@Gaye Keen Patriotism is INTANGIBLE, and your definition of what makes "a good American" isn't absolute. The flag as a symbol isn't us. Our IDEAS are US. And the ability to RESPECT those who disagree with our values are US. To judge others based on your sense of patriotism IMO isn't truly patriotic. Obeying the law and not physically harming others are higher on my list than a person who don't act the way we want. Putting on a uniform and being shot at multiple times during four tours (ending a few years ago) is no fun. And receiving medals for doing your job or because you had no choice is weird. But that's me. My service to country don't make me more patriotic than a legally protesting American - or definitely you. I disagree that "our history" must fill everyone with your sense of patriotism. But you are right on one point, and that was the "Comrade" remark. Sorry, it was OTT, but I smiled when it was typed. As for the celebrations I do believe they were celebrating a little to much against Thailand, but they are aloud to celebrate. I mean they scored a goal in the World Cup which is a big deal. Also as for them sharing their political beliefs, it’s not like they got on to the field and said, Boo Trump! They expressed their beliefs off of the field, which is a constitutional right that everyone in America has.

It's great that they are getting support nationally. Given they way they behave, they will never gain international fame but national fame is good. Let's just keep the expectations grounded. US teams do not inspire other countries period (maybe the odd foreigner) but they don't have to. As long as they feel good about themselves in their own world, that is what counts.
