    In the US Neutral and Ground are connected / bonded at the panel, and neutral is never used with 240 volts. So when you had the neutral connected you were putting the motor under a lot of strain, causing one winding to become like a brake which was causing the thermal cutout to trigger which stopped the motor until it cooled down. When you disconnected the neutral it was no longer under strain and worked as it should.

      100% I had the same problem when I took a hot tub motor and used it for a pool. Changed the wire to be just 110

    • @henrikvtcodes
      @henrikvtcodes Před 3 lety +79

      @@augustreil No, it was just causing a ton of extra power to go across the motor coils. More power + resistance = HEAT!
      Split phase electric works by attaching a contact to the center of the secondary coil (aka the neutral.) Voltage between two hots is usually 220-250 volts. When you center-tap it, you get 110-125 volts.
      2 speed means that the pump can run on either split phase 110-125, or full 220-250. Either way, you complete the circuit across the transformer. With the neutral connected, it added another path for electricity to short across instead of completing across the second hot leg, effectively causing a short circuit. Short circuit= more power + resistance = HEAT! The energy has to go somewhere!
      Hope I could help!

    • @augustreil
      @augustreil Před 3 lety +9

    "Black wire and white wire is low speed."
    "Red wire and white wire are high speed."
    So if you connect the black, red, and white wires, what speed do you get?
    Answer: the wrong speed! It is trying to run at two speeds at once, and is fighting itself.
    Probably you would want it wired black and white at 110V for low speed, but their hack of connecting 220 across the black and red wires also works.

    • @mbrick
      @mbrick Před 3 lety +2

      Yes I had the same thought, black + white for 110V is ideal but 2 legs of 120 also has the same result... so it is running on "low" speed now which is good for this application.

    220v appliances for the most part do not use the neutral. You use the neutral only if the appliance has a motor or some other part that needs 120V then it uses one of the hot and the neutral to make 120V. A 220V pump uses all 220V and has no need for 120V, so you NEVER hook up the neutral.

    Looked to me like those are dual voltage motors, capable to be wired at 220v or 120v depending on where the wires are put on the terminals. There's usually a diagram on the side of the motor or on the back of the cover you took off. If the motor is set for 220v and you run it at 120v then it will have less than half its rated hp and get hot like yours did. If you hooked it at 120 and put 220v to it...its usually a few seconds and they're burnt up. Start Caps can be tested as well.

Some of the people are a little too creepily obessed with Andrew on there but other wise he’s able to interact more with everyone there and posts smaller videos and asks for advice on different projects and things. It’s a nice community to be a part of.

      This, and its basic to almost all electric motor. Amp the motor after install - if its using over the rated amps on the sticker - its working hard then it should be - and will maybe work. but will not last. -- Also all those motors (first ones) have thermal overload switch/breaker - the power to the motor is internally cut until temp lowers or 'resets'. Some motors this is a one time fuse.. But heated bearings can add the heat or actually dead motor but Im sure all those pumps 'COULD' be serviced but we all just replace everything nowadays.
