One of the problems with early success as an author is that there's no incentive to get better at the craft. If your poorly written book can make money, there's no need to get better to widen the audience. Otherwise, we'd have seen those improvements in a lot of authors. 🤷‍♀

S E Hinton published The Outsiders at 18 and managed to create an original, heartfelt book with characters that felt real and raw. It’s not a matter of age, it’s about talent and research. I’m tired of people saying “she was only 18 when she wrote it and she wrote it for herself; she didn’t think anyone would read it.” First off, I have a fully grown frontal lobe, so I know that that’s not true. You learn not to copyright at like 12 years old (at least in the States). She knows she copy and pasted exact scenes and characters, which is why she gave the disclaimer beforehand that “it’s a combination of the Hunger Games and Red Queen.” If she didn’t make that disclaimer, she’d be in a PR nightmare. And if she really “wrote it for herself” she wouldn’t have marketed it so heavily on TikTok, so that’s a piss poor excuse. People have developed a parasocial relationship with Lauren Roberts and can’t see beyond her bubbly Internet personality. It’s clouding their judgment to a severely mediocre and horribly unoriginal book that does a disservice to the YA fantasy genre.

      R. F. Kuang wrote The Poppy War when she was 18-19, if I'm not mistaken, and it is a complex, military-political fantasy based on real historical events. I understand that not all people are geniuses, but justifying mediocrity and plagiarism by the age of a person (who is, in fact, already an adult!) is stupid.

That stuck with me too…like she killed one strong guy and now yall are sending her off to her death? It would make sense if the author wrote that portion as the people in the slums would try to send the strongest of their citizens to fight in the trials to gain a sort of “foothold “ in society to show they aren’t completely weak….but to just throw a random person in there and they’re all cheering when they know it isn’t exactly an honor ? And even then, it never made sense how winning the trials was an honor for anyone. You’re just fighting a // few // other people, it’s not like they’re fighting against each type of power and seeing which one is the strongest of them all..

There was nothing interesting about any of the characters and certainly there wasn’t any way to actually redeem the stuff the prince had done. Sorry im at 22:09 rn and i have so many questions i have to pause because? Maybe these get answered later on but:
    1) only the people who have powers are inside the city and everyone else is outside, then who does all the labor for the nobility? Do they allow some non powered people inside to cook/clean etc etc? And if so, why would the elites want to spread a rumor that they carry a disease? Like thats their main source of labor did no one think of this? Also they themselves literally got their powers from a plague and its only been 30 years like no one has forgotten this
    2) Why would anyone assume a plague cause multiple generations of people to have superpowers? I feel like most powered people would be in the situation where the parents have powers and their children dont? If this was something they were infected with? I feel like youd have some people purposely seek out their plague to infect people too
    3) Why would strength powers be favored over mind powers in any monarchy system when knights were more expected to actually showcase their strength in ways it would be rarer for nobility to do. Like why would none strength powers be considered “boring” when they have utility to these upper elites
    4) how would the main chatacter live in the main city and not know what the prince looks like? Is she supposed to be a good thief?? Because why would she not no that
    5) wait if her dad is a healer then why is she a thief??? Like i understand that her family isnt nobility but her dad has powers, that would still place her in a better position that most? Is the city just That Bad?

this book was soooo hard to get into. ofc i was skeptical with reading it but i want to understand the hype around it. the writing was mediocre, the dialogue was cringy oh myy the forced sexual tension between paedyn and kai was so bad i cannot read it without cringing. the pacing was soooo slooooowww i was 25 chapters in and nothing interesting was happening because every bit was predictable. the characters are forgettable and bland, the only thing interesting about the paedyn is she has silver hair??? but everything else abt her was unoriginal. she's from the slums, a thief, and part of a rebellion? oh, thats somewhat familiar. plus there were scenes that was literally copied and pasted from the hunger games, especially the interview stuff before the ball and the trials. anw this book was not it and i def dnfed it

Actually what I got out of this is that I can generate a better story with chatgpt. Hitting up Sophie once I’ve edited and adapted the entire chatgpt conversation into a book

I’m gonna be so real I’ve got nothing to say this time but I’m glad the Young Elites were mentioned. I read it when I was like 15 and I liked it and felt that a lot of future series ripped it off but I think that’s just cuz they’re all the same. Being left affected after an illness tho or getting powers that way is totally a rip of it.

I actually enjoyed this but full disclaimer, I read this at the same time i was reading haunting adeline and going on a trip. This was very tropey and predictable, but I still enjoyed it. That being said, I'm hella worried for the sequels.

You know you’ve made it as an author when influencers make fun ranting videos like this about you. Also, is it wrong that your review kind of made me want to read Powerless more???😅

I get that people like to read simpler things rather than more complex writings, but i think there’s definitely a line 😭one dimensional copies with just the same recycled tropes gets annoying after a point.
