Holystone HS175D review fail - does it belong in the trash?

- The HolyStone HS175D drone is supposed to be nice and easy for beginners and fly around doing a lot of things for you. My one mainly sat on the ground annoying me - and as HolyStone never got back to me about the problems I suffered, here's my review based on my experience.

Thanks for the review. I got this for Christmas, worked absolutely fine, no issues. I'm a beginner. Worked it out straight away by going through the instruction book (not my natural instinct but only took a few minutes). I did have one issue in working how to turn off beginner mode which restricts how far and how high I could fly and emailed their support team yesterday (late on a Bank Holiday in the UK) and received a response today, less than 24 hours later. So I suppose it looks like you've had a bad experience, but I wanted to let people know that there have been positive experiences too - assuming anyone reads as far as comment number 60!?
Exactly 💯
As an experienced drone pilot, I can say that the hs175d is an absolute joy to fly. No issues setting up, downloading or flying,in wind even. It's a great drone for the price. Follow instructions and you should be just fine.
I'm at a loss why any experience drone pilot would want to fly this. Even if it worked perfectly, there's no stabilization and the camera looks awful. Have a read through the comments and you'll find theres a split: either it worked for people, or it didn't. There's no middle ground, It tells me these quads are a bit inconsistent. Feel free to watch the two follow ups as I can show you exactly what is happening in terms of why it's going wrong.
@CurryKitten 👍I fly because it's fun, I have several drones, from micro to the larger ones. Some work great and others not so well. Nevertheless it's all fun to me, and I don't think hs175d is trash. That's all. Have fun. 😀
I have had the best experience with the holystone 175D, it worked like a dream and calibration was amazing, gps was amazing aswell
I have the HS175D, and it's performance has been flawless. I watched your video while waiting for it to arrive and was worried I'd made a bad choice in this drone. Well, I couldn't be happier with it.
Perhaps there's something you were missing in the instructions 🤔.
After going through 2 drones and 3 controllers (see follow up) as well as working closely with the HolyStone people, it wasn't something missing in the instructions. Either I had a series of bad stuff - in which case, their QC is very bad, or it particularly didn't like my phone. Having taken it apart, I do notice that that GPS/Compass isn't shielded very well - which could lead to the frequent GPS loss - perhaps they improved that. The loss of signal near my phone remains a mystery - other than it wasn't tested well enough. I took a look at their h700e quad as well and that worked perfectly, so I don't know why this one went so wrong. I'm really glad your is working well for you - but looking at the comments here from other users it seems to be a little bit of a toss up about whether you get one that works or not
I had the same issue just a few min ago, I had to push the upward to the left
Same exact problem here. I flew it once for 5 mins. No control, crashed into a house. After that I could not for the life of me get the rotors unlocked. Apparently because I can't get a GPS signal. No matter how many times I repeat the steps I can't get a GPS signal ANYWHERE!. $200 paperweight at this point.
Theres a setting to disable GPS for places without gps
Yup!
I had the same problem you did. What ended up working for me was charging the controller to full capacity after that I didn't have connectivity issues. There are other issues with this drone though. Follow me doesn't work. Obstacle avoidance doesn't work, calibration doesn't seem to work, and eventually, one of the motors lost both props and it fell into the Erie Canal in my backyard.
My son was able to locate it with a fish finder and retrieve it with a skimmer from our pool, but as expected, it didn't turn on. I wrote a bad review about this drone and Holy Stone reached out to me and offered a replacement. I accepted their offer. They replied that I would receive the new one in 3 to 6 days. Never received the replacement and never heard back from them, even when I reached out for status updates. The day before the return window was going to close, I sent it back to Amazon for a full refund. I got my refund, was told to keep the drone, then 2 weeks later, the replacement showed up.
I guess their CS is ok, albeit slow and not as informative as I would like, but their product and app, suck. I gave the drones to my son to work with and see what he can do. He's having the same trouble with the app that I had, but he did get it to at least work in FPV and take pictures and videos. The pictures are great, the video is shaky because of the drone, but when hovering with no wind, it takes nice videos too.
My son is having fun with it, as for me, I'm going to go with a DJI I suppose. I hear the the DJI Mini 3 Pro is the one us beginners want to get.
Edit: I see there's a follow up video. Here's hoping you got your issue fixed.
Glad your son is getting something from it. Yes, if you are looking to fly around and get some nice smooth cinematic shots with not much hassle, the DJI pretty much has the market on this one. The good news about them launching a new drone every 6 months or so, is that the 2nd hand market is quite good for picking up slightly older, but very capable drones.
Mine has worked well, GPS hold is OK, return to land, great, easy control response. The antenna fold out is for looks only, does not contain an antenna. Antenna wires are internal. Looks like a bad controller for you, and Holy Stone customer support is very good. I had several questions answered within a day, plus follow up.
I had one of these. You have to follow their 3 minute video on this 175d to get it to fly. Ignore the manual. But with that said it was always a very unstable drone that could not maintain a gps lock no matter what. Finally a few weeks I was flying and it lost the gps lock and it flew away. It disconnected from the controller and it was gone. Never found it.
It was unfortunate that you had that experience with the HS175D. I own this drone and enjoy flying it. Once I got my preflight check in order, starting this drone is like second nature. Definitely a beginner drone to get familiar with the controls. I would admit it is priced a bit high compared to what you can get around the same price. One last thing, I had to contact holy stone myself and did the live chat and that worked great. I had a good experience. All the best to you in 2022.
Which others would you recommend under 250g and around the $200 range or less?
@@TTime685 Tuff question to answer. 250g is the key for the US to avoid FAA but it gets difficult when you include $200 range or less. From what I am seeing I would probably consider the Ruko F11 mini, the Potensic Atom SE or a used or refurbished dji mini se. I don't have experience with any of the drones I mentioned but I was once on the market for a drone under $200 and would have definitely considered one of those drones. If I am to consider my experience flying drones I would guide you to consider something in the $300 to $400 range as you will be looking upwards in no time. Review each drone and take note of what you are looking to use the drone for. Good luck.
@@paulmouttet1739 Ok thanks!
@@TTime685 hi, another option I forgotnto mention would be the C-Fly faith 2 se or the mini. These are more recent drones and close in price to what you are looking for. Again, I have not flown these but have researched them and they seem to be decent drones based on what you are looking for.
I was having issues with it at first. You have to put your phone in airplane mode to get the WiFi to stay connected. And for some reason the WiFi won’t connect at times. GPS won’t work unless it is connected to WiFi. I tried flying it inside with Optical mode and it is uncontrolable. The more I calibrate it the easier it gets. It’s kind of a pain though. I downloaded the Holy Stone app and now my videos are not saving to the app for some reason. I think the camera was turned off in the app. Don’t know why. I didn’t turn it off. Just my 2 cents.
I just purchased this drone, and I love it. I was already used to line of site drones, this was my first gps drone and it worked magnificent. As far as follow me mode idk, I don't think I'll ever use that anyway. Thanks for the review though, I was frightened after watching it lol
Really glad it's working for you. I'd say i just had a duff one, but I had 2 drones and 3 controllers and still wouldn't work for me! Perhaps the type of phone I have is breaking it as well. Having taken one to bits (to remake into a betaflight quad) there's no real shielding on the GPS which could certainly account for it dropping the lock often. Perhaps they have improved that since
Mi drone no emite la señal wifi es ese mismo frone del video
This review is very accurate. This model was my first drone. I spent more time trying to get the damn thing to get into GPS mode than actually flying it. I followed every step precisely numerous times to no avail. It would eventually connect, but by then I was frustrated. I found putting my cell phone into airplane mode, the drone would connect easier, but now the controller won't charge.
Me too. Almost afraid to fly.😂😂😢
@@Ericrbo Does your controller charge?
Not for long, and now one of the rotors won't work.😡
@@Ericrbo No wonder they sell the rotors so much on Amazon.
Good review
Thank you
Two years later I am having the same problem with their drone. Bought it from Amazon, replaced it and had same issue. Would not connect to GPS or my phone. Company sent out a free one for an apology, and this one flies, but still will not connect to GPS. Definitely not you, its the crappy drone.
It only flies if it gets a gps lock. To bypass the gps mode you have to press the go home button and fly in headless mode. If you lose gps midflight say your prayers
See the follow up video - this thing lost GPS lock frequently and in the middle of flights!
Hello there I’m an amateur and very new to drone flying and I purchased this same drone and have not had any issues like the ones you’ve described. I didn’t see you calibrating the gyro as recommended in the instructions. I even let my young nephews fly and he really liked it. Maybe you got a bad unit. Thanks for all the videos you’ve posted. You’re helping a lot of us beginners.
It's a devisive little quad this one. Either people have a great experience with it, or it's awful. If you watch the follow up videos, I could pin it down to my phone being in the phone holder. I put that on the ground and it's ok.... although it did tend to lose the GPS signal all by itself. I did do the full calibration, and I actually went through 2 quads and 3 controllers without getting a working one :D I looked at another Holystone drone and it was absolutely fine. I'm really pleased you are having fun with yours, but I hope you understand that given my experience with them, I couldn't recommend it at all
I was hoping for a different ending. I was thinking there was going to be a missed step or something, but not. Thank you for making sure we stay away from this one.
I was hoping someone might reply and say "you just need to do ...." but nobody did. It's probably just a dud - which happens, but you'd like to think you could get a response from the company about it
Too late for me because I pulled the trigger on this turd just this morning (03-01-22). 😞
Tank you for all details and transparency!
I have a HS510 I haven't had any operating problems with it and it is fun to fly crazy and practice with. My problem is the camera.... No gimble just manual up down adjust and it looks like a fisheye lens.
I just got one of these. Tried to fly it today. Had issues getting it going and once I did low battery alerted put different battery in same thing. Both batteries charged last night as well charged remote.
Thank you for the review. I bought mine from amazon and I'm sending it back. Same issues that you have. I have two dji's ... the mini 2 and the mav pro.. also had the holystone hs700d as my first drone. All of them were up and flying in 30 minutes or so. This hs175 has yet to fly. The calibration is a nightmare, never completing its cycle. Remote stops responding. I enjoyed my HS700D and learned how to fly a drone with holystone. This hs175 is not worth buying.
If you watch the follow up video (and haven't sent it back yet) it would be interesting to know if the radio wouldn't disconnect if you move your phone away. Whilst being completely unpractical it would be useful to say to HolyStone that if you use xyz phone then it breaks
Great review, very sad story 😢
Glad I'm not the only one with these same issues. Took forever to get it to lift off after calibration, then worked fine for less than 2 minutes, then it wouldn't respond to controller, then it put itself into "return to home" mode... Maybe it was trying to return to where it was manufactured? Because it went the opposite direction from where it just took off from-- just shot straight up to about 100 ft and then went off into the woods at high speed. It ended up crashed and stuck about 60 ft up in a very tall maple tree. The tree was not climbable so a shotgun was used to knock it down so I could get my mini SD card back. This drone REALLY doesn't work now and sits on a shelf (full of holes). Flies like a rock and has bullet holes... THAT'S why the call it a Holy Stone.
I would not waste money and time on this model again.
The famous RTV (Return to China) mode! I would have asked you if it worked any better if the phone was placed away from it... which it did with mine, but I guess that's difficult to test with your shotgun recovery system. Sounds effective, but has it's downsides :D
@CurryKitten Power on your control, on the left stick go up & down (you should hear it beep) after it beeps then tilt & hold both sticks towards the bottom right corner(s) at the same time until it beeps again and then is when it should be fully functional
Does anyne know why the controller will no longer charge?
The battery has probably died. There's a simple lipo soldered into the controller, you could open that up and see what the voltage is. Anything below 3v and the charge circuit is probably refusing to try and add voltage to it
I got the exact same model from Amazon and finally got it to get in the air and then the back of motor stopped working sent it back to Amazon and got myself a Potensic 88 much better results but due to rain haven't got to fly much, but it does fly!! Thanks for the review I agree completely
Was there a special secret to get it flying I missed - or is my one just broke? Glad you got yourself a flyable quad in the end
So I just got one. (June 2024). All the characteristics shown in this video are very accurate, hard to bind, looses signal, not a very consistent drone operationally. In addition completely lost signal when it was about 100 feet up, went on a tour around a building out of sight, came back around and proceeded to fly through a large group of trees, quite spectacular! Never hit one, give it credit for this, and crash landed. Thought I broke front left are. Contacted home office on box. Where do I get parts, I ask? Stated go to our website, plenty there. Went there, NOTHING is in stock....NOTHING. Omly alternative is e,b,a,y and buy a used crashed drone. They go for a lot! Do not waste your money.
I'm new to flying a drone, and I must say mine worked just perfect right out of the box. Mine is so small I even flew it inside my house, down hallway. I don't know your issue, I would recommend this drone to anyone. Your video has been the only one I have found where you have issues, probably just unfortunate you got a bad one....
Bad two - if you continue watching my videos on this. I'm super happy that yours works though. The comments seem to be split between those who had a great experience and those who had massive failures.
Sorry about your experience. Fortunately for me, my HS175D works great. Still a Beginner and always challenged but it’s me not the drone. Wrote my own Idiot proof instructions:
Drone
- [ ] Turn on Drone
- [ ] Turn on Controller
- [ ] Left stick Up then Down, lights stop flashing
Optional: Test Drone
- [ ] Left stick up to start props
- [ ] Left stick down to stop
- [ ] Connect iPhone WiFi to Drone / Controller
- [ ] Open HS App (firmware version @ too right confirms connection
- [ ] Select Preparation
- [ ] Select Calibrate (lights flash)
- [ ] Select calibrate for horizontal compass calibration.
- [ ] Then perform Vertical calibration w/ nose / camera up. Screen indicates success.
- [ ] Drone camera view appears @ successful calibration.
Turn on: both sticks pointing to 7:30 position. Then left stick at 4:30 & right stick at 7:30, propellers start.
Ready to fly.
I'm genuinely happy this is working great for some people... just a shame it's not everyone. If you check out the follow up videos I made about this, you'll see that the TX seems to get wiped out by the proximity of my phone next to it. Move the phone a few feet away and all is good (although it does tend to lose sat lock far too easily and often)
Mine flies great, just have a hard time getting my camera working.
POS Wayne, thankyou for the heads up 😱
If I can save 1 person from wasting their money, then my job is done.
Last week (2 years after this initial review) I ordered from amazon the HD420D, Even if it's not the same product number, it have GPS inside... And guess what? Had the same problem than you. The RTH even goes in a random direction and I had to get it back by hand at 70 Meters high. It's my first drone, and my first fly. By chance, I had a lot of experience flying bigger RC helicopters so I had enough experience to get it back manually. I returned it to amazon the same hour.
Two years ago i ordered one of these as my first drone. I could never get it to stay in place. Would get it up 5 feet and it would go in different directions on its own. I thought it was something I was doing wrong, so I gave up on drones till now. I just ordered a dji mini 2 se, I'm hoping for a better experience, or I'm just done with drones all together.
I think the DJI will be a far far nicer experience
I sure hope so.
So I've gotten one for Christmas, had it for about 48 hours, it took me about mmm an hour? I was inside so I had to switch to "inside mode" research is key, it got up felt really good in my hands I had full control. It had slight drift if left to hover but that I think like alot of flying stuff you hand to adjust it. I'll check in a couple days
Seems to be a quality control issue. I've had issues with mine with both GPS calibration and WiFi linking. Hit or miss, I guess. YMMV
The problem was you didn't do the start up connection properly. You need to connect to your phone WiFi to sync it. I have had this since it came out and it works perfectly . I have friends that had big money drones for years and even they say for the money it's fast handles good keeps good altitude. And the camera does work from the phone and controller. .
Watch the other videos I made on this, and read the comment from other users. The tl;dr version is that people either get one that works perfectly, or it's like mine. Their doesn't seem to be a middle ground
Thank- you Curry Kitten for your totally honest review of this drone. To start off, they adve1rtise this drone as a "beginners " for those who are new to flying drones & don't want to spend the extra dollars on say, a Mavic Mini to get their feet wet, so to speak. The HS175D is un updated version of the HS175 as I understand. After what you & others have discovered, this would well end a person new to the drone scene to possibly be shy of these drones either of the drones problems or what they may think of their inabilty to fly a "beginner drone." I've personally have had a HS720E do a fly away on me with it losing GPS and I've never found it. As far as Holy Stone s customer service representatives, they keep stalling on trying to help me & just send an email giving me a 10% online coupon for a new drone, which I feel is a cheesy way of blowing me off on the real issue.
I agree, something that is for beginners needs to be friendly and as close to crash proof as you can get. When things go wrong here, the beginner will no doubt think they are doing it all wrong, and may give up quickly.
Thanks Wayne
Best review video…. in the world. Holystone, more like Holyshit.
Well you did what you could so what else is there to do? At least your Honest and not like some reviewer's if you know what I mean.hope you and family have a great 🎅.
Nice honest review. Have to applaud you Wayne in putting in all this effort of a normal real review,
Sucks that the product and support were not up to the challenge.
Perhaps a teardown to show the parts that go into a cheep consumer drone product? You won't have to worry about breaking stuff, or needing to reassemble.
On the bright side, if there is any, is you have a set of motors (and props) that could be repurposed to make a flyable drone. (repurposed an FC swap from spares, or perhaps just transplant motors to carbon frame)
I did already have another toy-grade quad I was thinking about converting into a betaflight style acro quad (just for fun) but I could do something similar potentially with this one. I'll have a think about it in the new year.
Does anyone know how to the the home point for the drone
I was really hoping to see you smash that thing into the bin at the end..LOL Maybe next time. Great content, I've subscribed!! Hello from British Columbia, Canada.
Have a watch of the follow up videos, I eventually rip the guts out and rebuild it better than it was
@@CurryKitten will do.👍
You should try Snaptain A10 Drone and I love Snaptain Drones
Great and honest review, Wayne! Thanks! 😃
But yeah... Sometimes it's not worth it!
Happy holidays and stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Mine failed after 87 meters altitude. Lost gps???
And the wifi does not work anymore. It s still fly but no wifi
Yep - I found that the GPS would be a bit sketchy. This was very bad when loosing the control signal at the same time as it couldn't hold position. It would just hold altitude and drift off!
I had issues with this drone to get it to fly the first time. The calibration instructions were not written clearly. Once I got through that the first time, it worked perfectly for an entry-level adult drone. You must have gotten a dud.
You might think so - watch my follow up videos on it :)
I got the hs720g I was ok for 4 times I calibrate the gps everytime and it went backwards and sideways into a wall was low Altitude so nothing happened but I also had problems with toilet bowling when it drift sideways in circles, I called customer service but they said if I didn't buy it on Amazon or their store they can't honor the warranty which is next to none I kept flying as is and again it went backwards and sideways into a tree hit every branch and landed upside down making a high pitch noise because the motors didn't stop I had pressed the turn off button but took like 3 second to stop now the gimbal doesn't work, I bought mine new for 190 so i feel is not safe it could go into a car or a person so is garbage
Sounds windy when he took of tho
You have got it in beginner mode change it to expert in the settings
It was in expert mode.... if only it was that easy to fix!
I've had 2 different holy stone drones and both where defective one all the motors stopped mid flight like it hit and invisible wall 30 feet from me and the second one thr remote wouldnt hold a charge ! I have a $20 drone fron Walmart that Flys better then the holy stone drones unfortunately I return the first one ordered 2 more of diff models but same brand and the last one to show up is this model I hope it works watching this I'm worried
I hope it works for you. The comments seem split between those where it works perfectly, or doesn't work at all. I hope the roulette spin is in your favour
For anyone looking to get a budget drone that can take stable footage and decent photos the DJI mini 2 on the used market is one of your best bets. If you're in the usa or the UK they pop up on there used in the $300 range. I have the Mavic air 2 and my coworker has the mini 2 (that I recommended to him). Both amazing drones. Super stable footage, zero issues with setup, and decent power for flying in medium wind conditions. Ill most likely be buying a Mini 3 pro in the next few months because its even quieter than my Mavic air 2. I've seen issues out of all the drone brands, including DJI, but overall DJI seems to have the least amount of problems nowadays. They're really just dominating the market right now and most likely will for a long time. PS, my friend bought the HS175D, it worked flawlessly out of the box, however its pretty much useless for cinematography. The footage is way too unstable.
I have run into issues with this same unit but some of the issues I ran into was not flipping the antenna up and I believe I saw you also forgot to flip the antenna up or am I mistaken.
Let me direct you to this post I made a little while ago czcams.com/channels/crr5rcI6WVv7uxAkGej9_g.htmlcommunity?lb=UgkxT1aXWIjEx6Mguz72y2NbfSd0r7e5Wkbp
a stones throw from the garbage can not worthy of the trash or recycle bin...trusting your review thanks!
How odd. I've successfully flown mine several dozen times, with no problem preparing and taking off. Both outdoors (GPS) and indoors (no GPS).
EXCEPT - today I tried using the calibration sequence on the phone app and it wasn't successful.
Try using what it says in the manual - using the physical controller.
I have noticed though, that it loses movement control when the drone and control are very near an electric power line (don't fret - it was the supply line to a house).
Yes, it doesn't have high-end gimbal stabilization, but it will hold its place in a 10 mph wind and take pictures and videos of acceptable hobbyist quality.
Haven't gotten "follow me" mode to work, but that may be just a matter of penetrating through the inadequate and fragmented documentation.
Again, RTFM.
sigh...There's multiple videos featuring this thing. Everything was tried, the manual was read. it still didn't work. I do completely accept that for some people the experience was ok, for other (read the comments there's a real mix) it was much like mine
I have had no problems with my 175D. I know this is frustrating but I would say that Holystone dropped the ball and should have replaced it. BTW the antenna is just for looks, it is internal according to the FCC diagram photos they submitted for registration in the US.
Not questioning the lack of antennae but why would they do that? Takes away from their credibility if you ask me.
hs360 was also a big POS. went thru 3 then got a DJI and NEVER looked back haha
Thanks for a great review I just bought my 1st drone as to the one you got it let me tell you how I was on Amazon and it was on as a hot item going for 256.00 sales over now 169.00 (RED FLAG) to me that was Martha Stewart shit so all beware with Amazon lighting sale AND the worst part about it I should've went with my first choice DJI Mini 2 which I well. And because of you now I know what to look for this one has none the other and then some.
Thanks
I could not get my drone to go into GPS Mode, so i had been flying without it… until today when it decided to fly away for good 😭
My first $100 drone was a HS200 which came DOA. Holystone did replace it but it was a cheap infuriating POS when it did fly. Still have it on the wall just to remind me what not to buy 😂
Going against the grain here I have an HS175D and it works well. I flew it in a good breeze today to a height of 70M and its incredibly stable for a cheap drone. Pictures saved to the SD card are always sharp and clear and today at a temp of 0C the batteries lasted 17-18 minutes each which I think is impressive for cold LIPO's.
I guess you had the bad egg of a batch but good that you reported it all as it happened, especially when HS failed on the support which would have annoyed me more than the defect in the first place.
So far I'm impressed with the 175D for its price, hope it stays that way.
Find my photos are of a poor standard...I'm not using a sd card yet...are pictures better quality on sd card than on the drones memory itself?
Great honest review.
I owned this drone ,same problems ,mine flew forward and down and trashed back rotor
To solve the Problem, Holy Stone just have to rename their brand in Horrendous Shit.
Exact same thing happened my first two flights with this same drone. Finally got mine too work after long pressing the power up on the drone then moving left joy stick up then down to pair the controller. After doing the calibrating by rotating I then simultaneously moved both right and left sticks down to the left bottom corner of controller to calibrate gyro. Something I noticed you hadn't done. Something else I found out is after pushing return to home, if the drone is below 65 feet it will elevate to 65 then return to home. How ever mine returned about 20 feet from take off area. Thanks for your review.
Good, honest review! I've gone through this review stuff with Holy stone several times, and my experience is always the same: fussy, sometimes they don't work, often very weak GPS stability, last one got stuck in a tree. They asked me to review the HS175D and I said no. I don't have the time to waste...just like you said.
Had this for a week. Been watching the videos, going to try my maiden flight today, wish me luck. I'm 72 and just trying to get in to this. If it doesn't go well what would you recommend for my next try? DJI? Mini? Thanks
I hope you are one of the ones that doesn't have any problems with it and it goes well. But yes, if you want stable high quality video and a much better experience all round, then one of the DJI models will work better. They are certainly more expensive, but well worth it if you want to get any watchable results out of it
I had a basic holy stone years ago and it was terrific. However, all businesses must be judged when things go wrong, in your case you reveal Holy Stones major communications problem. I was considering this item now I am not interested.
That sucks and its good that we have honest reviewer's like you so newcomers don't get screwed, even a diy Ardupilot quad is easier to get flying than that lol, both my 450's flew stable on their first takeoff and then ran auto tune while I sat watching with a coffee in my hand ha ha.
I've just started getting into drones I had the HS 175 I've flown at one time and the controls stopped working in mid-flight crashing it and bending the bar that holds the prop on. I bought it off of eBay so it didn't have a warranty, so now that drone is just sitting gathering dust because I don't have the skills or the know-how to change the motor out. So my wife bought me a HS 175d and I'm having issues with it connecting to the internet and I'll tried every trick that I can find online to correct this problem it still won't sync up. It's been about 4 months since I've had it hoping that holy Stone and the warranty that I got with it will refund my money or replace it with a better drone for beginner.
I appreciate that you are willing and able to call a turd a turd. It's a pity that you had to invest your time in this project, but at least you are telling the world or your experiences. I do wonder how crap like this gets made in the first place and how a company can survive producing more than one crap product. If they keep this up they are certainly not long for the world. :(
I wholeheartedly agree!
I've only had one serious issue with a Holy Stone drone -- the radio went to pot on my HS161 and I never did receive any replies from CS. 😞
I don't know just got this and was so far only had a chance to fly it indoors with out hitting anything couldn't get gps in house .
Maybe he got a lemon
He got three lemons. What's the payoff for that?
I finally got a chance to fly it out doors but was a windy day only issue I had was gps cut out a few times and in wind it got pushed around a little to much for my comfort no crash still going to go with the better version of this sending it back but honestly that may not be a issue depending on where you live the terrian and stuff.
I just know the better version locks on better to the GPS sats and it's only like 50 bucks more .
I found the camera to take great pictures and video if u go slow I will say .
Do not buy,it just flies away, manufacturer does not respond to emails.
Eh, that sucks. I got mine today and took a bit to get it going. It seems to works pretty well for the price. Be nice if it was gimbled and also a little miss leading on battery life since it referring to both batteries for the 46min. It does seem pretty durable so far since me and my son crashed it a few times trying it out. In a few weeks of use Ill know if I'm truly happy with the buy.
Soooo how's it so far
I would open the transmitter up and check the antenna, its probably pinched or mis-routed, the receiver antenna may be an issue too, I never trusted HS or EXO, more fun to build one anyway, keep up the excellent work!
Mines arrived today but too windy to fly but i did have some problems with the controller which looks like how i had my phone set up, if the wifi on the phone is set to auto connect it seems to cause problems, turning that of and manually connecting to the drone seemed to sort it. I could tell if it was going to fail as soon as you start the app if there is no firmware displayed on the top right of screen then controller had no control.
Holystone have since been in touch (after watching this video) and have sent another one - it seemingly suffered from the same problem, but today I stumbled onto the issue that having my phone in the holder of the radio with screw up the radios signal. Fly with just the radio - fine. Fly the the phone connected and 4ft away from you, also fine. Put the phone in the radios holder and within 2 minutes the signal is lost and it's RTHing. I'll be following up with Holystone some more to see if we can work out the precise problem and how to resolve it.
@@CurryKitten Was it ever resolved?
Sadly not - I made a follow up video showing everything I tried here czcams.com/video/V1fLBDLM7LI/video.html Essentially my belief is that the combination of that radio and my iPhone XR was an issue, the phone was obviously messing with the RF in close proximity. Move the phone a few feet away and it's ok - I tried to get HolyStone to accept this and they just insisted it was a bad controller. That said, there was quite an issue with it holding it's GPS lock as well. It's not the case of all HolyStones drones, just this one (at least it seems so to me) I looked at their HS700E after this and that performed well (it was just a bit on the pricey side). The only way I got the 175D flying is to rip out it's insides and replace them with what you'd have in a race-style quad (see czcams.com/video/2TIrIxv51q8/video.html for more details)
I bought this drone still can't get it to connect to WiFi cuz my phone is 4 g. They sent me an YT video on instructions for flying. Nothing about fixing the 4 g issue. Apparently you need 5g device. They could let you know this b4 hand. Pissed.
I expect it needs 5.8Ghz wifi rather than 4G/5G. You could fly it with just the controller (without FPV) as the video is certainly nothing to get excited about
Happy new year !
Great content I had enjoyed on your channel last year and hope to see more of the quality and unique content you usually do.
thanks a lot
hi guys could anyone recommend a good budget drone that works reasonable well.
I had one and it's a pain in the but it's no gud 😕 😔
think i will save for the new dji 3 mini
Thought it was Returning To Home in China for a minute on that second flight 😂
I got one of these today and so far, its performed brilliantly 👏. I'm guessing you got a damaged drone.
Loads of positive videos for this drone on utube
I got a replacement, and then another controller as well - see the follow up video to see how that went. I'm super happy yours is going well though
Put antenna up on back
It's just a plastic shell, there's no antenna actually in there. Open up the radio and you'll see
@@CurryKitten really? lol That's actually hilarious
I found out my android phone must be a very current model and very current operating system otherwise the drone will not unlock. My android phone is fairly old and would not permit the drone to unlock. I changed to a new android phone and all worked ok. Good luck
Best review I've seen of a Holystone product.
That looks like the garden waste. Best go for the black bin or recycling 😜
It's easy to spot comments from the UK as we'll always talk about which bin things can go in ;-)
@@CurryKitten with a two-weekly collection here in N Somerset you’ve got to get these things right!
Where are you based? Hoping to get to one of the FPV wing races this year if it’s reasonably close.
Enjoyed this review as with all your others, very honest and informative as always 👍
🙂
I actually have had a great luck
No problem with the one i bought
i think u got a faulty remote
Watch the follow up videos, I had 3 remotes in all, all suffered the same issues
Send it back for a replacement, obviously it has a malfunction but don't recommend not buying one.
I did mention that I can't send it back as it was offered as a review quad direct from Holy Stone. I contacted Holy Stone 3 times over a 2 week period about it explaining the issues and sending them video of to demonstrate the problems. Despite me having a "direct line" to someone at Holy Stone, I didn't get a response. That lack of response leads me to say this company is best avoided.
It does not make sense to buy these drone for someone new in the hobby.
They should get a used DJI mini or spark for a bit more and check it at purchase by letting the owner fly it .
Far best choice in the below 200€ segment.
And if you do not like such dji mini or spark or what ever then it is the best chance to get you money back, at least 90% or so.
Unrelated but can you review radiomaster T8 Lite?
If radiomaster want to send me one, then I'd be happy to
I think you just got a bad one. I own 2 175D and love them. Great fun to fly and long flight times. The camera is decent but if I want to record video or take pictures I fly my HolyStone 360. I have 4 HolyStone drones and haven't had any issues.
What type of phone are you using with it out of interest. If you watch the follow up video on this, I think I've pinned it down to phone proximity to the radio
well, I love my HS175D and it works fine. it's you, not the drone.
Glad you are having a decent experience. Watch the follow up videos before judging
I laughed so hard at your commits that I pissed my pants. Excellent!
I am not sure what it is you did wrong, but I’ve had this drawn for a while, and it is an absolute joy to fly and wonderful and flawless… I strongly disagree with your video… Have a nice day
Have a watch of the follow up videos I made. I engaged with the manufactorer, and confirmed that I wasn't doing anything wrong, but made some discoveries about having my phone in the holder vs moving it further away. I'm glad you had a decent experience with yours, but reading the comments of people who had them - if would either go great - like yours, or awful like mine. No middle ground, and no real indication as to why people had just vastly different expereinces
4:04 LOl, I too was concerned that the blades don't stop quickly enough and while flying it in circle mode it suddenly became uncontrollable and that had me concerned. Very good and honest review. I found it takes good video but there is a small risk if you buy it. However I think the HS 440 (less than 100 dollars) is just as good and maybe even better.
Thinking of getting an HS 440. I saw the problems with the 175&d, I would want the GPS not to fly outta range. However this seems like this can either go good or bad, and the 440 is cheaper. And if I get the 175, less likely-hood of it getting lost mid flight. So kind of confused :( and HS drone wise is all I can afford rn due to job circumstances.
Feel sorry for the people who get this for Christmas!!! £190!!!!! Seems a tad expensive for what it is, then again RTH works very well!
RTH works amazingly, as does a previous unknown mode called RTB (return to bush)
This is one of the best droneI have ever owned
There's no middle ground with this one. It's either people like yourself who had a great experience with it or people getting similar results as I did.
Had one of these , it did fly but it is pot luck to pair it . Had to have several goes . After 10 flights it just fell out the sky one of the motors had failed , replacement motors non existent. Get yourself something else and don't waste your money !!!!!!!
