Compare the interpretations of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra to the ones of Orchestra Mozart under the direction of Claudio Abbado. Which do you like better?

I love the baroque instruments in this recording (oboe and violin), but I like much more the Andante played by Orchestra Mozart. In this recording they make too many breaks in the Andante, nearly after each 1/4 note.

I like the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra best, because the sound of the Period-Correct F Trumpet. I feel this gives it a depth to the sound that the Orchestra Mozart recording, though Reinhardt plays a modern instrument with outstanding projection, lacks.

      Albert Fuller, Artistic Director
Musicians Jaap Schroder, Stanley Ritchie violin
Fortunato Arico and John Hsu, cello and viola da gamba
      Friedemann Immer trumpet
      Bernard Krainis, recorder
      Michel Piguet Oboe and
      John Solum transverse flute
Also 8 Sonatas and solos harpsichord, but was recorder in 1977 on original instruments in Great Barringotn Mas at the Aston Magna Summer Festival
And just one offering of the museums attempt to open up the historic offerings and current talent I suppose maybe other museums will do the same for the public, and for the players the musicians themselves.
I cannot be more excited when I bought the offerings and every part from the vinyl tpo the descriptions of the programs and the selections, but I did find some prinitng errors on vinyl and in the program, but most won't see the errors, I once after high school operated a copier at the time, a mimeograph machine with green stenciled typed studies and a team of 6 proofreaders and ladies who'd been at a long time former teachers of English Literature and ect, who hated me as I'd find mistakes they missed, and boy they'd get mad at me, and all I could say was I just read it over before stretching the stencil over the ink barrel, cuz it'd be a shame to have to start stencil to finished report and the studies have glaring mistakes, I was just looking after all of you, and they'd buy it, I really didn't want to have to increase my own workload and repeat the job, some of these reports seemed to go on foreverfrom hal inch thick to a full inch thick, and one tiny mistake and well you know, straw broke the camels' back is that it?
      I like Freiburger's and no, I don't dislike Claudio A' stuff.

That trumpeter is awesome! The valveless trumpet (note: it is not a "natural" trumpet-the latter can only play the harmonic progression, whereas the instrument he is playing has finger holes to allow some alteration to the natural progression) is without a doubt one of the most devilishly difficult instruments to play well. That this man can so accurately play Bach speaks volumes about his ability and relentless pursuit of perfection.
By the way, the rest of the orchestra ain't shabby. Really enjoyed this performance.

This dude's instrument is way shorter and pitched higher - therefore his bear was much more powerful than mine. This guy is an absolute monster! And just look at that embouchure! He plays like it's the easiest thing on earth

    • @rescue270
      @rescue270 Před 2 lety

I think it is still considered a natural trumpet in F. The finger holes are tiny vents that permit the natural tones to be played more in tune. The unvented natural trumpet's tones would never be exactly in tune and the vents are an attempt at making minor corrections to natural tuning discrepancies.

That's not merely a "trumpet", it's a valveless natural trumpet, also called a "Baroque trumpet". Has a very characteristic sound for Baroque music, but it predates the valved horn, and thus is EXTREMELY difficult to play fast. The embouchure alone takes years to master, which is why the horn player here is the only guy sitting as still as a rock. He needs to concentrate and avoid moving his head and messing up his embouchure.

    • @tillm2481

fiddlinmacx to perform this music they have to „dance“ - it‘s part of playing baroque music of this kind correctly - it‘s dance music of that time..the dancing stresses the dynamics, but the trumpet player has to look on his breath.with dancing he would have no chance to play it perfectly, to hit the notes - the group is a total rolemodel how to play that music

However, the lady who.taught that class was/is a world class harpsichordist and an excellent teacher)! Needless to say, we learned from the get-go that authentic Baroque music ensembles perform on period instruments (instruments that were used at the time the piece was composed and that the tuning is about 40 cents lower (A 400-he tuning used at the time JS Bach was alive)than the standard tuning of today at A 440

I will forever love the build the entire piece to the counterpoint magic that is 1:36 (I am addicted to major 7's being used this way), also just now noticing the cool counterpoint that takes place in 1:52 as the scales in both directions have beautiful clashes (and the interesting presence of a b natural immediately after a bflat [taking place also in the earlier passage with B Flat Major 7 to e minor 7 (with a natural 5th)]), try the notes of the scales together yourself slowly (sure the perfect fifth of c and g is a bit odd but the rest has quite special stuff). This is an example of one reason I love music from this period so much.
I've loved this recording for a long time.

what is difficult is to make them clean for Bach music
there are two very different sounds researched by trumpet player in uppon register, depending on if you are a band player or a classical player
it isn't necessary harder or simpler, but it's a different work. I don't think that Friedemann Immer can play american stuff very loud, he could play the notes with his sound.

I don’t think people understand how hard the trumpet part in this is. Professional players used to negotiate in their contracts that they’d never have to play this piece. And that’s with our modern trumpets. The soloist in this not only kills the Brandenburg, he plays it on baroque trumpet, which is many times more difficult than our modern trumpets. Bravo!

  • @meccastreisand2722
    @meccastreisand2722 Před 2 lety

    Douglas Adams said it perfectly:
Whatever new extremities of discovery or understanding we reach, we always seem to find the footsteps of Bach there already. When we see images of the strange mathematical beasts lurking at the heart of the natural world-fractal landscapes, the infinitely unfolding paisley whorls of the Mandelbrot Set, the Fibonacci series, which describes the pattern of leaves growing on the stem of a plant, the Strange Attractors that beat at the heart of chaos- it is always the dizzying, complex spirals of Bach that come to mind.
Some people say that the mathematical complexity of Bach renders it unemotional. I think the opposite is true. As I listen to the interplay of parts in a piece of Bach polyphony, each individual strand of music gathers hold of a different feeling in my mind, and takes them on simultaneous interweaving rollercoasters of emotion. One part may be quietly singing to
itself, another on an exhilarating rampage, another is sobbing in the corner, another dancing. Arguments break out, laughter, rage. Peace is restored. The parts can be utterly different, yet all belong indivisibly together. It’s as emotionally complex as a family.
And now, as we discover that each individual mind is a family of different parts, all working separately but together to create the fleeting shimmers we call consciousness, it seems that once again, Bach was there before us.
When you listen to the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, you don’t need a musicologist to tell you that something new and different is happening. Even two and three quarter centuries after it actually was new, you can hear the unmistakable thrumming energy of a master at the height of his powers doing something wild and daring with absolute self-confidence. When Bach wrote it, he put himself at the harpsichord instead of the viola he more usually played in ensembles. It was a happy, productive time of his life when he was at last surrounded by some good musicians. The harpsichord traditionally played a supporting role in this kind of group, but not this time. Bach let rip.
As you listen to the first movement, you hear something strange, new, and terrifying giving birth to itself. Or maybe it’s a giant engine, or even a great horse being prepared for a Herculean task, surrounded by (you can’t help jumbling metaphors when language tries to keep up with music) a flotilla of helpers fussing around it. You hear it ticking over, trotting having a little canter here and there, getting a bit frisky, and then taking a trial run as its helpers encourage it onward, keening with bated breath. It hauls itself back in again, does another quick circuit. . . and then the other instruments fall silent. It stands free and alone, pawing at the ground, breathing deeply, gathering its strength, trotting forward . . .
And then it makes its move-running . . . hurtling. . .flying . . .climbing. . . clambering. . . pushing. . . panting. . . twisting. . . trashing . . .pounding at the ground . . . pounding . . . pounding . . . suddenly breaking away, running onward desperately, and then, with one last little unexpected step up in the bass, it’s home and free-the main tune charges in triumphantly and it’s all over bar the weeping and dancing (i.e., the second and third movements).
The familiarity of the Brandenburgs should not blind us to their magnitude. I’m convinced that Bach is the greater genius who ever walked among us, and the Brandenburgs are what he wrote when he was happy.

J.D. Berends Nevertheless, it is a modern reproduction of a natural trumpet which will have small holes drilled for tuning purposes. This is done because intonation is more important than historical accuracy. There is a recording where soprano saxophone is used instead of trumpet because the trumpeter couldn't stay in tune with the ensemble. The tuning issues with a true natural trumpet make it undesirable for recordings.
