    A much more relaxed "manual of arms instruction" than we got in basic training, much better than the SADF 'Korporaal' shouting and making us do push ups. I got so used to carrying my 'Vrou" everywhere, sleeping, using the bush latrine and even at mess call. Brings back fond memories.

      I'm glad it brings back memories for you! I hope there are some good ones among them.
      I try my best to keep it as short and informative as possible. Many new FAL owners struggle with running their rifles correctly. So here we are...

    I own one of the last true Belgian FAL’S imported into the US under Browning by Gunsouth, a model 50.00 I bought in mid 80’s new. A safe queen, I ran a hundred rounds thru it, cleaned it, and it hasnt seen sunlight since. My M1A gets used frequently and comparitively I find them both capable battle rifles with accuracies consistent with their design intent when shooting M80 Ball. After warching your video, I think Its time to pull out the FAL and get some range time on it now that I turn 70.

      @thefalguy9848  Před 3 měsíci +4

      That's awesome. I hope this rifle runs like a dream. I was never able to understand and enjoy the M14/ M1A rifle. I believe it to be a bad design but to each his/ her own. Enjoy the pre ban FN!

      @@thefalguy9848A properly made M14 is a very durable and accurate rifle. I’m not talking about the popular civilian market models made by Springfield Armory…those are not made to the original government spec. If they were, they would be a lot more expensive.
      There’s an outfit called LRB that makes semiautomatic-only M14s for the civilian market that are in fact made to the original spec. Usually they are surplus rifles that have been completely restored/refurbished to “like new” condition. They start at about $3500.
      A little known fact about why the M16 replaced the M14 in mid 1960s: It wasn’t just because of our involvement in Vietnam, although that was certainly a factor. It was also because the military just couldn’t get M14s fast enough. They were prohibitively costly and time consuming to make.
      The M14 has the obvious defect of an exposed action, and the ergonomics are not helpful in dealing with recoil. But it’s got a forged receiver and is generally built to Last Forever, plus it has excellent iron sights and is very accurate for a standard issue service rifle…IF they are properly made, which a lot of them weren’t initially; QC issues early on would prove to be another nail in the M-14’s coffin.
      Probably most significantly, the M-14 is associated with a moment in American history - late 50s/early 60s - that is widely regarded as the peak of American civilizational dominance and self-confidence; it has enormous “Americana” nostalgia appeal.
      I say all of this despite not personally owning one. Not only that, but I’m a huge fan of the FAL, too….and I don’t have one of those, either. At this point I have no plans to acquire either, but if I did, I’d have trouble deciding which one to buy. I do lean towards the FAL. So, I don’t have a personal dog in this fight and if I did I’d probably side with you. Just explaining here what drives the appeal of the M-1A/M14 platform.
