In 16 movies our ambassador Jögge Sundqvist or surolle as he’s known, shows the different knife grips and techniques necessary for safe carving and wood working.
Jögge Sundqvist is a craftsman through and through. As a wood worker and woodcarving artist he has become famous for his impressive ornaments and beautiful carved objects. He chisels out stools, chairs, knives, cupboards, spoons and trays, tablets, sculptures and word boards. He is a fourth generation craftsman and was brought up as part of the Swedish handicraft movement.

I'm new to it too, and I just got a 120 and 164 and haven't used them yet! Make sure to get or make a strop, too.
The 120 Carbon is just stellar. Just keep your fingers away from it ;)

Surolle is the man
Could you please advise where to buy an initial set of tools to us? I am inexperienced with whittling, but want to get started and feel it is something I would really enjoy. I am a Forest School Leader in the UK, so any brands or supplier tips would be useful too. many thanks. Sue (really enjoying the video tutorials - very informative) x
I just got into spoon carving so can give my experience getting basic tools. The Mora 106 is honestly the best purchase I have made so far. I go lucky and got it on sale but it is worth the full price. It is cheap enough so you don't need to be precious about it, sharpen and play with it as it is easy to get another!
After that any sort of curved spoon knife would work. I got a Beavercraft one from Amazon and it is fine. At this point you just need a curved knife and in till you have more experience you won't know what curved shapes you prefer. That being said I personally would find a gentle/long curved knife like Nic Westermann offeres to be best for me, but I am not at the point of affording one yet. I also got the curved spoon gouge from Beavercraft and it is very useful for starting bowels or working in dryer wood.
I haven't tried any chip carving or such but there appears to be a lot of inexpensive knives for that online.
The axe can be harder, you can buy a good Gransfors Bruks carving axe and be set, but I just took a nice hatchet I had a sharpened it with a flat-ish bevel using a file and diamond stones. So long as it is sharp it works just fine for my skill level. If it doesn't I can just hit the bandsaw to cut out my shapes.
The think the biggest thing to buy/learn is sharpening and getting that system setup for yourself as this craft really relies on sharp tools. I thought I had a sharp knife till I got the Mora 106 and it was amazing how much that knife changed my carving.
I already had a good set of course/fine/xtra fine diamond blades but the super fine sand paper from Hewn and Hone (google them) works very well for getting that super sharp finish you need. Also using the strop material and compound they sell. The sandpaper will last a long time, and is easy to replace. Practice as much as you can on the "cheap" tools you get, you can always buy another knife and as you get better probably will want some of the awesome forged knives that are online!

Bohler M390 is The All Round Star that Shines in this Category and is Swedish Too :-))) A Slightly shorter Bushcraft Black Design Would Be Great and much More Appealing To Many Than A Folding EDC Knife!.

In sweden you don´t use folding knives for carving so I think you will have to wait a looong while for them to produce those.
