    I haven’t used manure on any of my beds for the last 4 years. I simply spread 6x chicken pellets and blood, snot and bone. Never had a problem I grew Sarpo last last year and harvested them jan this year they were huge. I see a lot of comments that No Dig was the problem, but it actually seems like No Dig really worked well for growing potatoes! Just needed to be hilled up a bit more. Grass breaks down super fast, so maybe try some shredded leaves saved from a previous Autumn. It could be a better choice for a top up mulch. Or even wood chips?

    In the spring we had potatoes that were sprouting, but the spring weather was bad and stalled us and the potatoes got thrown away by the time the garden area was ready. No other potatoes this year became ready like those did, gg potatoes. On a good note, we grew strawberries from seed this summer and now they are in the ground, so next year we'll have something amazingly delicious in late spring~

    Sorry you had a hard lesson but can I just ask a really dumb but kind of crucial question - when you applied the grass clippings, were they green, or brown.
    Green clipping could cause the issue here as they sort of rot into a smelly slime whereas if you used dried clippings that have turned brown, they act more like straw and insulate the ground underneath from drying out too much in the hot weather. And because they are dry, they are less likely to attract slugs and snails.
    I also noticed that your potato plot was very weedy and had growing grass, also things that attract and harbour slugs.

    I think it was the combination of rain and grass clippings, my main crop potatoes were the same and I put lots of grass clippings over the soil as a mulch, ( I did use a hand trowel to plant the potatoes). I'll keep the grass clippings for the compost bin!

  • @MikeJRe2ipi
    @MikeJRe2ipi Před 3 lety +1

    Something similar happened to my maincrop potatoes this year. I used my own compost then partially composted woodchips to 'earth up' but they got attacked by slugs and then I reckon birds were scratching the woodchips away to get at them because everytime I went up I had to recover my greening potatoes... Probably around 1/3 to 1/4 were no good for anything.

    Hi Erica so sorry about your spuds, i grow mine in 30L containers the same as Tony and like him have had great success, he actually puts his containers on the soil so why not try that one year and see what happens, Nigel (muddy boots) does the containers and then sits them on the soil as well so the roots grow out through the holes.
    I have elevated raised beds in the back garden sitting only on flagstone not soil and no allotment, and if i can grow them in containers then surely you can too, plus you get to re-use the soil after a bit of Blood, Fish and Bone is mixed in or Chicken Pellets.

    Well, you are a novice, so it's expected that you will not be as diligent on your crops as a seasoned gardener. It's a sad lesson to learn. Can I ask, what size of jacket potato does a young child need? In 20 years time you will not have events like this because you will be more aware of what can go wrong. Good luck from a 72yo gardener.

      The white stuff in the trench was a bit of wood ash that I sprinkled in.... Those were on my potatoes the year before.
      You're right about animals not given organic manure. Thank you for watching.
