Probably one of the questions the medical staff should have asked was "how hot was the food item?", it could have meant he stayed at the hospital under observation, but, even in 2019, the NHS has been undergoing a lot of underfunding from the government to make their case for pushing private, insurance-based medical care, causing a severe shortage in staff and beds available, ultimately leading to a lot of lives lost, including his sadly... :(

My mama always said: chew your food.
Not sure if this will help in this case, but I believe if he chew his food thoroughly before swallow it, maybe he could feel the burn and spit the food out, if he couldn't feel it, maybe it gives the food time to cool off in his mouth.
But to see how an unseemingly day turned into life-threatening nightmare is just bizzarre. Stay safe, everyone.
Some people swallow food / drink even when it's piping hot...I'm guilty of it sometimes. It's a bad habit that one must kick.

Fried food kills us anyway, and the nutrients in the food are destroyed by being super heated as well. Something NOT taught in typical nutrition classes. College-level scientific tip for you. 😉

As soon as the injury happened, it was extremely unlikely that a non-private doctor would be willing to do a "full screen". They would rather send you home.
Whenever I had something too hot in my mouth or throat I immediately started sipping on ice water even after the pain went away. Just a precaution, like an ice pack for external injuries, that might help reduce the temperature and reduce possible burn injuries or swelling.

Howard is such a rad talking coffee machine!
If you think this is messed up, I’ve got an even better one that a family member personally went through as they apparently got choked on a salt and vinegar potato chip that the doctors say wasn’t even in their esophagus, meaning that the flavoring was apparently what was causing them to gag and wheeze uncontrollably. Thankfully they were fine after getting seen by the ER, though it still begs the question of whether it was all in their head or whether the flavoring actually triggered some sort of allergic reaction that caused their gag reflex to kick into overdrive.
Every time i tried salt and vinegar chips i had a cough fit that made me throw up. I think its an allergic reaction
Definitely an allergy.
If I'm not mistaken, salt and vinegar chips are a "simulated" flavor, meaning that they aren't even salt and vinegar (I might have to search this to double check) so, if this is the case than I would look through the ingredients and see what one most commonly causes allergic reactions. Maybe it something they already know they are allergic to
It could have been a scratch, actually! Similarly to the burns, a scratch could flare in severity hours later, especially if infection develops. Because the body's response to injury is swelling, any injury in the airways is extremely dangerous! Make sure to chew your food properly to avoid this.
@@bishoukun also, salt and vinegar in a wound definitely doesn't help.

new fear unlocked: don't use microwaves

I don't think that should be your concern. Just give it time to cool down like a normal person and then you'll be fine
Just dont swallow it if its hot and burning your mouth
I dont have a microwave
This man is giving me a new phobia every video 💀
He did not chew his food he swalloed his food
If he chew his food
He will burned his tongue first not his throat
The tendency when eat something hot you spit it not swallow
I was a victim of the microwave just yesterday when I heated up some pizza, it wasn't hot enough so I nuked it again, didn't realize there was a crazy hot patch that burned the roof of my mouth so bad that it was peeling off and bleeding. Microwaves and pizza are both risky! I always chew my food for a long time before I swallow, so I guess I could never have this type of injury, but I have read that people who drink piping hot tea or coffee are at a greater risk of esophageal cancer. So I have been trying to let my tea cool down a bit before drinking it, or put an ice cube in to cool it down to a safe temp.
God forbid I can enjoy anything without the fear of death or crippling hospital bills.
Moral of the story:Let your food cool down before you eat it
I live in Chorley. Sad thing is Chorley hospital is 2 minutes away while Bolton is 20+ even with blues & 2's but spending cuts meant the emergency department was no longer open overnight.
5:42 my experience with to microwave is like beep beep , here is your cold food and hot plate.
Anything heated in the microwave - especially foods with fillings like Hot Pockets, can severely burn you. When I am eating such food I cut it up with a fork (a metal fork) into small pieces so the extreme heat has some time to dissipate before chewing and swallowing. I will also chase it down with a cool drink. Never gulp down food, especially hot or hot filled food!
I don't know if it because limitations of the topic or it's your new intended approch, but I personally like longer format of the contents, the documentary style with supplimentary of similar case and facts etc. where it's about 20 - 30 mins. But I am not sure if everyone would agree tho.
Did he just retell the plot of Mrs Doubtfire in the prologue?
"Chew your food and don't eat food too hot"
I gotta say, I eat a lot of microwave baked potatoes, and those babies are HOT. You’ve gotta let them cool a bit before eating.
I've had a burn in my throat from hot rice before. And it was horrible. Didn't want to eat. The only thing I liked was cold water.
I wasn't aware of how serious that could of ended up.
You're very lucky! Cold on a burn, instead of room temperature, can severely worsen it. Glad you're okay.
I love Bean, always happy and positive even through the saddest stories :D
I've got an idea for a series based on this: A man ate; steamed, boiled, grilled, bbqed, sauted, blanched, raw, uncooked, fried... food and died 10 hours later
That's why it's good for medical staff, in cases of throat pain to always scope the throat to check for lesions or burns or other injuries such as an insect bite or sting, it can happen, and it's good to check for such things right away cause you can't see everything just by looking in the mouth.
Also drinking very hot coffee, tea, soup, and other very hot liquids can cause throat cancer even if it doesn't develop into an acute death
Instant coffee plus the contents of a freshly boiled kettle makes it easy to serve yourself a mug of coffee at a toasty 90°C (194°F) or higher. What can I say, us Brits can be an impatient bunch when it comes to our favourite beverages.
Thankfully, this starts cooling down fairly quickly because heat escapes through the air and the sides of the mug. For it to be safe to drink it needs to cool to below 65°C (149°F) which could take ten minutes or more. The warmer your room temperature is, the slower the coffee will cool.
But a quick rule of thumb? If the side of your mug is still uncomfortably hot to touch, your coffee is still too hot to drink. Besides, the pain from sudden contact with a hot mug on sensitive parts of your hand can cause an automatic reflex, spilling that coffee everywhere. And we can't have that now can we.
This is exactly why you must mix any food, if possible, after it is microwaved and let it sit for 30 to 60 seconds.
Don’t worry, this is incredibly rare

Oh I know something like this! There was this one lady who ate her noodles or soup while it was still hot, she passed away hours later because she didn't wait for it to cool down after the noodles were cooked or the soup cooled down. It was shocking for even her coworkers or family who witnessed her do that. She might have had attention seeking issues that lead her up this sad event. I pray that she's at peace with herself.

The most unbelievable part about all of this is the guy not only got a same day emergency appointment, he also got referred to Ear Nose and Throat specialists and saw them the same day, and then he even got paramedics that actually arrived within 5-6 hours. That just doesn't happen in the UK. And we still have to pay for the service. Really makes you wonder why we allow it.
I knew someone who choked to death in their sleep on a piece of steak they later puked/choked it up while sleeping and it caused them to pass away. This steak wasn't chewed correctly or perhaps it was the alcohol in their system but regardless they died choking on a steak hours after it had been eaten.
