The knife is 1095 Steel and the Mustard was left on there for 1 hour per side. Hopefully this helps clear that up a bit.
Will it work with freshly ground mustard?
Literally was about to be my exact 2 questions. I did a practice round for 30 minutes and it looks decent but doesn't have those really sharp dark etched lines right up against the mustard
I was just going to ask how long you left it on👍 thanks for making it clear🍺🇨🇦
that turned out great!
THAT IS SUPER COOL. I am doing this with the stainless steel pick guard on my guitar.
Thanks! That would be awesome.
Great video. Great knife. Love your humor...
nice job . reminds me of a tropical fish. like your technique.
This is your show you ware what you want, I am 63 and have tattoos I think they are great ! Just keep up with the great ideas.
Good job! Don't even care about a crazy guy that doesn't like your shirt, your tattoos or even your knifes! Keep on making what you want to!
Just awesome!
Thank you!
Dude, I've always liked the way mustard patinas come out... I need to do them more often. This confirms it. 🙌
I was super happy with the outcome and will be doing it more often now.
The Rivers' Experience how long do you leave it on there to etch it? 1 hr?
Yes, 1 hour on each side.
Dose all mustard do that to blade steel or noon going to give it a shoot on my next knife .
Scott Douglas look for vinegar on the ingredient list.
Great job. I am going to try it!
That’s incredible. I have to try it. Love that knife btw.
Thank you!
Looks great
Thanks!
Pretty cool!
Thanks!
The mustard came out really great
never let a hater get in your head... hell, don't wear a shirt at all if you have to! lol
Top mit Senf !!!
Dude 😎 you're a freaking artest. Wow,great job,you never cease to impress. Thanks.
Think I’m gonna try this with a 30-60 minute vinegar bath prior to tiger stripe mustard pattern
I'm only here to watch badass knives being made.👍Could careless what shirt your wearing.
That turned out SWEET!! I may need to try that one day.
Very Impressive! My son will love that look.
That is crazy that just mustard could do that!!! Take care be safe and keep up the great work.
Wear a damn tank if you want bro! Sheesh!
have an old carbon steel chefs knife im redoing. hope this stops the rust as i didnt know that sanding the blade would cause rust. i enjoyed the info as i"ll cover the whole blade in mustard for a couple hours. HAPPY NEW YEAR to ya and thanks !
The longer you leave the mustard on the blade the darker the etch
If i were you, I would wear a tank top in every video from now on.
Cool zebra ! 👍
Looks killer!! And so easy... holy shit! Thanks for the vid, man. Cheers!!
Looks great!
Love the mustard etching who knew right? Would have looked cool to have the mustard squiggle.
Super cool....simple and great look, thanks for sharing. Anaco, Anz.
Wow! Bravo looks good I have to try it on my spyderco and see how's look

Great vid , great etch pattern 🌭👍
Building a 9mm derringer. The only gun part i have is a glock 17L barrel. It doesn't serve any purpose but just to test my skillset. Thing of mustard etching the frame.
I’m going to give it a try on a Bowie I’m making.
I think it came out saweeeeet!
Thanks!
Who cares what you wear...bahaha i'm here for the content. It 's not a fashion channel. Keep up the good work, good watching here from Australia!
👍👍😊
Thank you Johnny!
thanks for the vid! PS you dont have to defend anything that has meaning to you Sir!
Man the only people who complain about tattoos are 80+ years old and hate their life 😅 love this etch man 😁👍 gonna try this tonight
Superb dude! So beautiful. You didn't say how long you let the mustard stay on it though
This was about 20 minutes per side.
@@theriversexperience9383 Thank you. I deal mainly with aluminum wall hanging animals. Gonna try a pantina on aluminum. Your thoughts?
Nice 👌 🐯
Show your tattoos all you want 👌👌👌👌👌
Brother,
I dont care if you wear hot pink tight girl tops and yellow panties if you keep putting content like you do this I'll keep watching, albeit with one eye closed! I'm from California, I'm used seeing that everyday!
Hey sorry I've been a little behind on watching "Your Videos" I like to read most of the comments after the video is over. Well I came up on a "rude comment" I had to say something Yes I kept it some what polite. Had to "Defend You and Your Video" You shouldn't have to apologize about what you're wearing or what's tattooed on your body especially if it's Not offensive. Keep doing whatcha do, dress however you want.
Love the etching and the overall knife shape and design. What type of steel is it?
It's 1095, I meant to mention it but forgot to.
I can dig it on the heat man. I'm in Vegas and I forge in sandals hahahahaha no lie. I'm doing a patite Santuko style Chef knife and I have the French's on there till morning. Any buffering? Or will it rub off? This will be a client's blade they told me to try something new for the and gave me $120, soooo here we are lol
Mustard etching is a forced blue patina, with proper care, it should not fade. The parts of the blade that did not react with the mustard can still rust.
Great vid. Hey, can u put a pantina on a store bought shiny butcher knife or do i need to scuff it up with scot-brite?
Most store bought butcher knives are stainless steel, which are made specifically to resist patinas. If you can find a high carbon steel butcher knife, that will pick up a nice patina.
@@theriversexperience9383 Im trying a pantina on scuffed up aluminum. Checking it tomorrow
That looks awesome, now do you still have to heat treat the knife and temper it or did you do that already ?
It would already be done before doing this
Does it work with good mustard, or do I have to use mustard I wouldn't even put on a frozen corndog?
Wow,Sweet blade.just wondering if the etching wares away over time ?
It hasn't yet but with enough use it could for sure.
Great video and very informative.
Have you tried to do the mustard and then do a coffee etch??
Will this fade as the rest of the blade patinas over time?
There will always be some of it there. It etchs the blade and makes that area rougher than the higher polished sections.
How would you recommend preserving that finish? Wax? Or??
I know this video is a few years old ……but how long did you leave the mustard on the knife before wiping it off the blade i just tried it and it did do much to the blade …. I’m using 1085 steel ?
It was about 1 hour per side.
@@theriversexperience9383 that turn out awesome by the way
Nice job man!!! Tell me... is the white PVC pipe an attachment to a vacuum?
Not at the moment. I just vacuum it out after it gets full. That way nothing catches on fire.
A little tip... Next time mix some Worcesterhire sauce with the mustard and bit of salt...
(mustard, acidic enough to eat steel)
Humans(puts on food and eats it)
100% valid lol.
All you need to say about the tank top deal is it is your life you can wear what ever you want they dont like it scroll on to the next vid. this is exactly what is wrong with this world today to many snowflakes. ( MAGA ) !!!!!!!!!!!
Do you clean your scotch bright belts or just trash them?
I clean them and when I'm done using them I cut them up and use them in other ways.
@@theriversexperience9383 how do you clean them? I’ve been trashen them once they get loaded up. Thanks
@@J.TurnerHandmadeKnives I use WD40 and my rubber belt eraser.
@@theriversexperience9383 Thanks I will try that.Love your channel!!
How long will the Mustard etching last on the knife? Will it come off or is it permanent?
it's a forced patina so it is permanent.
It would have been funnier if you said no one's holding a gun to your head making you watch🤣
That guy needs to worry about himself and less about your tattoos. He’s probably bummed that his wife loves dudes with tattoos. 🤙
How long did you leave the mustard on the blade?
1 Hour on each side. I will be going over a few of these things in tomorrows vlog.
alot of rambling, no real clue as to how long you left the mustard on the blade, did you only sand it to 100 grit, did you sand it further after the mustard? Details please
New, obligatory shirt comment (LOL): you started with a grey shirt and ended with a red shirt. I'm trying to figure out a reason to be offended. ;-)
lol, gotta have those wardrobe changes.
