How to make power with your BMW N54

- So the N54 is a great engine for tuning, some people even refer to it as the German 2jz. Why is it so good? Well the n54 was bmw’s first experience with turbos, so they made sure the engine was strong enough to handle the boost. What does that mean? Well the N54 has a forged bottom end from factory, which means you can slap on a big turbo and make some serious numbers with out hurting the motor. But there are multiple ways of building this engine. And today we will discuss a few. Now hopefully at the end you will know exactly which path you would like to follow.

@@slitherdurant I’ve had them in my car for a little over 3 years. Probably only about 20k miles, though. Zero issues so far.

@@slitherdurant I didn’t. They were already balanced and bench tested, according to the paper that came with them.

would like to note it is completely possible to do small runs on a stock car with the stage 2+ tune, there is an option to check for running stock downpipes
That would be stage 1. Stage 2 is upgraded intake and downpipes, stage 2+ is intake, downpipes and intercooler.
You have no idea on what you're talking about. Put your money where your mouth is, buy either a N54 or N55, keep EVERYTHING stock, and tune with MHD with the stage 2+ and see what happens. You WILL destroy the plastic charge pipe, you WILL destroy the stock intercooler etc. Ask me how I know. And NO, doing "short runs" doesnt mean anything, or causes less stress on stock parts

-Still on stock turbos but will be upgrading to 17T soon
-full prev maintenance including all gaskets, full transmission service, water pump, injector service, etc.

@@5M_Adif 0hp at the moment since MY FUCKING WATER PUMP HAS STOPPED WORKING. But it's pushing around 400ish normally. Never dyno'd but that's ,my estimate.
@@5M_Adif I'll be doing 17T turbos, port injection, upgraded oil cooler and maybe a set of coilovers next. Aiming for around 550 at the wheels when it's all said and done.
Are y’all running turbos on the stock auto trans ???? Or upgrading the transmission
so far I've got 17t Turbos,1st Racing Upgraded Inlets(didnt do outlets while i was there),VRSF 7.5inch stepped FMIC,VRSF DCIs,VRSF Street Exhaust,Index 10s on bank 1 and Index 12s in bank 2(I have the other set of 12s just need to get them serviced), ETS Chargepipe,HKS BoV, n55 oem sparkplugs(one step colder from factory), High Performance Coil Packs and an xhp stage 2 transmission tune with an MHD stage 1 tune.
And before yall get on my case, no the Upgraded twins on the OTS tune had not been causing me issues. I'm going the custom tune route once I get a 3.5 bar map and a stage 2 racworks fuel pump. As well as some maintenance items(maintenance before mods, especially on the N54)
Yea I was going to say i heard MHD doesn’t account for upgraded inlets our outlets, you would need a custom tune for those but Forsure get more power from it

I got the upgraded stage 2 fuel bump and the 3.5 bar map and said fck it. Went with v5 e40 stage 2+ and the cars holding it surprisingly well.
I have big missfiring issues if I use Anny tune on mhd annyone else Here has the same issue ?

i'm running 580hp on stock 6mt, just 550i clutch
Vargas turbos are junk. The fuel issue over 500whp isn't the injectors, it's the hpfp. I make a solid 470whp right now with just fbo stock turbos. Will be installing new turbos soon. And a new clutch with a smfw. Planning for 25psi on e70.

I think everyone wanting a big single as their end goal is silly, especially with these new turbos coming out and being so damn cheap, (17t and 19t)

@@Battlemaul123 If you're trying to get big power at the top end of the rev range and want to go fast in a quarter mile the single turbo isn't a bad way to get there. It's definitely not as fun or accessible to drive in a tight track, drift or as a daily driven pocket rocket on single as it is with the china upgraded twin turbski setup.
Take the money you save by keeping it twin turbo and put that into an LSD (adequate units are available for less than $800 and will hold the increased torque all day every day.
@@funfun5656 if you're going cheap route with a lsd, i suggest a ford 8.8 lsd swap. it is affordable and takes a little diy'ing
