Great reaction. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar over the past month; it went viral and garnered more than 2 million views in a couple of weeks, but he has been creating great music for more than 10 years. His latest release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." I only recently learned about Ren and have gone down this rabbit hole ever since. Many of the subjects, experiences, and emotions expressed in his songs touch me on a very personal level because I can relate to and identify with many of his struggles.
A little background on Ren that I gathered from the internet. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue. His illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours a day. Ren was initially diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome. It would take seven years before he was finally correctly diagnosed with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and brain damage. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. He is currently in Canada for more treatments.
Ren is an incredible and unique artist; he plays multiple instruments, has great vocal ability, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. From what I read, his videos are generally shot live, all in one take by his friend. I recommend you check out some of his other work. The trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unexpected ending; WATCH THEM IN THE STATED ORDER, as this is the flow of the storyline or just watch “The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full)” which includes “Violet’s Tale at the end. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. I would watch the official live music video. "Chalk Outlines" is one of my favorite songs right now. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation.
As a solo act, Ren performs a range of genres, much of it hip-hop/rap influenced, as well as guitar-based ballads. His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) and any of his performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up) are awesome and well worth checking out, both the busking (street performances) and their live recordings. Ren has impressive vocal and instrumental skills. He is one-of-a-kind and appears mature beyond his years.
Ren just released his latest single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next 3-6 months that he expects to be gone. "Sick Boi" is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren."
I have been blessed to have been a listener of Ren for several years! His messages transcend Generations!🌿💔

Chalk Outlines is a *must* to hear his full vocal range. This guy is a genius at all encompassing artistry, from every word that leaves his mouth to how everything we see in how he films is so impactful. Seriously, a once in a lifetime creative.

Sub Conscious Ren - the light is behind him, so his face is in the dark, the lights flicker when he speaks and he strums his guitar more aggressively.
Patient Ren - the light is in front of him brightening his face, lights are calm, no flickering, and guitar strumming is smooth and melodic.
Also, I wish all reactors are notified prior to viewing this video to turn of the captions as it cannot keep up and it's just a distraction.

From what I understand, Ren was misdiagnosed for like 10 years or so, and they finally figured out that he has Lyme disease. And I believe he was wheelchair bound at one point. But I found out that he's been making music and busking for a long time.
The representation of evil in this video is often taken a little too literally, in my opinion. People are often very fixated on the Christian notion of "evil", but Ren seems to be suggesting that it's really the dark voice in humans that we dress up to be some kind of demonic supernatural force, as a way to deal with it or even dismiss it. All the bad that happens in the world isn't the result of some kind of mythical invisible being, it's the result of those dark voices in humans taking control and guiding humans to act in a certain way. It's the yin/yang duality of good and bad we're all capable of, and if we learn to deal with the yin we inherently learn to deal with the yang. That's the pendulum he's talking about, working with and understanding the dark side to be able to control it and let he light side lead.
That's my interpretation anyway. He has alluded to this in a stream about the song with fans.
I would definitely recommend watching the Tale of Jenny and Screech, but make sure you watch them all three videos in order (Jenny, Screech and Violet) otherwise you'll lose the impact of the trilogy. There is a full video with all three parts. It's really incredible, and deals with some very serious topics.

@@Pjasonmullins yes, but you also said you even watched it twice, one for the money, one for he show... and you would have to watch some more to get him categorized or whatever... to get to terms with him, and I can understand that, my first reaction was disbelieve... I guess a brain needs some time to adjust to something completely different, and some brains will refuse to do so, glad ours did... :) Have a great day and enjoy it!
