs and wants in my motorcycle travel. I'll most likely get the Hilleberg this summer. One tough unit. After a few nights in motels the Hille is a good investment which will pay off quick. I have just updated but not totally replaced my sleeping bag. I have a Northface Chrystilis from about 1985 that still serves me well. A pieces of tape to keep the down in. I supplemented it with a Western Mountaineering bag. Seems great, time will tell. I see a lot of good ones but semi rectangular and big is good for me. I like to open them up and use them as a blanket of tighten up to stay warm. Versatility. I'll have to pick up the stove. That small and it works is must have at least for a backup. And affordable. Hey, great seeing you again. Good vid. Safe travels.

      Hey Sam, great to hear from you....Yeah I have not been camping unfortunately and kind of like to do review field tests when I can.. I really hope you can get a Jannu if it's what you fancy. I just got a set of 10mm poles for it so I will be taking on the winds this winter ha ha.. I have also looked at the western mountaineering bags but they are very pricey and I would need a long one and that adds to a little extra weight. Not really sure where I will end up....I think you will love the stove as for what it is it's fantastic.... I have bought one for a few of my mates for Christmas as I love it so much... Hey thank you for your continued support watching and commenting on my videos... All the very best wishes Tom

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Big bus points for each and very different.. Samaya can run at half the weight ie 1.5kg and at 2.0kg with the added vestibule which has much better vestibule space.. Strong enough too for most conditions provided the wind direction does not change... Jannu more space inside and stronger due to the extra pole and probably more durable too due to heavier fabric... Having both they really cover all of my camping needs... Best wishes and I hope that that helps.. Tom

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey thank you for the feedback.. Definitely not IMO or from what I see on the internet.. 1 cm less is fine.. I am 184 cm and my pads are generally 183 which is perfect.. But if you are over 184 cm then I would probably consider a long pad. There is always a bit of personal preference and most people are now preferring wide pads for comfort as there isn't much difference weight wise or in pack space.. I hope that helps.. Any further questions just ask if I haven't been clear. Best wishes Tom

    I tell yah, what I'm learning about the new sleeping bags just makes me want to keep my 30 or 40 year old ones just a little longer. The facts of duck down versus goose down pretty much does it. Good well made goose down bags do cost a small fortune. Almost as much as a Hilleberg, the duck down about half as much. The recycled material for the outer and inner shells is not a selling point for me. At those prices I want the best of the best brand new. I'm trying a RAB 30 F bag. Duck down. Lumpy down. At least it is rectangular and can be fully opened. Just like my old Northface from 35 years back with great material and goose down filling. I'll see how this plays out.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před rokem +1

      Hey Sam. I had a Rab duck down jacket at one point and it lost its loft very quickly.... Some manufactures now use it as its cheaper and lots of people dont know that its doesn't last as well.. As you say a new bag with say 900 Fill power down willl cost me so much and there is no getting around it.. I am now considering one of the ultralight Mountain Equipment bags which look very good... Alll the very best wishes Tom

    Hey Tom. Totally on the same page as you about the BA Rapide SL. Changed to it this year 👍🏻. Can you tell me if it fits in the Hilleberg Enan? I’ve seen you using it in the Akto. Thanks and cheers from Canada

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi, I cannot tell exactly as I haven't tried but looking at the dimensions I would think it would... There is only 2cm difference at the ends between Akto and Ewan and this may not even matter as the length is so good that the pad is not at the ends anyway... The Enan is technically wider in the middle too.. so the regular wide should fit even though its 63cm wide which is wider than the tent at the very end... Hope this helps. Tom

    I have been reading reviews and waiting for the best mattress ever. I bought Big Agnes Rapide SL to replace my temporary, cheap (£40) amazon TREKOLOGY 80 UL. I can say Trekology is more comfy. It got mini curve (Curvature design) and higher sides, the feeling you're sleeping in a cocoon. Material is great. Sizing 191x57cm is perfect for my 183cm height, slim athletic body. The only issue, it is cold matt (R value 1.6) to sleep on in winter season hence I bought Big Agnes Rapide SL with PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation technology. Turns out standard long is O.K.'ish but I'm ordering Wide Long. On standart width both arms won't stay on the matt, only one. Rapide SL is really comfortable but Why it's not as comfortable as Trekology? - when I sleep without pillow my head has no place where to rest on. The waffle design is too close to each other and there is no gap/slot where to rest your head in. BUT that is minor issue most of us sleep with a camping pillow, me too now.
