    One of my friends from college was from Oregon and had never filled his own gas. We went to college in Hawaii he took his friend to the airport and had to fill up on the way back. Dude took thirty minutes to figure out how to pump gas 😂, so I guess we all don’t know how to do it! Sorry couldn’t help myself as that was one of the funniest gas stories I have heard. This is such a good video though thanks for the charts on the breakdowns. Most people just throw the KWH’s at you and the range gained per hour and then move on so pretty refreshing to see such an exhaustive video on this.

  • @jbbevan
    @jbbevan Před 2 lety +3

    Tom is almost the "godfather" of EV commentary. I have corresponded with him going back to 2015 when we both had BMW i3's. I have never personally met him, but he has always had a wealth of information which he shares liberally. The only thing I would add or emphasize to his discussion is that the chart he shows is about Level 2 home charging. Most ICE drivers are leary about "converting" to an EV because of charging time. I hardly ever "wait" for charging...what happens while I'm asleep is not something I'm "waiting" for. But if you're on the road the chart would look totally different. With DCFC (DC Fast Charging) you are rarely talking about more than 'minutes' (not hours) to charge to 80%. I recently drove my Mach E from Salt Lake City to LA. I stopped to charge 5 times, but I only "waited" for 10 minutes, total. Why? Because bathroom breaks, grabbing a sack of peanuts and/or a soft drink all happened WHILE the car was charging...so 4 out of 5 times when I got back to the car it was already close to 80%. For daily driving (charging at home) you NEVER actually wait as long as it would take to fill a gas tank (because it happens overnight). In moving from ICE to EV your entire paradigm/mindset has to shift to a whole different set of behaviors and expectations, but after you get used to that (maybe 10 days max), it's actually (a) something you don't think about and (b) much easier than your former life.

    Great job, Tom. Thank you.
    (Edit: this was from mid-2021 and may have since been resolved) At 30:00 I would say that Kyle of Out of Spec found that once you use up for your free 250kW of charging with Plug and Charge, there's no way to switch over to a paid Electrify America account. This means that once you exhaust the free charging, you can only pay the highest cost using Plug and Charge and will not have access to the discounted rates that EA subscribers will have access to.
    I hope Ford and EA are working on this or have already solved it. The guest rate is significantly higher than the discounted member rate. So while Plug and Charge is great during the free period, it becomes significantly less useful once it comes time to start paying for charging.
    Plug and Charge needs to be able to switch over to the discounted member rate after the free period is over.

    I just got my Mach-e yesterday and I can’t thank you enough for making this video. My dealer didn’t go into any details about charging… and they didn’t pre-charge my car, so there was only 40 miles when I took delivery. My first step was to drive to a local shopping center with a row of Tesla SuperChargers. I walked up, opened the door and my jaw dropped. I clearly needed an education and your video gives me confidence that I can work this out. As it stands, I now have 14 miles and at least I think I can figure out what to do. Quick question… does that Tesla adapter work at public SuperChargers? One of my clients owns a shopping center and he said he made it a point to include a clause that their SuperChargers would be free to everyone, including non-Teslas.

      @@rondavis2791 FYI, that was the first thing I thought of. My dealer specifically said their charger is for the service department NOT for customer use. They probably would've made an exception because they were supposed to charge it before selling it. That was literally my first day and I ended up using free chargers in shopping malls for a couple of weeks, then installing a ChargePoint Flex home charger. I traded that Mach-E in last month and I now have a F-150 Lightning... and the dealer still says their chargers are not open to the public.

    Good thorough explanation. My Mach-e GTPE is my 2nd ev. Other one is a VW e-Golf that I got for commuting a few years ago. I have a Chargepoint 40amp home charger on a 240v circuit. Works great and provides a little over 25 miles of range on a hour.

    For those on road trips. FYI every RV plug is 240amps. Most all are 30-50amps. With a adapter you can charge at any place that RVs can plug in. 🔌

    Just excellent! New subscriber based on this video alone. Especially appreciated the nitty-gritty details that, for some of us at least, allows me to determine that my existing AC panel will nicely accommodate Ford's mobile charger's draw...while also knowing that the mobile charger will fit our lifestyle.

    What you want is the fat 50-60 amp 240v oven line. I bought a house and had them install this outlet.
    To be honest.. my tesla sits in garage. and charges on 110v. so I only use it for going out for fun with the guys.. or the girls. All week long.. I use the 2006 Honda odyssey and put bags of mulch in that instead of my tesla.
    I have the 50 amp at my other house. so that is when I would want to be able to charge quickly if i drove out for the day.

    This is a fantastic video full of useful information. I'm a new Tesla owner but I have to say, this review has been so helpful. I wish I had know n this before I installed my Tesla wall connector and my husband ordered his own Tesla. I would have told him to consider the Mach-E!

    Thanks for this. Have you done this same information vid for the new 2023 Mach e ? I’ve heard the standard range is a LFP and can be charged to 100% more often, and the charging curve is better and charges faster after 80% now. Really appreciate your videos.
