- With rappers of all different lanes expressing their views on mental health, suicide is a prominent topic in hip-hop right now. Recently, Logic performed his suicide prevention track “1-800-273-8255” on the MTV’s VMA stage, bringing many in the audience to tears. Lil Uzi Vert sang of contemplating death over a failing relationship on his hit “XO TOUR Llif3.” And throughout XXXTENTACION’s latest album '17', he raps about the tragic suicide of his close friend Jocelyn Flores. Check out the Genius video above that takes a deeper look at the state of mental health in hip-hop.

true
Parii27 s
and very sad video
I agree
Tru
I much prefer hearing rappers talk about real issues than bitches and money.
Alien Person shit like this gets me in my feelings and shit😂 I need some fun shit to listen to. Logic goes crazy tho just not my kinda guy in terms of music
+Eli So pretty much all mainstream rappers now??
Alien Person Thats why I love Kendrick, Cole, Logic, Eminem, Vince Staples, Vic Mensa etc
That's good, it means you're awake to what's real in life, this other shit in the industry is the illuminati brainwashing people to hide the truth from them. That's why people that speak the truth get shit from masses, because they're sheep! One day they'll regret being so arrogant
Alien Person 2pac, Kendrick, and Logic are good rappers
x has been talking about suicide before 17
kono. Thank u for example skin I don’t wanna do this anymore wing ridding angle never
@@walkemdownc4256 alone pt 1
Kaiden there was blood in my tears
Very true.
Thank you especially kill me
Don't forget Kid Cudi fam, the og to start talking about this.
Tiago Almeida facts have you heard Notorius B.I.G - Suicidal Thoughts
That nigga was the first guy who put light on that back when social media wasn't playing big parts in music life.
Biggie, nas, prodigy, immortal technique, most east coast rappers thought about suicide
The Golden Pablo Slim Shady

Thats because depression is very real, people just don't understand
Carlos Martinez really lol I thought it was fake
Santa Clause The only fake thing here is you bitch.
It is though...
XXX EmoTacion that's such a fucking blanketed statement that's just one cause for depression.
Carlos Martinez we got the same name cuz
That breakfast club interview almost had me in tears, damn
UnPhayzable it's some deep stuff

"Sometimes I look in a mirror and ask myself
Am I really scared of passing away
If it's today I hope I hear a
Cry out from heaven so loud it can water down a demon
With the holy ghost till it drown in the blood of Jesus
I wrote some raps that make sure that my lifeline
Rake in the cent of a reaper, ensuring that my allegiance
With the other side may come soon
And if I'm doomed, may the wound
Help my mother be blessed for many moons
I suffer a lot
And every day the glass mirror get tougher to watch
I tie my stomach in knots
And I'm sure not why I'm infatuated with death
My imagination is surely an aggravation of threats
That can come about
Cause the tongue is mighty powerful
And I can name a list of your favorites that probably vouch
Maybe cause I'm dreamer and sleep is the cousin of death
Really stuck in the scheme of, wondering when I'mma rest"
He's not directely saying he's suicidal but he's saying he is not too bothered whether he dies or not.
X and lil peep are both gone now :(
Vuduhhh you a tupac fan?
R U Still Down? Yeah very much so?
Oof
In memory of X and lil peep I always listen to falling down.
Who's Tupac
These are the types of videos we need right here. Videos that talk about real issues that matter so we can make a difference and make the world a better place. Not these videos that spill hate and resentment on people because of the way they look or because of the things they believe. Differences is what makes the world an interesting place. I've dealt with suicidal thoughts just thinking about how shitty this world seems and what the media puts out there. If it wasn't for cudi i wouldnt be alive and i hope one day the world gets over all this bullshit fighting so we can focus on the real issues.
adrian santiago lmao these videos are shit
Im specifically saying from these people
This is the most inspirational and relevant rap topic since Lil Boosie's "We out chea"
HAZZARD Great bate. 10/10 would respond again.
bruh look at lil uzi verts latest video, straight up demonic shit. not sure if that would help the world
why didnt y'all talk about because the internet by gambino? the album was all about his mental state, anxiety, insecurites and suicide. underrated album
yung leo that album was one of the best I've ever heard. The screenplay that comes with the record was what really hooked me.
yung leo red bone is overrated asf
Lord Itachi I knowwww bro, they play it on the radio and my mama be like so this is childish gamblino?
It happens
I agree but these are all recent. BTI was a few years ago
Its not just Hip-Hop, its all types of music and these are young artists showing their struggles and what they've been through. Teens and young adults feel like they have no purpose or Impact in life, they only feel like their role is to go to school
Armando C word. A lot of younger people now a days struggle with finding an activity that actually makes them feel worth something
Armando C yoooooo i reallyfelt this
No one said it was only hip hop.
Lil Cheese Pizza exactly that’s why Chester was brought up
Kid Cudi saved us all
Dee Bel what are some songs that are really saved y’all per se I’m a yungin I don’t really know Kid Cudi that well

Kid cudi had me in tears when he was tryna commit suicide but he's my hero
ImIansaii TWIY I had no idea
The Soundtrack to My Life, Man on the Moon, My World, The Sky Might Fall, and Cudi Zone were powerful songs while I was mentally ill. Actually just about all songs from Man on The Moon: The End of Day spoke to me.
Isabel it ain't a competition stupida
People who r weak enough to have a rapper talk u out of suicide deserve to die. That s by from the weakest track on his album. It gets praise because a bunch of teens that don't know anything about anything listen to it
Pie Master • Man, shut the fuck up.
kid cudi def saved alot of people lives including my own he is so underated and misunderstood it's upsetting, when I hear people call him lame shit pisses me off
what kid cudi album do you reccomend
Pivotkid85 kid named cudi motm motm2
Isabel that's nice but no one was comparing the 2 I was only talking about cudi
ah love then you wouldn't be here my nigga
king tvt He lame.
R. I. P XXX
Man, Logic's performance really saved my life. That song has been on replay all day ever since he released it back in the Winter. I was feeling so low and wanted to kill myself, but I know that this is merely a chemical imbalance in my head and that better days are ahead. It's so nice to see mainstream artists addressing the pain that a lot of the youth are going thru. Mental health needs to be a priority.
MariNate The song was released May 5th by the way.
MariNate fuck off
You should've done it
fuck Tha police
MariNate proud of you. Stay strong
This is one of Genius's best videos yet... and yeah, I'm 23 right now, and Kid Cudi definitely helped me out so much. I have his album posters all over my room. Fack I miss that man
Costa Brothers I'm 17, almost 18. And honestly I can't go a day with out contemplating Suicide without his music.
Costa Brothers he's touring ppds rn
Costa Brothers not finished yet
Isaiah Rashad also speaks on the subject in his music. Gets me through a lot. Underrated as fuck.
The Homie Bruh he so underrated it's not even fucking funny.
Ayrton Munian isaiah Rashad Aint over rated
The Homie zaywop the truth🔥
especially his old mixtape, so underrated it's crazy. Guy's a fucking genius
i would have been dead by now if his music didn't exist
I started crying when that guy was talking about his daughters suicide
Its not just depression and SI, so many other mental illnesses out there. Depression is thrown around a lot, personally i most notably suffer from BPD along with heavy traits of bipolar, anxiety, depression and adhd. XXX’s song “Sad!” screams borderline, among other things. I can relate to XXX in that way. And a lot of these other hip hop/rap artists who drink, smoke, party, do drugs, etc... maybe its to feel good but not for pleasure necessarily, more so to temper the feelings of sadness, despair, hopelessness all that shit that comes from mental health conditions. This was a great video, more should be done like this. Mental health is really taken for granted. There are ways to treat it and get better. Thank you to the rappers who make themselves vulnerable. Much respect and thanks.
*KID CUDI BEEN*
*TALKING ABOUT IT,*
*SINCE FOREVER!!*

Kingzy word up son word up
Kingzy I WAS THINKIN THIS SHIT YES
FACTS.
KID CUDI is the one that rules this type of rap, shotout to xxx for contuining his legacy
Its not just hip hop, its the entire generation of kids. Wake up ppl
Shuhei Hisagi Keep it going we live in dark times. Natrual disasters, in the brink of nuclear war, being alone in an ever distancing society is hard but as people we only need love to continue our speices.
Deustileaf damn that was deep as fuck
idk I developed things that made me tough and made my heart cold. It made me not care because stuff got taken away from me when I was young. I realized shit could happen anytime and you shouldn't care about it a lot. When my cousin came I started to care for a little I was pretty surprised with myself too. Even if you do make your heart tough your gonna break one day by some shit
No there's always been suicide and depression BUT social media seems to be a new factor
Shuhei Hisagi And Grownups too😕
It's sad that we're just now opening our eyes to these artist expressing their depression in their music and with artist like Peep and Juice Wrld passing from drugs, we overlooked their signs of depression beforehand because the music was "lit".
Man cudi has to be more appreciated
I can honestly say that Kid Cudi was definitely one of the biggest artists that helped me cope with my suicidal thoughts
Cause he stuck on that acid niggga
OG Teshane Not back in the day bruh
imho you should've listened to your own advice and got it over with like I did, and I was reborn as a sexy black dude
who knows you might get lucky too
Joseph you weak
BegForMercy - wtf I hope your joking
You're talking mental health in hip hop and can't even mention Earl Sweatshirt?? Dude saved me.
UNCONVENTIONAL lol deadass what i just said, i feel the same exact way
Nasir Cummings he deserves so much respect. Honestly he drew me back to hip hop, I remember when I was at my lowest point and my homie showed me the Grief video and I instantly connected.
idlsidgo singlehandedly addresses this whole topic youre god damn right they missed a spot
UNCONVENTIONAL there's too many to mention em all but for sure he's a big one
Me and my nibbling conscience.
Beautiful Lasers still fucks me up. It's such a dark yet beautiful song. Crazy fact about the song; Lupe Fiasco tried desperately to get Chester on Beautiful Lasers, but it didn't.
Xxxtentacion saved me
Karina Rodriguez you mean from suicide right?
RIP
He’s gone now sadly😢😔
*laying down in a sassy pose*
Ironic.
Hmm... listen to logic. Here much better
I got a tattoo from kid cudi's lyrics "since my father died i aint been right since". It basically explains my life.
Eli Olivero wow, thats dope dude! Ill also get a kid CUDI tattoo, or some of his lyrics too :)
Nuno Herdeiro thanks bro :D
I know man..
HAZZARD Aint nobody gotta get over anything, you just gotta push through to survive life.
HAZZARD why would people not get tattoos that mean something?
Realllll shit , it's about time this is being addressed. The black community especially seems incapable of grasping how important it is to talk and understand each other without clowning. It's a shame really.. this shit is serious, why can't everyone just help someone instead of casing & shit. To whoever reads this I challenge you to help someone do better next time they do something they don't like whether they ugly or whatever give them tips or something, anything. This cycle has to end
Blessed Vibes that's facts
Shisui's Right Eye That comment was Fake news.... Ok but seriously its false af. My grandfather was (and maybe is in still, idk) in the free masons, has the ring to prove it and other things. This isn't what they stand for lol. Free masons are like the illuminati.
I was beginning to think i was the last person on earth that felt this way thank you for proving me wrong
yes!!!
Shisui's Right Eye So just because your life is shit it's white peoples fault?
R.I.P xxxtentacion

FINALLY CUDI IS NOTICED
CorbanzoTv cudi has been noticed for years what r u talking about
only smart people noticed kid cudi, I remember back in 2010 when kid cudi dropped he second album people were making fun of him and calling him crazy sick person, complex was the only blog was rooting for him.
Rage Man what r u talking about, day n night was a really popular song, I was listening to it since I was like 8
$uicide boy$ are better
CorbanzoTv migos mentioned him
depression is a big one, but what about the bipolar hip hop heads and the psychotic/schizophrenic heads that are avoiding treatment because they think they need to stay scary and hard (pause) while they're paranoid of people trying to kill them or hallucinating and then doing drugs and just pushing it to the side?
I have bipolar and do not do this. You clearly know jack shit about mental illness dude just shut the fuck up. This made you look so damn stupid.
I didn't elaborate on the bipolar stuff, chill my dude.
Platinu Mane/Alfred Rieder Bipolar is a lot more dangerous in terms of suicide, I agree with you there. A reason people don't commit suicide with depression is the lethargy that comes with it, but when you're bipolar you transition to mania and suddenly there's a window where you're depressed/suicidal and energetic. Alfred you could be cyclothymic or have Bipolar 2, i.e less severe bipolar with longer transitions between depression and mania. I'm sorry you don't like facts but bipolar puts you at a greater risk for suicide than someone with depression alone. It seems to me you're the one who clearly knows nothing about your own illness. I think the only mental illness with a higher rate of suicide is Gender Dysphoria, which is upwards of 40%.
Platinu Mane who tf are you cause you just described my life perfectly.
(pause) im sorry i lol'd at that.
RIP ✝😪👼
I'm glad more rappers have been bringing up the topic of mental health issues. Mental health is a thing that a ton of people ignore or don't take seriously.
The whole video I was looking for Cudi, guy is special saved my life doesn't get enough credit
this was a truly amazing piece. Great job Genius for shining light on this situation. Mad respects for you.

thank you for this video.
RIP CAPITAL STEEZ
King CAPITAL in 4 months!!!!
Revok Sixth That's what niggas were saying last year and the year before that and the year before that lol
Uncle Ruckus Its confirmed tho
Depression is very common in black communities but is not accepted. This problem has to be changed.
MP3s and Trees
Dude: "What's 2+2?"
You: "What about all the other numbers?"
That's how stupid you look right now.
Isaac D seems like that the general idea with every community it's old culture of manning up
Its more *common in whites! Thats because we are warriors and lion hearts.
Anyone arguing with this is fucking stupid if you live in a black fam in a majority black neighborhood you know the feeling of that and not being able to tell anybody not even your own family because of them blowing it off as not serious you don't get help from them no matter what unless the problem is physical
Suicide, where I'm from at least, is seen as a white person thing and if you even so attempt it, you better make sure that shit is fatal or else youll be bullied into a depression thatll make the depression that drove you to suicide look like a joke.
Thank you for this video, damn
great video man, thanks

RCS Miss you STEEZY
STEEZ WILL LIVE ON
Even though this is old, it still teaches us a very important lesson about life. Life is more than just events. It's about expressing your emotions and your current thoughts. If I were to think of commiting suicide, I wouldn't do it. Just accept that you think what you think. Killing yourself won't help. Just be happy with who you are and live a whole life to remember your happiest moments in your life. Fight the killing, and get over your depression by thinking of nice things. I'm never going to commit suicide. I just wanna live a whole life and accept what I am as a person

Nope. Hip hop was always escapism. The very first hip hop party was just a safe place for young black kids to have fun away from the troubles of New York.
DKG Entertainment don't say that, the guy's dead now
Thank you for this video genius🙌🏽

I feel the schools and the hospitals of United stated should not just have a physical check up they should also have a a mental check up because people do not think it's good thing. And its like as if it's something wrong to have a therapist to have your Mind in Check.
mguan17 it's because logics biracial
im not sure if all colleges in the us do this but i know at least some do. if you make an appointment for a college health center, no matter what the appointment is for, you'll have to take a quick questionnaire about how you've been feeling. it's a depression screening test and if your score is high enough the nurse or whoever will guide you to other people who can help you like therapists or psychiatrists etc. it's actually the only reason i ended up getting any help for my depression while i was in college (came in with a concussion, left with some ice packs and appointments with 3 different therapists lol) but it's only really meant to catch depression and of course it only works if 1-the school in question actually requires the questionnaire, 2-a student is sick or injured in any other way and makes an appointment and 3-if they fill it out honestly, so i completely agree that it should be standard just like normal physical check ups!
A very emotional video
Thank you for this video, this topic needs a lot of shine. There are many out there who struggle day in and out. They need to know they are not alone. Suicide is not the answer.
Scott Mescudi got me through majority of my life.
It is extremely important to point out that most of these examples are predominantly Black males as well. Black men suffer, but why are we so quick to ignore or pretend like we don't suffer? Why is it a norm that appearing weak is unforgivable, but in the moment of attempting/actually ending your life do we open our eyes to mental health/illness for Black men? This has got to stop. We got to acknowledge when we are hurt. Fuck a friend who judges you for hurting. Fuck a pretend happy, 'cause you can't pretend to be happy about the things that are severely destroying us on a daily. As a black man, we NEED to open up our emotions. Vulnerability is a healthy thing.
Those classic tunes are amazing
This is a good video. An important one too. Props.
