Nigerian-German Athlete Yemisi Ogunleye Wins Gold For Germany At The Olympics

Yemisi Ogunleye made history on Friday by winning the gold medal in the Women’s Shot Put final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Competing for Germany, Ogunleye’s powerful throw of 20.00m secured the country’s first gold in this event in 20 years, since Astrid Kumbernuss in 1996.
Born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Ogunleye’s remarkable victory was celebrated with jubilation as she proudly draped the German flag around her shoulders and rang the victory bell at Stade de France.
In a thrilling competition, New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche took silver with a throw of 19.86m, and China’s Song Jiayuan claimed bronze with 19.32m. Despite Wesche’s strong performance, Ogunleye responded with a perfect throw to claim gold.
Notably, Nigeria was not represented in the women’s shot put event, where Ogunleye secured gold. In addition to her athletic achievements, Ogunleye is also a talented gospel singer, and after her victory, she shared a heartfelt Yoruba gospel song in celebration.
