- Kokoroko present their first-ever official music video, a beautiful short film soundtracked by 'Ewà Inú,' 'Home', and 'Age of Ascent' from the band’s debut album (released August 2022 on Brownswood Recordings).
The film is directed by the multi-disciplined filmmaker, writer & video artist, Akinola Davies Jr.
It re-imagines the music as a soundtrack to a triptych of interconnected stories set in Makoko (sometimes known as the Venice of Africa), a community originally settled by fishermen, excluded from official census records, and under threat of demotion.

Congratulations Shirley to you and the band for a tremendous debut album and this debut video set in a most notorious part of Lagos and for showcasing a mostly "unseen" side of life in Lagos, Africa's most populous city, with it's own "hidden" beauty!!... Aaagh... To end the video, my favourite track on the album.. "Age of Ascent"... An Afro-Jazz masterpiece!!!
I used to visit here back when my grandma lived here before she lost her house in a fire. It’s so intriguing living on a floating village. The smoke filled air seem to never disappear, it left a constant fog of smoked fish and burnt woods.
My dad and his siblings grew up on this floating village, he worked so hard to leave that life behind and moved to the city where he made himself a family
Yet ever so often, whenever I stare at the floating village in the distance every-time I pass on the 3rd mainland bridge, it feels like a part of me is still there.
Maybe one day I’ll finally go back to visit but I know for sure the floating village is part of my history.

Wonderful story! I Appreciate these words in a way that you may not be able to imagine! My daughter visited a village similar to this one during her internship in Western Africa and when she told me about these floating villages it struck me DEEPLY and I’ve thought of them since but never matched my idea with the truth of what it’s like to be there. One Love from Northern California, USA!!
