Everyone mentions how beautiful this game is visually, but almost nobody talks about how great it is in audio, not only is the music wonderful, but also the punches have such an impact that they are an auditory orgasm, few fighting games I have heard that they have such a sense of satisfaction when connecting a blow. No doubt the great effort SNK put into this game ... it's a shame that SNK didn't have Rose's wealth and what makes it sadder that the game sold so little. But I have to say that, although I liked KOF XIII since it came out, I had not realized all the effort that was put into the game.
For example, at first I did not like the idea of pre-battle dialogues because they had replaced pre-battle animations, but when I was watching Max's stream I fell in love with Terry's phrases, like when he tells Andy to fuck with Mai (5:58), or when he tells K to stop being an edgelord (15:28), but my favorite phrase is when he pretends he is deaf because he is already fed up with Mai asking him where Andy is because she is thirsty (19:08).
But I also have to say that the designs of Athena and Yuri in this game are my favorites by far, call me weeb or whatever you want but the sprites of this game perfectly represent the fact that they 2 are cute girls, and if you tell me that Yuri is 20 years old and that is why she shouldn't look like that under that logic, she shouldn't behave in the way she always has been. In general I love the designs of all the girls in this game ... with the exception of Mai's forehead.
By the way, although Takuma's stance for many people seems absurd has a motive, I read that it is a reference to the manga/anime Baki the Grappler. By the way, we need the Lore Legacy KOF for Max to learn from the history of other characters in the franchise.

Here is King of Fighters XIII~ This is the final game in the "Tales of Ash" Saga. Unlike the NESTS Saga, this Saga did away with the established gameplay style for this entry (the Tag-Team mechanic from 2003 and XI) and went back to what people love about KOF. After the beta version- Er, I mean, KOF XII, SNK knew they had to deliever the goods with the next entry and they sure did.
An interesting plot point about the final chapter of the "Ash Saga" is that the invitations to KOF are all sent by "R"! Sound familiar? "R" was Rugal back in '94 and '95! But it is not "Rugal" who sent these invitations but his daughter, Rose Bernstein... who is actually under the control of Those from the Past! Oh noooo! (This detail is seen in Adelheid's ending in KOF XI, fyi)
    - Would you believe that KOF XII actually had an English Dub? There seemed to be plans of an English Dub for this game as well, but they were scrapped. Similarly to Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, it seems the reception for the Dub's voices weren't very well received anyhow.
    - This game has an IOS version. Interesting, right~?
    - This game has a "Story Mode"... Sorta like the story modes in BlazBlue and Persona 4 Arena + Ultimax... However I know VERY little about the story mode, honestly. All I know is there's a possibility to have a "Bad Ending" and Shion appears in the final chapters, having escaped Magaki's Dimensional Rift apparently.
    - Following the events of this game, this created a timeline where... This Saga never happened? I think it never happened following KOF XIV's events, but thanks to Ash's temporal actions, it HAS created Verse and thus caused the return of many deceased characters like Rugal, Krizalid, Igniz, and even Orochi (though he's not a threat due to the lack of a host body)... Oh and Ash is back despite supposedly being erased from time itself following this game's events. Looks like he screwed up big time. (Dammit Ash! XD)
    - The sprites in KOF XII and KOF XIII took a VERY LONG TIME TO MAKE. They were first 3D Models turned into 2D sprites. Such a process is very similar to how BlazBlue handles their sprites. This wasn't a cheap game to make, at all.
    - The sprite quality came at a cost. Some characters planned for this game were unable to make it like Geese Howard and ESPECIALLY Adelheid. Geese's remixed theme song is still in the game, however. Adelheid is a big disappointment since he's not only the "second main protagonist" after Ash in this Saga but he has incredible plot significance in this game due to his sister, Rose, being under the control of Those from the Past (He is in the background of the Sky Noah stage at least).
    - Interestingly enough, concept art for the sprites in KOF XII shown that the original outfits of Ralf, Clark, Leona, and Elisabeth were intended for the sprites but were changed. Athena also looked MUCH different than she does in KOF XII and XIII. She looks rather "chibi like" which is to simulate her original appearance in Psycho Soldier, but the concept art shown that she looked "normal". In fact, one of the posters for XII not only showed the "normal" Athena but Leona in her original outfit.
    - Ralf and Clark look eerily similar in this game... though they are sort of calling back to their original look in Ikari Warriors.
    - Just like Athena, Sie Kensou's appearance is a callback to his look in Psycho Soldier. Even though this look does not come back in KOF XIV, his fighting stance is the same as from this game.
    - King's outfit is a callback to her look from Art of Fighting 1 and 2... Except you can cleaaarly tell that King is a girl unlike last time. lol
    - It's been a long time, but the original Woman Fighter's Team from KOF '94 has returned! (Mai, King, Yuri) Same goes for the Fatal Fury Team (Terry, Andy, Joe), the Art of Fighting Team (Ryo, Robert, Takuma), the Japan Team (Kyo, Benimaru, Daimon) and the Psycho Soldier Team (Athena, Kensou, Chin).
    - Hwa Jai and Raiden, characters who haven't been playable for a while (Hwa Jai especially) return in this game in order to bring back "unexpected characters". Plotwise, they trick Kim Kaphwan into believing that they are still evil so that they can enter the KOF tournament instead of Chang and Choi. Obviously, Raiden and Hwa Jai have reformed after Fatal Fury 1's events, but they really wanted to show that they still got it as fighters.
    - There are Console exclusive characters in this game in the form of Billy Kane (the Mid-Boss of Arcade Mode) and Saiki, the faux Final Boss... However you play as Saiki's "normal form" instead of his Final Boss form. Other DLC characters include NESTS Style Kyo, Classic Iori, and (SERIOUS) Mr. Karate. Strangely enough, Saiki and (SERIOUS) Mr. Karate aren't in the IOS version.
    - Billy Kane has shaved his head and now wears overralls. This is his exact look in Fatal Fury 1. Fittingly enough, playing as Billy, Hwa Jai, and Raiden gets a special ending screen featuring them along with other Fatal Fury 1 bosses~ Neato~!
    - In Arcade Mode, it is very much possible not being able to fight Saiki and Evil Ash at the end. If your points suck ass, then you'll get a "Bad Ending" showing that Saiki is displeased with his "allies" for helping him. However, he knows he can simply wind back time and does just that.
    - With Iori's powers missing following KOF XI's events (thanks Ash), he now fights without his flames. His fighting style is actually pretty similar to Freeman's from Garou: MOTW. Geez, KOF characters love stealing the moves of Fatal Fury characters; Vanessa stole Rick Strowd's fighting style and Iori stole Freeman's. I'm kidding, haha. But in all seriousness, unlike Chizuru, who was discourged from fighting following the lost of her powers and injuries, Iori still participates in KOF alongside Mature and Vice who are mysteriously around despite dying by Iori's hands (unintentionally, at least) waaaaay back in KOF '96.
    - This game has many alternate colors... and a lot of them are cool! One of Raiden's alternate colors is more of a costume change! It gives him his Big Bear look! You can even have Kyo dress up like his high school outfit too! And some of the alternate colors reference various characters from various franchises throughout the world. Kula can sorta look like C.C. from Code Geass and Ryo can look like Ryu and Shin Akuma for example~
    - If you switch the music, you can either play older themes from past KOF games or rearrangements of certain songs. For example, Billy's other theme is a remix of Geese's theme (since he was intended to be playable). You'll also hear "Queen" (Elisabeth's Team theme from KOF XI) if you switch the music for Elisabeth, Duo Lon, and Shen Woo.
    - Some of the game's stages are remixed versions of KOF XII's stages. Others are exclusive to this game. And others are remixed classic stages from past KOF games like the Japan and Psycho Soldier Team's Stage from KOF '96, the Rival Team Stage from KOF '95, the Sky Noah Stage from KOF 2003, the Clock Tower Stage from Fatal Fury 2, and the Temple and Dojo Stage from Art of Fighting 1 and 2 respectively.
    - There are MULTIPLE character cameos in the Stages~! You can find the likes of Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown, Wanted Posters of Yamazaki, Rugal, Fio from Metal Slug, Wolfgang Krauser and Lilly Kane, and many more~!
This was reposted from the KOF XIII Rate the Super video.

A lot of these actors have been these characters for almost 20 years since KoF '94.

MegaNinten 007 definitely a callback/fanservice game as every one of its characters was a returning fighter (except Raiden and Hwa Jai who are new strictly to the KOF series, but are still Fatal Fury OGs. also Saiki, but he just went from non-playable boss to head/palette swapped Ash clone.) Contrast that with KOF XIV which has considerably more newcomers. But with the budget that went into XIII's amazing sprites I can see why they'd play it close with the familiar roster picks.

Looks great, plays great, but what I like most about this game is the arcade/story mode where every character has unique dialogue depending on who is fighting who. A short conversation prior to the match gives the characters so much character. Kula in particular has some pretty funny dialogue. I'm really glad Max got to see the Terry vs. Mai one. XIV only limited each character to 3 unique conversations. I really hope these conversations make a return in XV where everyone talks to everyone!

    • @maninredhelm
      @maninredhelm Před 4 lety +18

But XIV's dialogue was voice-acted with animated model movements during the conversation, and the game had way more characters. They'd have to go back to still frames, which would be weird in a 3D game, and use text only to try to insert 1700 conversations, one for each combination of 58 characters (including mirrors). Whereas it was "only" 465 conversations for KoF13 because the roster is much smaller. I'd honestly rather see a return to special pre-fight poses and single lines of special dialogue for a few select opponents than 1700 text conversations that are mostly going to end up being "let's fight hard!" That way it can happen in non-story mode too without slowing down the fight. Only Najd vs. Verse and Billy/Hein vs. Geese have that in 14.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Před 4 lety +4

I also prefer that the old battle intros return instead of those dialogues (supposing i'd have to choose between the both). The dialogues could still exist in some parts of the story mode though. It's a way to somehow bring back both things.

What i mean is: 90s arcade fg's werent interested in taking too long with stories and stuff. Still Kof was exploring narratives in fg's more than any other series in the 90s. 25:00 The guy who kills Saiki in the cutscene, Mukai, is one of the 2 possible bosses of KOF 2003... which you skipped, in fact is the true one. The other possible boss of that game is Rugal's son, Adel, who is also the brother of the girl who organized this tournament (under mental control), Rose, which you asked who she was a few moments before.
Originally Adel was going to be the second protagonist of the saga along with Ash but the idea was discarded (I don't know what were the reasons for that), he was even going to be a playable character in KOF XIII (also Geese was going to be) as in KOF XI, but in the end he was not playable, there are remains in the game data that show what Adel's victory image would have been.

KOF XIII is undoubtedly a great game, but it suffered from a curious phenomenon. What do I mean? On how the game was received in very different ways around the world, the diverse opinions that people have about it and how they have changed over the years. For many followers of Max because they are from English-speaking countries for them this KOF will seem the best of all, because the sprites are beautiful, the music is great, the gameplay is wonderful, but the most important thing is that it was the first KOF of many people from said countries. I also read that KOF XIII came out at a time where Marvel vs Capcom fans were upset with MvC3 and for that reason some of them migrated to KOF XIII.
But before this KOF came out, the franchise was only popular in Latin America, Brazil, Korea, and a bit of Japan and China, and therefore it went quite unnoticed by the rest of the world, fortunately this game began to attract new fans of other countries. However, despite the fact that what I said might suggest that the game was a success, it was quite the opposite, the sprites were extremely expensive to make and the game sold so little that ALMOST caused SNK to go bankrupt again. One of the possible reasons and the most obvious reason why that happened could be that the game has bad netcode.
I have to say that I don't have a favorite KOF since everyone has their good and bad things, besides I'm a person who likes variety. The only ones I really don't like are the 2 games made by Eolith and the only KOF I hate is the hacked bootleg version of one of these 2 games known as KOF 2002 Magic Plus. Why do I mention this? I needed to clarify this because another of my assumptions about the failure of KOF XIII in its beginnings has to do with the diversity that exists in the KOF fandom, finally before I start mentioning my theory I clarify that I don't want to start a fight.
As I said for the majority of KOF fans of English-speaking countries KOF XIII is the best, but for countries where this franchise was already large since its inception it is not, regularly the KOF games that are considered the best in those countries they are KOF 98 and KOF 2002 (the latter was made by Eolith and Playmore). Why? Well, mainly because they have a bigger roster, counting alternate versions of the characters KOF 98 has 51 characters and KOF 2002 has 48 characters, while KOF XIII only has 33 characters, which is not such a small number either. And the fact that some characters lost a lot of their moveset distinction, like Ralf and Clark, didn’t help.
Some will note that the number of characters should be a bit larger in KOF 98 and KOF 2002, that is because I am taking into account the characters that have the official and original versions of those games (the PS2 version in the case of KOF 2002 to be specific) Why am I not taking into account the UM versions of these games since they have more characters? Because, although they are superior versions without a doubt (especially KOF 2002 UM), the fanbase in Spanish-speaking countries doesn’t usually play these versions but the original ones... or in the case of KOF 2002, its hacked bootleg version known as KOF 2002 Magic Plus.
For those who do not know, KOF 2002 Magic Plus is a version of KOF 2002 vanilla that allows you to have infinite super bars in addition to allowing you to play with Omega Rugal (because in the original you couldn’t, add a character to that 48 that I wrote before) among other things, it’s an extremely broken game where you will almost always see the people use the same characters. I've never found that thing fun, but it's extremely popular in my country, Mexico. Obviously, it is not an official KOF game, I even dare to question its legality.
Leaving aside the amount of characters another problem that old KOF fans have with the game is the graphic style, although you don't believe it, because the characters have no realistic proportions like in the previous games. But I have to say while I consider that there are some weird artistic decisions in the new sprites, like Terry but especially Ralf and Clark are too muscular, that Ryo for some reason is always furious, that Kyo shoulders and Mai forehead are a little too wide shoulders, that the legs/pants of some characters look weird, and the creatures of the stage of Brazil are very ugly, in the end I like the graphic style of KOF XIII more.
The last possible factor for which I think that KOF XIII sold very poor (and for which I clarify that I don’t want to start a fight), is that I have noticed that many of the old KOF fans are very easily blinded by nostalgia, and they consider that all the games that came out after KOF 98 or KOF 2002 (and I'm talking about the original versions, not the UM versions) are bad games just because they aren’t the games they played in the arcades. If you don’t believe me read the comments of the Terry Legacy of KOF 2002 UM where there was a considerable amount of people complaining that it wasn’t the version they played in the arcades and that theirs was the superior.
I must also say that such (bad) nostalgia generated an irrational and unjustified hatred of Playmore / SNK Playmore and its games (it’s almost 100% certain that KOF XIII was affected by that), because many of the old fans said that their games weren’t made by the old SNK, when in fact it always was and KOF 2002 it was done in part by Playmore. For those who didn’t know, Playmore was created by the original founder of SNK, Eikichi Kawasaki, as a way to stabilize things economically and then try to reunite the SNK staff for the bankruptcy it suffered in 2001, which he mostly achieved, but that did not stop people from believing that it was not the old SNK.
And finally I would like to clarify that while it is obviously not the case for all the old KOF fans and much less of the competitive community at high levels, there are too many who think in that way that it is impossible to ignore them. It's not bad that for you KOF 98 or KOF 2002 are your favorites, they are very good games without a doubt, but don't say that all KOF games after any of those 2 are inferior games. All this I have said is based on what I have seen in my country about what KOF fans think here, I’m from Mexico.

SNK went through painstaking effort to make these sprites man, it took them months and months to make every single character. I hate how people were so up SF 4’s ass that no one brought it and it was a financial failure for SNK, putting them in a hole. All the KOF unique tools were nerfed to the ground, neutral was basically non-existent compared to older games, and it all devolves into "jump in, and pull an HD combo out of your ass" type of gameplay.
