Did it ever! I remember going to the arcade losing mad quarters to FF1. I beat it with all three dude's, but still.
Yeah, you're telling me. This game is a pain in the ass.
Two things...
1) The number of continues used will be displayed in the last two digits of the year at the ending. As Max used *19* continues to finish the game, the year of 1919 was displayed. To make game displays the correct chronoligical year, you must finish the game with no continues (and will receive an extended ending too).
2) The game have two sets of special attacks: One for the japanese version, and other for the international version. The japanese version features the commands used for the all regions of the SNES and Genesis versions of the game, and it is the standard special commands for the Fatal Fury 1's hero trio in the following games. If the game is set for a non-japanese system, almost all the special attacks will change the commands. That's why, during Max playthrough, Terry's Crack Shoot have a different command from what we are used to use.
So I can immediately disprove the first statement. The Neo Geo MVS does have an RTC chip inside used to keep track of the time and date. The game wasn't Y2K compliant, so that's why the year 1919 was shown in the ending, along with the real date. (Any emulated versions to my knowledge don't use the RTC of the system, so the default date is shown instead)
This is also evident in the fact that Max used more than 19 continues in his playthrough. Most of these early fighting games have a very easy way to tell if a continue/s were used. Since nothing you do in game can score you less than 100 points, the first two digits of your score can be used to keep track of the # of continues used in a session. (unless you play up to 100 continues)
I'm aware the comment's 4 years old, I just wanted to clear this up, just in case.
At 6:30 Max did the typical rookie mocking of Tung Fu Rue... And like everyone before him, regrets it very quickly.

This was made by the person who created the original Street Fighter, right? He got sniped by SNK, to make a fighting game better than Street Fighter, and he did...but, he didn't know Capcom was making a Street Fighter 2 at the time, and it was released the *same year as Fatal Fury.*
I've been watching the legacy since he began. I was in the stream trying to put my 2 cents and trying to provide facts and info for Max.
I am no SNK expert by any means, but I've played all the games he's played or will play (save for Wild Ambition, but I know enough about it though.)
A good chunk of the chat spread misinformation lol Like Real Bout 1 being a remake of Fatal Fury 1 (Wild Ambition is the remake). Lol
I'll be voicing input on the videos he uploads since I'm loving the legacy and I love Terry Bogard lmao
Spoiler: He did not play Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, much to my sadness lol I doubt he'll play it now that he's played Real Bout 1 and 2.
Now, on to some Some Fun Facts:
- Fatal Fury 1's Final Boss, Geese Howard, is the originator of the "SNK Boss Syndrome". Others to include in this list is Fatal Fury 2/Special's Wolfgang Krauser, Rugal Bernstein in just about any game possible (ESPECIALLY in KOF 2002 Unlimited Match...!), and Magaki in KOF 11. They're are likely others, but those guys are the ones you'd generally hear, especially Geese and Rugal.
- Tung Fu Rue is actually Terry's master and taught him everything he knows. Geese is also a practitioner but modifies the fighting style like Terry does. Also, Jeff Bogard is actually Terry and Andy's adoptive father and was an enemy of Geese. Jeff, Geese, and Cheng (a character from FF2/FFSpecial), were all students of Tung Fu, the latter of which who choose Jeff instead of Geese to learn the secret techniques of the Hakkyokuseiken fighting style. Out of jealousy, Geese would later find and kill Jeff after he became powerful in the underworld scene. Terry and Andy swore revenge against Geese and left to Tung Fu to learn more about Hakkyokuseiken. Years later, the Bogard Brothers, plus their good friend Joe Higashi, would join the 1991 edition of King of Fighters tournament (AKA: This game).
- While Terry trained under Tung Fu Rue, Andy actually went to learn the Shiranui fighting style with Mai Shiranui (who debuts in FF2 / Fatal Fury Special). He did this to differentiate from Terry. The two are friendly rivals after the same goal, after all.
- Joe Higashi seems out of place, doesn't he? lol The Bogard Brothers have a goal to get revenge on Geese and Joe is just...tagging along. Well, that's exactly what he's doing. Joe was created to have a more comical character out of the trio. Joe, despite being of Japanese origin, lived in Thailand where he became a practitioner of Muay Thai and earned the nickname "Hurricane Upper Joe". He got his headband from his grandmother just as he was going to travel around the world to show off his skills and "start his legend". He met the Bogard Brothers in the USA and upon learning of their goals to enter this years KOF tournament to take revenge on Geese, Joe joined them. There, Joe fought Hwa Jai and the two became friends (Hwa Jai even made cameos in future Fatal Fury games and became playable (again) in KOF 13).
- Believe it or not, Billy Kane has a sister named Lilly Kane. She's technically introduced in Fatal Fury 3 via Joe's ending. It turns out that Joe and Lilly are really into each other and Billy simply does NOT approve! lol Their relationship is all over the place though... You might hear they're together and then you might hear that they aren't (KOF 2003 and KOF 13's Fatal Fury Team endings seem to forget Lilly exists... DESPITE Lilly making a BG cameo in Billy's Stage in KOF 13) ... Though KOF 14 seems to heavily imply that they are still together (much to Billy's chargin).
- Billy Kane. First off, his last name is pronounced as "Kahn"/"Kon"/"Kaan", not "cane". Billy is Geese's right hand man in the Fatal Fury series and KOF series. Billy is absolutely loyal to Geese after he helped him and his sister years ago. Billy and Lilly were orphans and Billy did some bad deeds to help support each other. Geese recruited Billy because of his excellent skill in Bojutsu and later made him the undefeated champion of the KOF tournaments...that is until Terry came along.
- The first canonical King of Fighters tournament took place in Art of Fighting 2. The AOF series is a prequel to the Fatal Fury series, taking place years before it's events. Geese is actually a secret boss in AOF2 and is the organizer of the first KOF tournament. Since then, Geese held more KOF tournaments and eventually hired Billy Kane who would become the undefeated champion of KOF until this game.

I actually had to leave on last night's stream so I don't know if he played anything else after 98 UM. I do know that he's definitely playing Maximum Impact, KOF 11 (he said so), KOF 14 and possibly KOF 12? (I hope he just plays KOF 13. There's no reason to play KOF 12. lol)
He's also likely going to play the Capcom vs SNK games (CVS1, CVS2, SVC: Chaos, and that Neo Geo Pocket SVC game lol)

I'm really impressed by all the animations and the fact they have different front and back sprites for moving between planes. Not only walking, but even moves like the jump kick forward and backwards. Wow!

This was the game along with SF2, and MK that got me into fighting games. And cemented Terry as one of my most favorite fighting game characters.
That Terry Bogard artwork is in the book "Art of Evangelion". It is one of the early jobs Sadamoto did before Eva.

Ah, classic Fatal Fury. I remember Tung Fu Ru being the wall everyone at the arcades lost to.
I love how both max and Ignant Rizzy are doing Terry legacies but from different perspectives; Rizzy's plowing right through all the Fatal Fury games as someone who knows them inside and out and has been a longtime fan while Max is jumping straight in with fresh eyes paired with only a handful of knowledge. It's great to see both play the same games (mostly, since Rizzy isnt doing KOF) with the opposite ends of experience.

Geese in FF 1 isn't that bad tho, once you knock him down you can just time your Burn Knuckle and knock him down again as soon as he stands up. you can do that the whole match.

SNK out here with the first capoeirista in fighting games ten years before Tekken and nobody's talking about it. o_O I had NO idea.
There's a better animated capoeira fighter coming in Fatal Fury 3, who also pre-dates Eddy Gordo. There's also one in King of Fighters 11, but she's quite a bit later than Gordo. They've pretty much made at least one fighter of every style at this point. No playable panda bears though.

I played the SNES port way back in Ye Olde Dayes. It didn't play very well back then and now we're spoiled for how much developers have learned and technology has improved over the last twenty-plus years.

Joseph Stache FFS is excellent. Love that game, first SNK game I ever played back in 1994, got me hooked on the series and SNK in general.
Well you must be talking about the u.s, and in the u.s the fg culture is dominated by Capcom. They dont recognize anything But Snk's presence in Cvs, and Kof Xiii only because of the sprite work. (Maybe Garou too, only because It looks more like Sf so it's not alien to them) But it's not exactly the same in other places... There are communities that respect Snk a lot, and FFS as much as the later Snk games. That just cannot become an American reality.

It reads the clock on whatever system you’re playing on and puts that as the year date. Only reads the last two digits of the year though. Snk never thought to make it possible to go past the 1900’s so you can get anywhere from 1900 to 1999 for your ending. 2019 so it gave Max 1919 in his ending.
