In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, we’ll talk about the use of the GBU-24A/B Paveway III laser-guided bomb with the Viper. Like the GBU-10, the GBU-24 also uses a 2,000 lbs. class warhead, but it has a much more advanced autopilot and larger control surfaces that allow a greater standoff range of greater than 11 miles when dropped high and fast. Lower and slower will result in a reduction in range of course. It also uses the BLU-109/B penetrator warhead that is effective against hardened targets.
The bomb can be carried on stations 3, 4, 6, and 7.
Once dropped, the GBU-24A/B can pitch up, termed a bump up, to climb and increase range.
Like all laser-guided bombs, it will require laser designation of the target from your own targeting pod or a remote laser-designation source.
We will first select Air-to-Ground mode from the ICP. On the Stores Management System, or SMS page, we can see that we have two GBU-24s selected at OSB 6. Also, on the right side of the page, we can cycle between four different release profiles at OSB 7. At OSB 8 we can release the GBU-24 as a single or in pairs. At OSB 10 is the Ripple Release Internal. We’d only use this when releasing more than one GBU-24 at a time, and it would be used to set the release time between drops from 50 to 500 milliseconds.
On the left side, RBS at OSB 20 and Mode at OSB 21 are not functional due to lack of public information. From OSB 18, you can cycle the fuze between Nose, Tail, and Nose Tail. Below that at OSB 17 you can select the Arming Delay with successive pressing of the OSB to cycle through the pre-set options in the center of the page.
Along the top at OSB 2, you select between Pre-Planned (PRE), in which the delivery is based on the current Sensor Point of Interest that could be a Steerpoint, Offset Point, A-G FCR designation, TGP designation, etc., or Visual (VIS) mode in which you can slew the designation box on the HUD and press TMS Forward to set the designation point.
As a laser-guided bomb, we’ll need to make sure that the bomb seeker is looking for the same frequency as the designating laser. Press the K on the keyboard to view the bomb seeker code. In this case, 1688. To check in reference to the targeting pod, press LIST on the ICP, then M-SEL, and then 5 for Laser. We can see that the TGP will be designating at 1688. If you wish to self-designate, these must match.
More options are available on the Control page at OSB 5. Alongside OSB 6, is the estimated weapon Time of Flight, this cannot be edited. At OSB 9, we can input the range at which the Range Cue is displayed on the HUD as a small circle. Let’s set it to 8 miles. Note the indication changes on the HUD. The desired release angle can be set at OSB 10. We’ll do a level release with an angle of zero.
The SMS page is set up, let’s explore the HUD now. Because we are in PRE mode, we can see the box and dot that indicates our target SPI location and the Azimuth Steering Line, or ASL, that provides us azimuth steering information to the target. We want to fly the aircraft such that the ASL intercepts the SPI indication. Along the ASL is Release Cue that appears as a thicker horizonal bar. As we approach our maximum release point, the Release Cue will march down the ASL until it intercepts the Flight Path Marker. Prior to the two reaching each other, hold down the weapon release button and the bomb will automatically release when the two symbols coincide.
Along the right side of the HUD is the GBU-24 dynamic launch zone. It is indicated as a 20-mile scale with a bar and “20” at the top. To the left side of the DLZ is a caret that indicates current range to the target. As we close on the target, the caret will move down the DLZ.
Further down the DLZ, we have an open bracket to the right, and this the current range of the GBU-24 based on current aircraft flight conditions. The closed bracket below that is the planned range based on the inputted SMS data.
With everything set up, don’t forget to arm the laser.
At the bottom of the data block in the bottom right of the HUD, we can see the estimated Time to Release. Once the bomb is released, it counts down to estimated impact at zero. - Hry
CORRECTION: We are modeling the GBU-24A/B, not the GBU-24/B. This is another advantage over the GBU-10 in that the GBU-24A/B includes the BLU-109/B penetrator warhead that can defeat hardened targets.
Is this fix going to be applied to all aircraft carrying the 24 in game? I ask because Liberation OCA RWY missions require 6k lbs of standard ordnance or 2k lbs of penatration ordnance to destroy the runway. Right now, the 24 is not modeled on the DCS back end as a penatration bomb like the GBU-31(V3) is and this requires three impacts to take out a runway.
Hey Wags, I downloaded the F16 module and love it. Recently updated my standalone version of DCS world, unaffiliated with Steam anymore.
Having trouble, I do not see any GBU-24 Paveway available for the F-16, not in the rearming screen or even the Mission Editor, but the F/A-18 has them. Is GBU-24 currently working for F16 modules? Thank you for any help!!
@@sschreck are you on open beta??
@@sschreck yes, in the open beta.
I don’t know if I am on the open beta but I do not use steam anymore for DCS world. How do I get the open beta without using steam? Thank you for your help
More importantly, will it be possible to perform an inverted ridge crossing to drop via buddy lase on a 3m target followed by a max g pull out (sts) without dying?
The question is, will you get back to the carrier?
Some one saw Maverik top gun 😁
Yes.
Real men CCIP eyeball it. Use the Force.
Depends of the pilot.
For me there is no better instructor than Matt!
Will the auto lase function be brought in for the F-16C, instead of having to hold the lase button down once the bombs are dropped?
"What was Wags talking about?"
"I don't know I was looking at the terrain"
The Falcon keeps on getting better and better - I spent last weekend practicing with the new bomb, and am now feeling fairly confident with it. An awesome upgrade , thanks to all of you !
How are you able to access the GBU 24? I recently updated DCS and I can’t find it anywhere for the F 16 but it is available for the F 18.
@@sschreck Are you using open beta or stable. I don't know if it is out on stable yet but it definitely was in the open beta when I flew yesterday.
This fidelity in this map looks absolutely amazing 🤩
This one of the best things added to the Viper. I am nearly in tears😅
Seeing these gorgeous Chilean air force liveries in Wagner's videos makes me happy =).
Thanks for everything guys, DCS just keeps getting better and better.
Cheers from Chile👍
Weeeeena ctm!
ED doing good work. I don't even have the F-16 but I watch them anyway!
You should get it, it's fun!
This was something I was looking forward to for a long time, and you guys did a fantastic job with it. Keep it up!
Did they only offer the GBU 24 to the F 18? I did the most recent update for a standalone and tried to arm up with GBU 24 and the F 18 was the only one that had it as an option. Has it not been released for the F16 yet?
Wonderul video as always. Many thank Matt, great stuff 👍🏻. Kind regards Nick
Thanks for the tutorial!
Big bada boom. Can’t wait to try it out.
Hey quick question for the group: When I tell an AI wingman with HARMs to engage air defenses, he’ll do a 180 and extend 40 miles or so back then go for a max range shot. Is there anything I can do in mission editor to get them to engage directly when told?
Great livery choise!
It was a relief to see that Wags don't take C-130s as evil anymore. He decided to go after IL-76s this time.
my theory is that he was dropping bombs on c-130s to hint at a c-130 module. 😆
Sweet! Thanks Wags :)
Y’all should add an option to set bomb laser codes from the rearm-refuel GUI.
Wags, any news on CNTL page implementation for the F16 JSOW? Being able to adjust the burst height etc. would make it much more fun to use, especially with the current binary ground unit damage model. Its been a while since it was added, so I find it strange the weapon settings do not exist, especially since they are already functional with the F18. At least I have sorely been missing the ability to guarantee kills on a few units with a lower burst height, rather than to always spread the bomblets wide with the default 1500ft burst height, which usually nets a few yellow health bars at best, even again non-armored targets like SAM sites.
Looks so cool this F 16

Chilean f-16 with the lone star!
FYI, been having issues with the Viper dropping laser bombs on moving or stationary sea targets. For some reason, it doesn't want to be guided by the laser. But after I bombed a land-based target using an LGB first, and then went back to sea targets it magically worked. Possible bug.
No problem here. Please use our support forum.
@@MattWagner Can you elaborate a bit on the questions Sky rider posted?
2. Does the bomb behave any differently than Paveway II? What new autopilot functions have you implemented? Does the bomb pitch up or have a different flight path?Does the release angle setting have any influence on this?
3. What does the RNG CUE do or influence? How do you know what value to set?
4. Why did the 2 bombs impact with the RP setting distance? Why aren’t they going for the same laser spot?
2. Please listen again to the intro, this is explained regarding "bump up" and extended range.
3. Whatever you want it to be, such as a pull up point, arming point, etc.
4. No, but it's still a bit WIP.
So with 0 data on the differing gbu-24 modes is that the same reason for the 18s 24s as well?
4:55 As somebody who has self-bombed multiple times, I felt this comment.
Are we going to get the GBU-24E or GBU-24B Vaccum or Penetrator "Bunker Buster" variants?????
It’s been a great year to be an all around DCS fan. Way to go, Wags!
Love the skin !
Awesome video, Wags! Any chance we will get an auto-lase function for LGBs like in the Hornet?
Yes
@@MattWagner Excellent news! Thank you for all of the outstanding DCS content and for giving us these amazing modules to fly.
Everytime I strap into a Viper, Hornet, or Tomcat in DCS with VR, I'm transported to a magical place that genuinely brings me happiness and excitement. So grateful.
@@MattWagner hey wags isn't RP release pulse not how far the bombs should be spaced apart? So RP with a value of 1 is a single release pulse sent to a station RP of 2 would be 2 and so on and so on. Those bombs should follow the same laze'd point and not space themselves out.
I see what you did there. "Cleeeeever giiiiirl"
Wags, is auto lasing an IRL feature of the block/tape Viper we have? I haven't seen anything in the roadmap.
Daddy Waggy mentioned in another comment here that auto lase should be coming.
New FLIR there at the end?
Is that RP setting designed to offset a laser target point for this weapon as it seemed that the second bomb hit the building nearby?
Good question, I noticed the same. It looked like the second bomb didn't track the laser or something, there's no reason it would hit the building behind the IL-76 if the plane is being lased and both bombs are using the same code.
@@TLTeo saw this with many other paired bomb laser drops. dont drop 2.
Yeah that caught my eye as well. I have yet to see this happen with any other LGB in DCS... Possibly one of the new more advanced "autopilot" functions on the GBU-24 vs. GBU-10? The second bomb knows that "this spot is lased, and i'm supposed to hit 50 feet beyond"? (Though 50 feet is on 15 meters, and the IL-76 is like 45+ meters long, so the bomb missed that spacing by miles...)
I have no idea what they should do in reality.
Am i wrong or they working in a new impact explosion effect?
You are not wrong.
Hi Wags could you please explain what is the range cue used for exactly ? I get that the value is dependant of the flight profile and probably determined beforehand, but I don't understand what is it for. Thanks, best
Whatever you want it to be like pull up distance, arming distance, abort range, etc.
There is one thing I realy have to say. I always thougt that the US Navy Guys are the cool ones, Yes in the cold war. But in these days the USAF for me looks like the are the silent heros. I felt in love with the Tomcat and Hornet very early in my life. I underestimated the F-16 and F-15's a long time and was impressed by their capabilities. Thanks to ED and 3rd Party's to give me/us the opportunity to fly this birds.
No, you were right in your first thoughts. Imagine doing this type of attack, dodging SAMs, dog fighting, all that combat stuff but then having to find a ship out to sea in the dark, in bad weather and having to land on a moving, rolling target. You probably are out of fuel and have to do an air to air refueling just to make it back to the ship. Airforce has none of that. Naval Aviators are considered the top of the food chain for a reason.

Hey Matt. I have a problem. I cannot get the GBU 10/12 to release off the aircraft. I have everything set. Laser on. Master arm on. CCRP mode.
I believe that the “release angle” is the main culprit here. When I click on the CNTL option and then click on the REL ANG … it reads out as “Enter LOFT REL ANG” . It does not even give me the option to make the numerals negative as it does not have the NEG osb at the top right, just like in this video.
When I never had the REL ANG active, the GBUs worked perfectly fine. How do I get rid of it all together? It doesnt give me the option to remove it. Right now my LOFT REL ANG is 0.

Neither would be accurate for this F-16C version.

What is the keybind for firing the laser after release?
The trigger.
Wags, love the 16 and the work ED has done, but is anyone looking at the radar performance?
In my experience in single player I can lock up a target quiet easily beyond 40 miles, but in multiplayer its almost impossible to obtain a lock either quickly or consistently unless it's well within 20 miles.
I know the 16 radar is not as powerful in comparison to other Western radars, but surely the differences between single player and multiplayer mode is cause for investigation?
In MP, many players will run around on the deck and the radar will not be as effective with ground clutter. No difference between SP and MP.
@@MattWagner I am more than happy to accept ground clutter is something that is very real but I do find that targets at altitude with no jamming and not notching are extremely hard to lock up (not that I mind the challenge).
Its something I'm noticing, but in no way am I having a go at ED at all.

whats the difference between nose, tail, and nose/tail fusing
For penetration purposes
For a bridge, use nose. A hangar, use tail
Nose will explode instantly it hit, tail will explode when it penetrates into target, both ensure it explodes if one detonator fails
Is that the South Atlantic map?
Yes :)
Does NOSE fuze means the bomb will be fuzed at nose impact and TAIL fuze means the bomb will be fuzed when the tail reaches the penetrated surface?
it means that it will have a fuze in the nose, tail, or both. The fuzes can function different ways and some let the pilot select it. the fuzes can detonate in the air, at impact, or after penetration. It depends on what fuze is used and it's settings. Nose selects the fuze in the front of the bomb, and tail is for the fuze in the back. NSTL selects them both to function according the settings on the fuzes or pilot option. The fuzes are needed to set the bomb off. The bomb will not detonate without the fuze. Also, in this version of the GBU-24 that is in the video, it's the 24A/B version which is for penetration. It doesn't have a nose fuze.
@@wesschaffran9088 So if NOSE fuze is selected in this case, the bomb won't be detonated? And is the arming deley option is to control the arming time of these two fuzes?
@@YYCH2 I"m not sure exaclty what the IRL a/c settings are for the penetrator bombs if they even have the nose selection available. If the fuze doesn't function, then yes, the bomb will not detonate. I was a munitions specialist in the USAF for over 20 years. I built A LOT of bombs. We did have some duds and some during real world combat missions. It is not a good thing and we get grilled on why it happend. There are several factors on why it can happen. For the arming delay, you are correct. It is the time after release that the fuzes will arm themselves to be able to function.
@@wesschaffran9088 Can't believe an expert is answering. There is an EFUZE option in the honet. Does that mean the eletronic fuze will give the signal to the mechanical fuze once the bomb reaches the detonation parameters?

What if I wanna change the code?
Then use the kneeboard to do so when on the ground.
@@MattWagner Hi Matt .... I know it's a little artificial .... but is there any chance that we will be able to change the code in a "Hot Jet" on the ground? Or is it going to stay with the "IRL" option that the jet has to be "Cold". Many Thanks for all the love the Viper is getting .... Cheers.
@@ozcougar2133 IRL the code is changed via screw terminals on the bomb itself, I don't see a reason why it couldn't be done, when we can do hot rearming.
Though personally, I'd rather the laser code go in the new bomb configurator they're working on.
@@OliverMiles98 Understood with regards to the 'IRL' aspects as I have a background in this area .... so simulating it via the F10 Ground Crew 'Hot Rearm' option to set the code when selecting the ordinance would be a nice workaround.
Also, agree completely with your comment about integrating this into the new bomb configurator as well. Cheers
Good GOD those massive things look hilarious on such a small plane. lol
How do you change the Laser code the bombs will be scanning for?
On the kneeboard page I showed before flight.
LIST Button
No, that is the PRF the laser will designate.
@@MattWagner Thanks!
you need to change it on the ground and only with the engine off, I don't know why since the rest of the aircrafts like the f18 and a10 can change it magically from the mfd while flying.
At least it would be nice to have the posibility to change it on the ground with the engine running since it has to be changed from the bomb itself.
It would be nice to have these types of disparities sorted out.
