It seems obvious that it will be able to 3D scan a room at low res in real-time, then high res when the 3D video is post processed with photogrammetry. And you’ll be able to design cabinetry, etc. in 3d. As someone with an architectural background, I see this as the greatest design tool since the advent of AutoCAD in the 1980s.
It’s not merely a VR headset. It’s a standalone spatial computer.

I think comparing the headsets with a TV was a really bad comparison, the headset will allow so much more than a TV and you can have a TV any size you want and many of them at once for productivity, and much more immersive,
About using the headsets in family moments I agree but I think you'll have the options to take the 3D pictures without having the headset on, you don't need to wear it all the time only when you want it...
And indeed this is just the first version, soon they will become smaller and most likely you'll have the option to connect those headsets with other people around you and have a shared virtual reality experience,

I suspect that the next Iphone PRO models coming out will have 3D cameras that create VR and AR content best viewed in the Vision Pro. As well, I think there's a lot of room for Instagram or Facebook or CZcams to have a "VR" version, where this 3D content will be shared by not just your friends and family, but content creators as well. The content can be viewed in 2D as well, but content made for VR will be highlighted in this version of the app. Simple idea that really adds a lot of value to the EXPERIENCE of wearing the headset.
I also expect the Lidar sensor to improve on the next Pro models of the iphone, and maybe an official photogrammetry app (like Polycam 3D) that lets you save 3D models... and, for example, you can add your 3D model of your friend's face to their contact on your phone etc. By leaning into this on the iPhone, they are also adding to the value of having the headset which will let you look at these things in full 3D, life size.

There’s always pushback when something revolutionary is revealed. The car, talking pictures, personal computers for home use, and now the top AR headset in the industry. Just because previous attempts have failed, doesn’t mean that this didn’t get it right. Healthy skepticism is good, but never be afraid to admit that something is good. As for the price, most expected nearly twice that much, and for all that Vision Pro does, the price makes sense.

      @ali-silvester-balarabe Před rokem +2

I totally agree with you. Even the price is not that high when you compare this headset with its real competition like HoloLens ($4000) or Varjo XR-3 ($6500) which it beats. This is not really a consumer device but presented in a consumer-friendly manner. It's killer apps haven't been written yet. It's like, would you pay $2000 for a MacBook Pro just to use Notes, Calendar, iMessage, Safari and Calculator? This is good enough (not a gimmick) to be used by designers, engineers and doctors in a totally new way of using a computer. The hardware has matured. The question now is will developers write the software. I think now they will.

soldered-in? It's easily removeable. You can swap the batteries so you always have a charged one -- you couldn't do that if the battery was internal. As well, a battery running out of juice is one of the main people replace their phones. Having an easily replaceable battery is a major bonus. Having the heat and weight of the battery off your face is a secondary benefit, imo.

Most of the bulk is the custom face-pad. When you remove that it's barely thicker than a phone. The face-pad is kind of important since it needs to fit comfortably AND block out all incoming light. For AR glasses there's the dream of regular sunglasses.. but VR requires light-blocking. I don't think this device is REALLY intended to be worn when you're out and about anyway.. it's for wearing at specific times, like on a flight or when you're working out, or watching a movie. In those instances, the bulk of the device isn't really a huge issue, imo. But, I'm sure you're right that they'll continue to find ways to shrink and make the device better for different situations.

As someone who works form home and doesn't see much of colleagues, I can see this taking conference calls to another dimension. If my colleagues are also earing such a headset and we're in a virtual office space, we can sit at our virtual desk and see and hear what others are up to.
Take this to a personal level, watching a movie at home, I can sit in my living room and watch the same movie on the same screen as family on the other side of the world. In a virtual living room we can watch the movie - or the football game - as though we're in the same room.
I would agree though, kids need to see their parents faces. covering the face is a bad idea. Seeing parents engrossed in their phone when they should be engaging with their kids is not a good look.
And how do we keep track of a teen in a virtual headset? When it's common place for parents, it's a natural progression for kids / teens to learn the skill. With a phone, it's easy enough to see what's on the screen. No so easy on a headset.

Bridget, seriously? Was this click bait?....I'd expect more insight from you about the long term prospects not just the short term impact....I think you are being wayyyy too harsh by emphasizing dystopian so much. Apple is clearly innovating here - in 1984 we got GUI and Mouse interface through the intro of Macintosh which within 5-6 years become mainstream with Windows 95. Now EVERYONE in the world uses it. Spatial computing is a not just a revolutionary step, but rather an evolutionary step, and this is just V1. In fact, its a really polished V1 from nearly every reviewer that I’ve seen that has tried it (and there are many). I wouldn’t suggest seeing this as a replacement for all day use, or mobile (not at home) use, but I could easily see this replacing IPAD (for example) as the main consumption device at home. I don’t think that is far fetched. Also Apple is playing smart by opening up its own App ecosystem of 2D apps that are useable in a spatial environment quite nicely. But the real power will be short-burst 3D immersive experiences that will harness the power and provide all kinds of consumer and business with great use cases. Also ,why are you so annoyed by the dad shooting a 3D movie? Like you said, it could easily be used for special occasions - wouldn’t it be NICE to bring 3D video experiences to the consumer level. I could see lots of examples of shooting my dog or other situations in 3D that would be awesome to watch in the future in a big spatial wide screen. Ultimately, its up to us to let tech rule our life or keep life in balance. But just pushing back on innovation for fear of a dystopic future or the unknown is crazy. Let me summarize. Anytime there is a disruption in tech, many pessimists (generally older) tend to find reasons to be haters. History has shown this in my lifetime, e.g. there have always been many nay-sayers of disruption with BluRay DVD, streaming- music services (e.g. Napster), wearables (smartwatches), touch based interfaces, home based AI (Siri and Amazon Echo), and so much more. Yet most end up finding great scenarios for use and become mainstream over time. This is a moment to embrace the new tech and look forward with optimism on the possibilities. Otherwise, you’d be stuck reviewing newer emojis on IPhone or something that has no significant impact on our future. Lastly, it ISN’T natural to type looking at a physical piece of glass (on our desk). Spatial is the future. This is V1. Thank you Apple for going BIG - we need more innovators and less nay-sayers and pessimists that always find why things will not work. Embrace innovation and disruption- always. Expect long long lines for this product. One more point. Though there was nothing in-factual about what you shared, I just felt your entire sarcastic tone was filled with negativity and pessimism. There are so many positives from innovation to enhance our well being, embrace those , don’t’ fear change, and its on you to keep your life in balance. Just as an FYI, I have my own California tech company and have represented all kinds of disruptive tech from the Silicon Valley for 25+ years now.

For me the only useful use of this tech is actually, using it for reading scientific papers, writing, coding analyzing data… I’m used to work on dual displays which is something difficult to do anywhere… in a library at the lab, on the field, at a cafe on a beach… or jungle but with the vision pro I could have portable displays to work anywhere and this is a problem for me since I tend to loose concentration, needing to rotate between places due to concentration and distraction issues… i could use this to work.

The Vision Pro seems like an Oculus, with high resolution. Resolution matters, but content > resolution. Steve Jobs said "it is not about the bits and the bytes". I feel that is still true. I love my Oculus for the table tennis, and am totally happy with the experience. People who say they want to take a Vision Pro on an aeroplane: spare me, I can barely lug an iPad on a plane. As if you will take a bulky headset in carry on luggage. And after a busy day of work, I can't imagine you will want to be strapped in a headset on a couch for 2 hours. The Oculus focus on activity makes more sense to me, in a sedentary world.

With the reported price, I'm not sure too many everyday people will have these. Yes there will be early adopters, but not many regular people will be able to afford them. Also, if you think Apple's going to lower the price anytime soon, think again. Apple is the poster child of over pricing everything it sells. Over $1000 for a cell phone, $2000 for a laptop, $4000 for a desktop computer, what do you think will happen to these things after a few years. Not a chance will these be affordable to the general public.

This is a high-end product for people with enough money to throw away into a beta project not yet fully actualized with hardware and software. To deter casual consumers who aren’t so tech savvy from getting it and being disappointed in this early-gen product, Apple gave it a high price. You might ask why they’re even releasing it, it’s because Apple still needs to attract developers to the space in order to have apps and find use cases and make improvements to the software stack before they get people who would just never buy it again if the experience was poor. They want to keep sentiment about AR/MR high within the consumer’s mind

Why would I spend my time developing for a $3,500 face worn laptop that so far is just a toy for rich people, when I could spend my time making something with a potential market audience of hundreds of thousands of people or millions of people?
The most successful Apple Vision Pro app may be found on 10,000 units. How much am I supposed to be selling this for to recoup my time!?
What will the non-pro model be like? Will it have the same hardware? Will it be capable of the same things? If I build something that pushes the system the app may fundamentally not be compatible with the next generation of hardware designed to sell to a larger audience.

I think that is the real purpose of the Headset. I don’t think Apple expects is to be like iPhone in sales. It’s something to cause buzz and get more people to Apple Stores, where they may purchase other products or accessories.
The kicker is that Apple has a lot of baller users who will actually buy it. It may out sell all the head sets of Meta, Valve, and Microsoft combined.

  • @grantholmes5661

Your points are valid, however, the attitude of this video shows a lack of understanding with VR. This headset is brand new, a new OS, and a year out. This was a showcase of the technology, which if you are familiar with the VR industry, is now the most capable and high tech. Most of the apps, games, and tools available in VR aren't made by those who make the hardware. Getting this headset out, with all of its capabilities, will allow developers to make some outstanding content, not to mention what this tech will do for other future apple devices. By the time this gets into everyday consumers' hands, there will likely be much more available on/with it, as well as likely other models and price points, as well as the tech integrating into the other products. Let's not forget the lag time of revolutionary technology. Computers and phones didn't become the norm in a single year, I expect the results of this wont fully be realized until years down the road. And if anyone standardizes new tech, it will be Apple.

There are minor cringe things with this headset but this review is more cringe than anything. Sorry but being overtly negative is cringe. This is a preview and most likely not last press release, so I’m sure more will come out and maybe some changes. So some of your gripes might already have answers to before release. Like putting it on to take video. I want to assume you can use your phone and review later on headset. I think it’s a given to take pics and videos natively because of the cameras. Most cameras already have the ability to take 3D content….. As far as killer apps, they’re coming. That’s why the announcement is so early. They’re still working on it’s content. I’m not a developer but I have ideas that I did not see at WWDC, but utilizing that hardware makes my imagination run wild. I’m sure there are like minded developers who will go crazy with this. In short wait till late this year or early next……. I promise you the apps to come will be game and life changing.

in theory you could walk your home with it and it would scan your entire area (i assuming it has a Lidar scan like the Iphone). then you could have a 3d visualization of your house. if an app has access to that 3d mesh somehow (even if only for geometry) then it could generate an entire mix of experiences made specially for you. you could set the environment for achitectural purposes, reimagine how your room would like with other furniture. games where things happen inside the mesh of your room, where enemies avoid the walls for example. you could attach flat screens all over your house (inside the headset) so you dont need to watch tv only on your room, but in the yard, kitchen, etc. new media could be seen in 3d, or 360 and 3d (try watch a 360 vieo, its blured because of the resolution, but maybe with a 4k display gets another level of immersion)
if it can run photoshop, you could paint photos using your hands or maybe with special gloves you could sculpt 3d models. you could aniate things in 3d space by oonly using your hands (first pass) and refining later on pc. you could even animate characters if they allow other developers to make gloves and foot trackers, etc
simulate spatial audio of a show or event.. from a media/3d perspective this tech is amazing. Pricey, but amazing
