Trainspotting looks better now than in 1996. This is a hell of a improvement.
night and day difference. really makes you wonder what the hell these studios are doing when they release products like that OG blu ray. great video and great release from criterion
Shame this has not yet been released in the UK!
This is a bit maddening - a UK film, Trainspotting, can be bought in the US (we have to import) and a film about a US college, The Holdovers, can be bought in the UK but you US people have to import it from us.

Thanks for swaying me towards the Criterion!
Incredible improvement
Excellent video, keep em coming!
Wow!!! What an upgrade. Great comparison.
Fantastic review, Paul. The restoration and return to original color is magnificent. Bravo to Criterion for bringing this back into their collection after 27 years.
Thanks man I appreciate that and yes Criteiron is doing some fantastic work
I freaking love this movie.
Youll love it even more. Watch the comparison Sunday
Wow. Perfect review, thank you!
Thanks man
Love this movie
The 4K looks amazing. glad I upgraded to 4K.
I didn't like the Digi packaging.
Keep up the good work.
Seconded. Criterion needs to overhaul the packaging department!
Thirded. The packaging is a deal-breaker for me unless it was heavily discounted. I'm from the UK so I'm going to hold off for now and hope for a UK release with better packaging.
I remember watching Trainspotting in the cinema multiple times when it came out back in ‘96 and how utterly influential the film went on to be. No, I didn’t immediately move to Scotland and take up heroin but I immediately bought and read Irvine Welsh’s original novel and not only became a huge fan of his work but made Trainspotting a book I read on an almost annual basis. The soundtrack, of course, was iconic and even the poster adorned my wall for over a decade until some bastard tore it (Another story but maybe someday I’ll replace it … though not the friend who tore it!) The sequel, though divisive, was superb in my eyes and a true example of a sequel that took the original and moved forward with the characters instead of just regurgitating what was already there …
… but I digress, I’ve always been frustrated by the Blu-ray release and the unnecessary tint and though it’s watchable I’ve spent many an hour bending various ears on how much better it looked in the cinema and why everything seemed so orange! Then I heard Boyle’s comments and realised my eyes weren’t lying and thus longed for a better release. It’s therefore hugely ironic as well as fucking stupid that the US get the transfer first … not that you folks don’t deserve it but you’d think a huge British film like Trainspotting would get the best treatment in the damn UK. So, I can only hope we eventually get this release as I’m sure we will, through whichever company releases it upon these shores. Just hurry up or I’ll set Begbie on you, ya radge c@#&s!
Never really questioned the orange tint because of the orange poster, branding etc. Really eye-opening seeing how it was intended to be, blimey
unreal upgrade
Absolutely love this movie
I really hope Criterion get the UK licensing at some point, would love to upgrade from my old Blu-ray without paying an arm and a leg for importing.
If you order the 4K from Amazon uk it’s about £2.50 more than it would be for a native UK release
Great movie (saw it here in the UK when it first came out). I have the "Film4" Blu-ray and you're absolutely right ☹there is a reddish tinge over the image and seeing the comparison has made it that much more obvious to me. This movie is now definitely on my "want to upgrade list". I'll hold off for a while though and see if Criterion do a UK release with better packaging (having seen some unboxings I was horrified by Criterion's choice to use that cardboard envelope style for the 4K).
Now in 4k it looks like the color palette from trainspoting 2
I mean it just another film with the criterion release. It's great. I may be watching it again.
Is this the edited / tampered U.S. print, or the uncut U.K. one?
They're calling it the Director's Cut
Wow that BluRay looks awefull 😱
@@thischannelisdeleted Your eyes are broken.
Yeah I agree. My blu ray does not look as bad as that !!
bluray has more detail?
Aside from the whole director's intention, the orange look has been how Trainspotting has looked for almost 30 years now. So for everybody who has seen that movie that look is basically a part of it, it's how Trainspotting looks and therefor feels.
It's a different case with the first Matrix movie. That one was released with more washed out blue tint in cinemas, on VHS and DVD. When the sequels came out they gave the original movie a more greenisch color grading to match the other two movies.
That said, I don't dislike the new color grading at all.
Wow. Here i am realizing I've never actually *seen* the real thing, given that the blu ray master is the only way I've ever watched the movie, be it on physical media or streaming.
I bet they spent a few hours debating whether to do an Atmos mix or not...
Possibly. Who knows
The Blu-ray color timing looks disgusting. The Criterion 4K is a massive improvement.
So they’ve substituted the orange tint for a hint of teal. I thought I was looking at a Studio Canal release. Pass.
Teal? Where do you see teal at? There is no teal
@@TwinFlicksI replied. Did you delete my comment?
No
@@TwinFlicks OK, CZcams being CZcams. To cut it short, I double checked what I was seeing on two colour accurate displays and had the same opinion. I then read the review on a famous Blu-ray site where it’s been given a score of 3.5 out of 5 for video. In it the reviewer states, and I quote, “The two primaries that are affected the most are white and blue. White and variations of white are routinely overwhelmed by light cyan/green. Blues and variations of blue are destabilized or replaced by turquoise.”. It’s clear to see.
@modestyblaise4167 I'm not sure what he's looking at. Can you provide the link? I didnt see that at all. I have also looked at 3 very trustworthy sources digitalbits.com, hidefdigest and dvd beaver they all gave it a 4.5 or a 5. And these guys work in the industry. So idk. But send me the link I'm curious to read it
