  • The E90 chassis with the N54 engine has become every BMW enthusiasts favorite car to build. With the potential to make great power numbers with simple bolt-ons, the 335i can quickly become a beast on the streets. Cristian from Vehicle Virals fell in love with this chassis and wanted to take things to the next level. After having us perform our full engine out service, refreshing the entire motor, his N54 was ready for the Doc race single turbo power!

    • @topfueljunkie100
      @topfueljunkie100 Před rokem +2

      Someone forgot to tell that to my car because it was bone stock save for aftermarket suspension and it's been expensive to maintain from 104,000 miles till the current 135,000 miles. Cost me over $20k in repairs and I've been been on top of all maintenence since I got it at 39k miles. Was relatively problem free till I hit that 104,000 mile mark then it all changed.
      That's the caveat that needs to be added but is often forgotten when making statements like yours. It all depends on age.
      Those stock components are engineered to only last that long then it all goes south.
      I can't wait to get rid of mine. Modifying it which was my dream all along has been soured by this experience of it turning into a money pit.
      At this point, it'd make me happier to make a video of it flying off a cliff engulfed in flames watching it plunge to a violent end than it would to keep it as a project car. Seriously, F&#@! THIS CAR!

      @topfueljunkie100 uh, what is going wrong with it? Cause my car is fbo and at 136k miles and has been fbo since 80k miles. I never had a random 20k maintenance requirement come up. It's literally no different than maintaining any other car.....I'm curious what's actually going bad that you're saying this? Everything that can go wrong is very predictable. I know someone whose single turbo making 550whp on a 200k mile stock long block

    • @topfueljunkie100
      @topfueljunkie100 Před rokem +2

      @@anthonyfpvminiquad1728 Well it wasn't $20,000 all at once, it was spread out over the course of those 30,000 miles after I hit the 104,000 mile marker.
      Off the top of my head, and I know there's more than this :
      Front drive shaft had to be replaced (broken u-joint on the 335xi AWD model)
      The engine computer completely died, it had to be replaced
      DSL module for the infotainment center died and had to be replaced
      Entire stock suspension had to be replaced
      Front thrust arm had to be replaced
      Water pump and associated components had to be replaced multiple times
      Most of the gaskets were leaking and had to be replaced (head gasket, oil pan gasket, etc)
      Engine mounts had to be replaced
      Both front axles had to be replaced
      The oil level sensor and cam exhaust sensors needed to be replaced
      Chargepipe and coolant expansion tank both cracked and needed replacement
      Radiator cracked and needed to be replaced
      Then there's all the regular maintenance on this car which exceeds the cost and frequency of normal cars in my experience after owning 9+ vehicles :
      Battery replacement and coding multiple times
      Brake rotors, pads, fluid, and wear sensors replaced mutiple times
      Walnut shell blasting multiple times
      Oil/filter changes multiple times
      Hood struts and trunk struts went bad and needed replacement
      Ignition coils and plugs replaced multiple times
      Vaccum lines getting old/leaking needed to be replaced
      Diff fluid, trans fluid, transfer case fluid flushes and replacement
      Serpentine belt and all associated components needed to be replaced (and crank seal guard had to be added because of a dangerous flaw in the design allowing a shredded belt to destroy your entire engine when the belt gets sucked in passed the front crank seal)
      And now, even after all that, my turbos need to be replaced as they're not holding boost. That's going to be another $3k to $6k+ depending on what you do.
      Then, add in the fact that the suspension I put on is bottoming out because BMW didn't design it with enough suspension travel up front (even in stock form) means I have to go back and re-do the front or live with that nonsense....
      The fact that injectors are now like $3k for a set (and you will have to be replacing them if you tune your car, there's a well-known history of leaking injectors).....
      The ever-present mystery mis-fires....
      Random HPFP failures....
      Random water pump failures.....
      and on and on the list goes, all that makes it obvious that it's too needy and expensive of a car, and one which never runs well long when tuned (queue the popular meme of the N54 check engine light always being on), and you come to the obvious conclusion that there's better and more reliable platforms out there than this one. The juice isn't worth the squeeze and the constant problems really put a damper on the fun you can have.
      I can take you to basically any E90/E92/E93/N54 forum and pull up post after post of people complaining about most of these issues and the never-ending saga of problems and maintenence. They do have fun when modded and tuned with better turbos, not denying that, but it's easy to surpass the threshold and make it unhappy and give yourself more problems.
      That's the experience of both myself and multiple friends of mine who also own a 335i which they've modded (mine's always been stock save for upgrading non-power related items like LCI taillights, BMW performance exhaust, suspension braces for better handling, SS brake lines, BOV/chargepipe/intake - I was getting prepped for going FBO but never did it as the car was always having some sort of issue).
      Then there were multiple of these issues I laid out above which were not solved in one trip to the mechanic either. There were several times where the car had to go back to the mechanic three times just to get the one single issue resolved. That is still ongoing today so I just live with the problems for now.
      So those kind of events really sour the experience for me too and obviously make it even more costly then any other car I've ever owned or seen (obvious exception for higher performance sports cars like GTRs, Porsches, etc which you'd expect)
      So given all this, I can confidently say it IS very different than most other cars and not at all the same in frequency or expense when it comes to issues experienced! It's been far less reliable and far more expensive.

    • @funfun5656
      @funfun5656 Před 2 lety

      Lol I think they're spinning the tires on purpose. You need to intentionally hold the DTC button for ~5 sec to disengage traction control and then burry the throttle in 1st...granted with this setup Christian can probably manage to do a burnout starting from 4th.
      Anyways I definitely don't hate having X-drive for winter driving but with this much power it's bound to be just another point of failure with added complexity.

    • @topfueljunkie100
      @topfueljunkie100 Před rokem

      @@funfun5656 Exactly right! Add in the goofy stance it has on stock suspension (can you say wheel gap?) and I've found it's not a good platform for modding unless you stay conservative. Should have gotten the RWD version for a project car but then you're back to traction problems depending on your power levels. The AWD platform sadly doesn't have the necessary support needed to make it a viable project car if you have goals of 500+whp.

    • @funfun5656
      @funfun5656 Před rokem

      @@topfueljunkie100 the gap is an easy fix considering any 15 year old car is probably going to need a set of coilovers regardless of one's plans for it...will perform better than stock suspension at a fraction of the price even on the low end.
      The issue really comes down to the clearance issues in the Xdrive with very little upside to compensate for the added trouble of working on one vs a RWD with a a junkyard ford dif and wider rear tires.
      The 535xi wagon on the other hand is a vehicle that often tempts me.

    • @topfueljunkie100
      @topfueljunkie100 Před rokem

      @@funfun5656 I agree. It's so much more of a pain to work on the AWD vs a RWD model! My turbos need to be replaced and I'm not looking forward to that job at all! So much so that I've been living with turbos that don't always give me all the boost the DME demands and I just live with a slow car because of it. I've dealt with this for the past couple years actually.
      Stock turbos yet. Wastegate aren't sealing so it bleeds off boost pressure under load. That's the best guess I have so far. There's definitely wastegate rattle. It's weird, only does it when the temps outside warm up, seems to disappear in the colder months and I have most of my boost all the time as best as I can tell.
      I did replace my worn out stock suspension with Bilstein B8 shocks and struts and some H&R lowering springs but the trouble I now have is that I'm often times bottoming out my suspension on even medium bumps in the road. I actually hate it a lot.
      The suspension itself is great and I love the better handling and can easily tolerate the increase in harshness (not really that bad) vs stock, but that horrible loud banging like I'm breaking my car whenever I go over a larger bump in the road has really made me hate driving it anymore.
      I actually want to get rid of it because if I get rid of the lowering springs, it looks stupid in my eyes with that negative rake it has (larger wheel gap in front than in the rear) and if I keep them, I get the aforementioned bottoming out issues, at least that's what I believe is happening.
      I haven't bothered to buy actual coilovers as I hate the idea of removing a perfectly good suspension set up I only put on 15-20k miles ago. Even if I found the perfect suspension that fixed my issue, I'd still have all the other problems that come with the x-drive model and then I'd still have all the other problems of owning an N54 powered car, lol.
      I'm basically stuck and completely unsure of what to do. Don't want to get a newer car as prices and interest rates are insane. Don't want to get a RWD 335i due to all the unreliability of the N54 platform. So I'm kind of stuck and fear this is killing the car hobby for me. No way out. Dump the car and get a cheap, unexciting beater. That's depressing!
