Jerusalem-based journalist and author Nathan Thrall has been awarded the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for his book, _A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy_. It tells the story of Israel's occupation of the West Bank through one Palestinian father's quest to seek answers and accountability after his 5-year-old son is involved in a deadly accident. We speak to Thrall about President Biden saying for the first time that he would not supply certain weapons to Israel to be used in an all-out invasion of Rafah. "It is too little, too late," Thrall says. "It is a step in the right direction, but the administration has said that it has not made a final determination even about these paused weapons." Thrall also discusses Israel's ceasefire talks with Hamas, anti-Netanyahu protests led by families of Israeli hostages, Israel's intensified crackdown in the West Bank, how criticism of Israel is conflated with antisemitism, and why debates over the future of a Palestinian state are an "enormous distraction from the reality on the ground" - that is, the Israeli occupation’s "system of domination that is extremely bureaucratic and elaborate, [that] has lasted for over half a century and [is] not going anywhere."

After seeing Nathan's appearance on Adam Conover's podcast Factually, I felt compelled to read his book. I finished it about a month ago, and it truly surpassed my expectations. He weaves the life stories of numerous people involved in a single tragic event, providing cultural and historical context to who the characters are, what their life is like, and how apartheid impacts them. Maps are interspersed in the pages that help visualize the distances and proximity involved. The story itself is one that is so deeply human and transcends every difference we have with people we see as others. I don't think the book is without flaw, but I see that is purely a factor of the amount Nathan has to grow as a writer. In terms of the subject and overall presentation, it is worth the read.

Prior to the 1917 “Balfour Declaration" of the British government's intent to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine, the British govt had announced plans set up a Zionist state in their _Kenya_ colony. 3.5 million acres of the finest Kenyan land were demarcated for this purpose.
The plan fell apart due to different reasons, including the fact that some of the colonizers already settled in Kenya were straight up antisemitic and opposed the idea of giving prime Kenyan land (that they themselves had their eyes on) to the Jews, proposing that the Israeli state be set up in Palestine.
Kenyans would be experiencing exactly what Palestinians are going through today, if history had played out just a bit differently. Indeed, freedom fighters in Kenya (including participants in the _Mau Mau_ liberation movement that was agitating for the return of Kenyan land appropriated by colonial settlers) were branded terrorists and their movements outlawed by colonial-era legislation, until 20 years ago, when the legislation was scrapped.
