  • Learn how to start a fire in a fire pit using the log cabin method. This is the best way to start a fire if you plan to cook over it, and it can also work great if you just want to sit around and enjoy the ambiance (and heat) of the flames.
I (Jon - the guy in the video) originally learned fire building in Boy Scouts (I'm an Eagle Scout), and I'm excited to be able to share the skill with you!
It'll just take a few easy steps, and you'll want to pay attention to the three types of wood that you'll need to properly assemble your fire lay:
    1. Tinder
    2. Kindling
    3. Fuel wood
Other than that, you just need a match (or lighter) and some newspaper or a firestarter, and you're ready to light a fire in your fire pit!
If you have any questions about this process (or other types of fire building structure) please leave a comment below, and I'd be happy to answer. I intend to reply (or react) to every comment on the channel. So say hi!

Thank you! I've never done this and will be camping on my own (in a well populated area) soon. I'm toying with trying to use the campfire ring.

Your beginning camping series is great for a new camper like me. This video is very useful. How do you put out a fire? And what would you do if you want to start the fire again the next evening? I've never been camping, sorry that they're such basic questions. Thanks.

Thanks Holly, glad you found it helpful.
There’s a few ways to put out a fire. You can simply let it burn out over time, until the ashes naturally cool.
If you want to put the fire out fast, you can dump water on it, and stir the ashes, to ensure everything gets thoroughly extinguished.
When you’re ready to start a fire the next day, it’s usually best to start from scratch. You may have heard of people restarting fires with coals from a previously hot fire. That is something that is sometimes used for survival situations, but when camping at a normal campsite, it is usually best to totally extinguish your campfire until it’s cool to the touch, and then start over the next time you want a fire.
Hope that helps, and if in doubt, always err on the safe side.

That's a phenomenal idea. After watching his video on "easy weeknight pizza" I was actually thinking I might do a video on dutch oven pizza (over a campfire). Would be pretty epic.
