HD BR mostly looks better. Film grain is better retained on UHD and blood color is much more realistic on UHD. All other - resolution, tonality, saturation, contrast - better on HD.

I'm from the UK and when I found out that the Eureka release was only a single 4k disc (Eurekas Blu-ray is a two disc set) Immediately checked the Vineger Syndrome site and they were going to put both films onto a single UHD 100 disc but due to concerns about low bit rate and poor image quality Vineger Syndrome decided to release them on two UHD 66 discs and decided to get the Vineger Syndrome release that has better packaging and artwork. And after seeing the image comparisons I made the right decision I have a multiregion blu-ray so I can watch the features.

I'm going to have to give it to Vinegar Syndrome, I loved the Eureka release, but VS just truly looks better in every comparison. The bit rate difference is crazy too! (although makes sense with it being so condensed.)

In my opinion the Vinegar Syndrome looks better.

I watched the two just a few days apart and the 4k is in another world of quality than criterion’s release. Every shot looks like a moving painting on the 4k transfer, where much of the Criterion transfer looks washed out and flat. This set absolutely changes the viewing experience in the best way

I almost bought the Eureka release because I'm a huge fan of the company, and I support their releases as much as I can. When SV press release came out a couple of days later, I examined what each one of them had to offer and decided on VS. I really like these 4k match ups so people can see the differences. Thanks.

This was a movie I rewatched so many times as a kid, and remains a favorite. I would rent it every time I had a friend sleepover if they hadn’t seen it, some got it, others were kinda traumatized like why did you show me this. Great film

While I'm not a fan of AI restoring and any "recreation". I definitely trust James Cameron on giving deeply accurate colors on how underwater should look in The Abyss. It's obvious that old DVD definitely lost lot of hidden colors, especially on small items. He went lot of underwater exploring and gained accurate experiences over decades, especially went to titanic underwater in real life many times. I rather go with new 4k recreation for bolder richer colors, instead of the old lesser dvd copy. The abyss seem to be his best recreation out of three. Only True Lies is badly affected, while Aliens survived decently on 4k somehow. Aliens is mostly blu-ray upscale unfortunately, but I do keep both old blu-ray and 4k. Especially James Cameron's 4k recreations is better choice for modern viewers who are not into old films much.

Yeah, 4k UHD definitely has better colors and brighter easier to see sharper details. The only thing that Spanish blu-ray won was the completely lack of ugly AI mess.

Huh? Looking at your comparisons, with the 4K on top, it is confusing, the Blu-ray looks better. Do you have them backwards? 4:04 is an example where the bottom image appears sharper and with arguably better colors. I’ve noticed this in previous videos, such as your review of American Werewolf in London, where the bottom frame looks better and sharper than the top, which is labeled 4K. I’m viewing via the CZcams app on an AppleTV 4K on a Samsung 4K OLED tv so I should be seeing whatever needs seeing… right? Edit. I realize that the image changes frame by frame, and the only way to find the exact frame is to find a reference point and count the individual frames from there, but that can be difficult to do.

Oh boy...people did not like this one! Oh well.

Great review as always.After being somewhat put off by the heavy grain on the title sequence,when the actual film starts it wasn't as noticeable and the HDR shines.I had it on digital and thought it was sharp but going back to it and comparing the 4k is really good.

The 4K looks blown out in highlights in some scenes! Detail looks obliterated. Please explain. My QD-OLED TV is in 1440p HDR mode.

So they really haven't been shrink wrapping slips anymore, eh? Disappointing, and will just hope Arrow, or Kino don't follow suit. For the price point it's pretty absurd. I get why Vestron does it, and Vinegar Syndrome does a great job with packaging. Also, I noticed their steelbooks are shrinkwrapped. Thank God, they at least still do that.

No, the Blu ray looks absolutely horrible. It is neither crisp nor clear. The previously released DVD (which I also own) already looks bad as a DVD. I then purchased the Blu ray, hoping it would be a vast improvement. Well, the Blu ray looks no better, perhaps even worse on Blu ray. I own several of James Stewart's westerns on Blu ray (along with about a thousand other Blurays). Visually, this Blu ray copy look worse than a decent VHS copy. The video clips above are about how it actually looks on Blu ray. The single worst Blu ray I own visually speaking. Honestly, it doesn't matter whether you buy the DVD or Blu ray, they both look simply horrible. You have been warned.

I'd rather watch horror films on VHS or DVD. HD makes a lot of horror movies look terrible. Too much detail ruins the old special effects makeup and props. Not every horror movie looks bad in HD, but a lot of them do.

Nice! I got the Matinee 4K recently myself along with the poster. Only drawback is that the actual MANT short film is missing from this 4K release so I'm holding onto my Arrow Video bluray which maintains it along with some exclusive bonus features that were never included on Shout's original bluray release.
